Which recording?Out of the three major recordings of INTO THE WOODS...which one do you think is the best? I own all three versions and depending on my mood...depends on which version I listen to. But if I had to choose one...I would say it would have to be the Original Broadway Cast Recording with Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, and Chip Zien)! There is something unique about that one! Next...I would have to say the Original London Cast Recording with Julia McKenzie, Imelda Staunton, and Ian Bartolomew! Followed by the New Broadway Cast Recording with Vanessa Williams, Kerry O'Malley, and Stephen DeRosa!

I have all of them - I listen to all of them sometimes, but I'm not a big fan of the London cast. I like the others about the same.

As most people will tell you, the original broadway recording is the best.

OBC! The revial is ok, but has nothing on the orginal and though I love british accents, the Witch drives me insane so much I can't stand her!

I have the Revival, and I enjoy it, but I think that you really need a mix of the three for the best. For example, Bernadette Peters' version of "Last Midnight" is much better than the others, but I like the Revival version of "No One is Alone" better. Ultimately, it's all about personal preference. Buy OBC first and then Revival. (I wouldn't waste money on London, but whatever floats your boat. )
Enjoy!

OBC. I haven't heard the London one, though.
And - just to get this out of my system - in the opening number in the Revival, I absolutely HATE HATE HATE it when that crappy sound comes on during the Witch's solo.
Hmmm, how can I spell this....
it's like DVV DVV DVV DVV DVV DVV and it sounds so techno, and it doesn't fit the score at all.
This probably made a limited amount of sense. And I realize that.
EDIT: for my little sfx spelling, those are two "v"s, not w's.

Initially I hated the London Cast... I dont think the singing is as strong or well controlled as it is in the OBC. but ultimately, i opened myself up to it, and i'm going to have to voice that I think the essence of a lot of the songs--the heart of what's meant to be told--seems to come through a lot more from the actors in the London Cast. Example: the polarity and the evidence of the struggle of the Baker's Wife makes her conclusion not only more recognizable, but more valuable--to both her and to the us. But it's just my opinion....

Oh but yeah I totally agree that the b.peters is about 3 to 10 thousand times better than the witch on the London... and you know, that character is KIND OF important...

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about musikal_geek! Gah! That annoys the heck out of me too. When I first heard it I'm like what the hell, I don't recall that in the DVD.
Of course, adding that with Vanessa Williams really made me dislike the song.

I listened to the revival a few nights ago and my opinion was that the actors played the roles rather modernized... if that makes any sense.
