Which CDs to buy?

Well, for Christmas I got 40 bucks to spend on Amazon, and I wanted to know which Sondheim CDs I should get.

Already, I have:

Into the Woods (revival cast)

Sweeney Todd (original broadway highlights)

Assassins (original cast)

and

West Side Story (Leonard Bernstein conducting opera singers)

I was wondering which ones I should get.

I'm thinking of getting Anyone Can Whistle. Should I get the original broadway recording or the concert version?

I also intend to get Merrily We Role Along. Which recording should I get? I listened to the samples on Amazon of the original cast recording, and I'm bummed that subsequent productions cut "The Hills of Tomorrow."

I'll take any recommendations.
Xack

Sunday in the Park with George- OBC
Pacific Overtures- OBC
Laura

I strongly recommend Sunday In The Park With George, Follies and Company.
Salome

Follies-OBC & Papermill
Company-OBC
Pacific Overtures-OBC
and the complete OBC of Sweeney Todd.
ConverseSneaker

Get the orginal ITW recording. That revival is awful.
Salome

agreed john mcmartin and the princes were thwe only good things about the revival.

the obc has joanna gleason's legendary performance and a stellar supporting cast.
Pannic

The ITW Revival recording was a Christmas present.

As for Sunday in the Park with George, is there much point in getting the CD if I already have the DVD?
Not Dead Yet

Company Company Company Company.

And the music in A Little Night Music is gorgeous.
Salome

i you get ALNM i suggest the OLC its even better than the OBC

Jean Simmons is the perfect Desiree, Hermione Gingold's Mmme Armfeldt is even better on this recording than on the OBC.

joss Ackland and David Kernan are stellar.
Sweeney Hyde

Here's my opinion on all of his shows:

West Side Story - OBCR
Gypsy - OLCR
A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum - OBCR
Anyone Can Whistle - OBCR
Company - 2006 Revival Cast Recording...it's more complete although certain performances from the OBCR CANNOT be topped...*hears Salome complain that the OBCR is the best in 3...2...1...*
Follies - OBCR and Complete Recording
A Little Night Music - OBCR
Candide - 1997 Revival Recording
The Frogs - OBCR
Pacific Overtures - OBCR and then the Revival...revival is more complete although I think the OBCR is better overall...orchestrations are far superior.
Sweeney Todd - Complete OBCR and 2000 Concert Version with the NYC Philharmonic
Merrily We Roll Along - Revival Recording
Sunday in the Park with George - OBCR
Into the Woods - OBCR
Assassins - OCR
Passion - OBCR
Bounce - OCR
Saturday Night - OCR

Hi. This is of a similar want as the original poster. I was wondering which are the 'best' recordings of: A Little Night Music, Follies and Merrily we Roll Along? I am a huge fan of Sunday in the Park with George (both CD's, the original for Peters, but I prefer Evans on the Revival recording,) Sweeney Todd (OBC being my favourite,) and Passion (OBC, for Murphy's Fosca.) Also, when I say 'best', I mean as in greatest performances, Best orchestrations, fullest ect.
Thanks.
Sweeney Hyde

IMO

A Little Night Music OBCR
Merrily We Roll Along Off-Broadway "Revival"
Follies OBCR

However I would also suggest the complete Follies Recording...but the performances and such are best on the OBCR.

Do not buy the OLCR of "Night Music". Get the OBCR first. Especially for Patricia Elliot's performance.
