What Is This Feeling?

Which gender is the BIGGER sex symbol?

Men or women? I was thinking about this recently. Even though many people think it is both ways, I think it strongly leads toward another. And orientation aside , which gender has the the bigger sex appeal?
Brock07

I'd say women, and not just because I'm your typical-straight-mind only on one thing-19-year old guy.

I think that women's sex appeal has always been used more, and more effectivly to better ends than a man's sex appeal. It's becoming more even today, but traditionally, I'd say it's the womans.
Salome

plus face it men's bodies arent very pretty naked like ours are.
Lepitot

I think woman have more sex appeal.

But, I disagree with Salome, I think the male body can be just as pretty as the woman's.
le_moofin

Women. We've got Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Madonna... the list could go on and on. Although I certainly find boys much more attractive, history/society/culture has shown us that the female body is more sensual than a male's, making it more sexually appealing.

Woman

it's due to the fact that men are more visually driven when it comes to sex; thus a sexy semi-nude woman will do a lot more for getting off a man and selling more tickets to a male audience than a sexy half-nude man would draw woman to see a movie or a show. Because I man could leave a show saying "wow that woman was really hott, great show!!" but a woman would leave a show saying "that guy was hott, but there really wasn't any substance or plot". It's all just a different thought process that is typical to the different geners.
PappyCat

Women, because society has overly sexualized them.
Quique

The females.

Cause this is still a male dominated world, and as long as that's the case, women will continue to be exploited.
Mungojerrie_rt

I think it's about the same, it's just done in different ways. Men are used as the daring and dashing heros, that are strong, brave and compassionate, as well as good looking. Women are just used for the looks. It's a shame, because a strong female character is much more appealing than a bimbo.

You haven't seen my body naked..... Wink
Salome

thank god Wink
Brock07

You're terrible
curlyhairedsoprano91

Women, certainly. Even in today's liberal media, you'll find very few reporters/news anchors that fall short of "stereotypically attractive." Women are valued for their brains, but only if those brains come in perfect bodies.
Salome

a smart attractive woman knows how to manipulate others with her body. Smile

Not smart, attractive women as a whole....just Dawn.

I'm too pretty to get punched in the stomach.

I disagree. This isn't a fat/thin thread or a "why are women expected to be attractive" thread. It's a "which gender is more valued for their bodies" thread. I haven't been here very long, but it's been almost half a year and I haven't seen any threads like this.
shakalakababy

i think he may have been referring to the dawn getting punched in the stomach discussion, which is indeed beating a dead horse

I love that graphic. I laugh everytime it gets posted.

see what you started brock! Twisted Evil
Brock07

Ok, I brought it up today, and I do every once in a blue moon, but I don't talk about it nonstop. There are others who seem to refrence it more often than I do.

Ok, back on topic. No more talk of that time that Tracy punched Dawn in the stomach and Dawn threw up.
wicked_boy

Salome, people here will never ever ever let you or the rest of us forget about that little "stomach" incident.

It's a classic MdN story. Wink
Salome

Maybe the mods can create a sticky for when people want to bring it up....that way it wont divert other thread..hmmmmmm
le_moofin

^ Heh.

FAQ #92: What's this about Salome/Dawn getting punched in the stomach?
    Well, it all started when...

And so on and so forth.
Brock07

Hahaha we should have a FAQ sticky!!!!!!!
Salome

go for it. it would save me explaining to newbies. lol
Joshua

Or it could just be put in the FAQs/Rules of the site.

And btw Dawn, it's n00b.
le_moofin

I remember when my friends and I called n00bs "noodles". Don't remember how we started that, exactly ^^;;

Shameless rant!

Dear Musicals.Net Posters,

I can't really answer the initial question, because I don't know which gender has been turned into the more popular, overall sex symbol.

Those who argue for EITHER gender can list literally HUNDREDS of deceased, and living, examples from both genders.

I'm certain that some people would argue that some transgendered people can be considered to be the most popular sex symbols.

I AM going to perform a shameless rant, though, because I don't understand why everybody perpetuates stereotypes, such as "Men are more strongly driven by visual stimuli!"

Oh, c'mon (or cum on)/ whichever you prefer...LOL! I know...that was immature, but it was fun, but, really, why do people have to perpetuate such stereotypes, when there are so many people, of all THREE genders (male, female, and trans) who are turned on by the sight of someone who turns them on?

I've also heard it said that women are more strongly turned on by audio-erotic stimuli. I must admit that I am turned on by accents, etc. Of course, I'm certain that there are tons of other people, male and female, and transgendered, who are totally turned on by various types of voices.

I can't stand generalizations, because they always make me feel as though I'm the world's greatest freak if I don't fit their hard-assed rules (Ie: I always keep thinking, Gee, if I don't think that, and MOST WOMEN in America think that, then am I not a 100% woman, or am I somehow not a woman at ALL? Am I the ONLY woman who doesn't fit the survey results?) I know that I shouldn't overreact, but such strict, rule-esque survey results, stereotypes, etc., disturb me to the max!

I don't know; maybe I'm really, really overreacting. I have my stereotypes, too, but I somehow don't like survey results. I mean, NOBODY in their right MIND would accept the words of someone who said "If you don't have tanned skin, blue eyes, and golden hair, by BIRTH, you're just NOT an American (or a European, or a Canadian, etc.), and yet, when someone says "99 out of 100 women are only turned on by audio stimuli!", either everyone dutifully believes that person, or I'm the only one who's silly enough to take the survey results seriously...

Oh, please tell me that you don't all eat those radio/ Cosmopolitan magazine/ etc. surveys up like a bag of jelly beans, and please tell me that not all women are maternal, more turned on by audio stimuli, guided ONLY by a perfect, unfailing feminine intuition, better survivors than men, etc! I can't deal with the pressure of HAVING to be better than men, at the cost of my own sanity!

I once listened a guy in one of my college classes, as he droned on, and on, and on, about how women were the most perfect creatures in the world. On the verge of a nervous breakdown, and about ready to sceam him right out of the room, I said "I can't live up to all of that!"

Thanks in advance for your replies.

^^ interesting, duchess.. very interesting.

again, i agree with most of the people that have posted on the board...
women are clearly objectified as the bigger "sex symbols"
yes, isnt it crazy how most, if not all weather girls on the news are attractive, young girls.

i agree completely with the poster who wrote how people value womens brains, if they're in a good body.

ah, well
Brock07

I love the Cosmo quizes and articles....I read them to see how accurate they are. And they aren't too far from the actual truth...

Those quizzes are nearly always lame. It's always one extreme, the other extreme, and the middle ground.

he certainly would. He knew a sex symbol when he saw one. his preference just didnt lean that way.
nycbound

^Absolutely! Actually, Cole Porter has created some incredibly sexy female characters!
Asha

Women, I think, are far more objectified sexually, and are, as a whole, used more to attract sexual attention in any way.

And we're beautiful, so..... : D
sopranoopianoo

Yes, I can agree that women can be overly sexualized in the media, etc. But, just as well men are becoming more and more seen as sex objects too. I see ads on television, newspapers, magazines, etc. all the time with men wearing nothing but pants or underwear just as much as I see ads with a woman's cleavage. I think it's really starting to become more equal.

I also don't think necessarily the body has EVERYTHING to do with being sexual. Sure, we see thin and attractive people all the time which can put ideas in our heads that THAT is what "sex appeal" is but in all reality seduction isn't purely physical at all. I've casually dated amazingly attractive-every-girl-flirts-with kinds of guys and I've casually dated very unattractive guys. Let me tell you, that the ones that haven't been models of Hercules were the ones that drew me in the most. It's as if the extremely attractive ones don't think they have to do anything to get a girl, as if they'll just 'flock' to them. (Now of course this isn't ALWAYS true...) But as of recent, the guy that I'm in like with isn't your next Colin Firth... but he is the most seductive man I've ever met. His personality, humor and way of carrying himself is so incredibly sexy. I don't have to be kissing abs of steel to be turned on...

But, as the advertising world has a hold on our brains... we subconsciously will focus on anything that's aesthetically pleasing. It's why certain colors and stand out fonts and slogans appeal to buyers. It's why turning on the news and seeing attractive people at the news desk will keep us watching. I know this, because my dad is a news anchor. He has to present a clean cut, attractive image... its in his contract. Yes, my dad is an attractive guy I get lots of crap about that (let's just say all of my girl friends swoon when theyre at my house, dear god... and people think im his wife when I'm out with him ugh) but what I can say about my dad in comparison to other attractive media employees is that he is passionate about his job and he is one of the hardest working people I've ever met in my life. Because of that it's easy to forget about his aesthetic image... when viewers watch him, they're captivated by the talent he has. Sadly thats not always the case.

But to fully answer in my own opinion the question that was asked (I digress) I think a man's body is extremely sexy, yet a woman's curves are just beautiful... it's pretty equal for me.
