Which cast recording is the best?Anyone?

Your best bet is the original Broadway Cast with Zero Mostel and Bea Arthur. The next best is the original London cast with Topal.

I prefer the 2004 revival recording.

It was a fun production to watch, visually, however, I feel that the original b'way cast is the best.

Hmmm I'm having a hard time deciding which. I like the revival's recording because there are more songs. But supposedly the original recording has better quality. Still, thanks for replying.

My vote is OBC; I had that on LP years ago. The CD includes the Wedding Dance and The Rumor, neither of which were on the LP. (The Rumor was cut from the movie). BTW, any votes for the movie cast album?

Seconded. Don't get the movie recording... Some of the songs have parts cut or are in different keys, and the voices aren't as good IMO. Especially since almost everything Golde sings is an octave lower! So irritating to me when I was trying to research the role before auditions and I couldn't figure out which version was the "right" way (as in, the way it's done in the show). I would definitely opt for one of the Broadway recordings.

The exception to this is if the liscensing company (MTI, Samuel French, etc.) uses a revival version. For example, MTI liscenses a revival version (either London or 1995 Broadway) of Company.

I like Topol as Tevye...but I havent had the chance to listen to the Original London Cast Recording. I do have the OBC, and love it...and the 2004 Revival Cast, it's okay...Not excellent. And the Movie Recording, which is great, because it has Topol.

As much as I love Zero Mostel...and I am a major fan of his..i always felt that Topol was the better Tevye. And the OLC recording is superior to the Broadway recording. only problem with the London recording is "The Rumor" is not included.

The only reason why "The Rumor" is included in the musical, is because they needed to break up the serious drama thats in the second act, I am sorry... It's a filler song. I dont care for it all too much, it's cute...but it's filler. It's like "All er nothin'" and "It's a Scandal! It's an Outrage!" in "Oklahoma!"....just filler songs.

Its a Scandal is a great number though..I agree "The Rumor" is fiuller but its Yente's only musical material. and its good ot have a complete recording.

Norma Crane, the movie's Golde, apparently wasn't much of a singer; she came across as something of a female Rex Harrison, who was noted for his Sprachsingen, a hybrid of speaking and singing. Miriam Karlin was the London Golde; as I remember, she had a deep voice. Maria Karnilova, the original Golde, was probably a soprano.
