What You Like About [Above Show]

This game was started at the Finishing The Chat forum, and I thought it is a good idea.

It's of course the opposite of the other game.

I'll start with

Pippin
Felix Felicis

Out of context, 'With You' is an incredibly beautiful song.

Passion
Apples2for10

It's almost Webber-esque the way it's formatted.

Carousel
Disney-Bway27

On top of having a brilliant book, the score is undoubtedly one of Rodgers' very best.

Titanic. Smile
hyperactress23

It uses the stories of actual people. (Although it changes some details.) Plus the music is amazing!

The Light in the Piazza
Pounce

The Light in the Piazza

Beautifully crafted music and songs with an emotionally intense story that has a surprisingly calm pace.

tick, tick...Boom!
SmallTownIngenue

One of the best rock/pop musical scores I've ever heard.

The Fantasticks
hyperactress23

The music is so much fun to sing along to!

Billy Elliot
Quique

Not too familiar with the material yet, but from what little I've seen and heard, it looks exciting. Which is good considering very few recent shows have caught my attention.

Cats
Beagle On Stage

Those individuals who like to dress up and stuff sure seem to have fun with it.

Fiddler on the Roof

The wonderful balance of entertainment and tragedy.

Martin Guerre
Quique

The original overture is gorgeous.

By Jeeves
Beagle On Stage

The legendary aspects.

Anything Goes
wtfchuck

Patti LuPone in the 87 revival. Also, "You're the Top" is one of my favourite MT songs. Defnitely my favourite from that era.

When I Look At You.

Sweeney Todd

The way it seamlessly blends tragedy, romance and comedy into one.

Mamma Mia

Pierce Brosnan's heavenly voice.

We will rock you?
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

Freddie's songs (and they are Freddie's in the public consciousness, like it or hate it) reaching a wider audience.

Jesus Christ Superstar
Beagle On Stage

Ted in the Farewell Tour. There is no denying that he isn't 30 anymore, but he still rocks the hell out of it. I have never seen such completely unglued applause as after he drove the merchants out of the temple.

Once Upon a Mattress
SmallTownIngenue

Some great, classic Broadway music in there. I especially love "In a Little While" and "Normandy." It's just really cute.

Phantom (Kopit/Yeston)
Beagle On Stage

The moderately dark portrayal of Carlotta, as opposed to the way she's straight up comic relief in the ALW version.

Mass

No comprendo.
Beagle On Stage

It's an interesting piece, but not one I care for due to its tight-assed agenda. It has some lovely music though. Here's the wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_(theatre)

Children of Eden
SmallTownIngenue

"In Whatever Time We Have" is a beautiful song.

Nine.
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Nine: The new single version of "An Unusual Way" by Griffith Frank.

Phantom

Later days
David
Jester-Jester Johnson

"Melodie de Paris" is a great song.

"The Wizard of Oz" (RSC)
Angel-of-Music*

everything. I was obsessed with it as a child, watched it every night and made my family call me dorothy Laughing

I think its just magical, it has an appeal to all ages and never loses its charm.
Plus the jitterbug is an awesome song.

guys and dolls
Disney-Bway27

It's an all-around brilliant score. Smile I really enjoy Guys and Dolls!

Titanic!
Yakko

It's pretty impressive that they can mange to make a ship sinking believable on stage.

The Drowsy Chaperone
Mungojerrie_rt

I think Geoffry Rush is going to be in it in Melbourne. That would be awesome if he was still in it by the time it toured.

Cabaret
actor

It does well drawing you into the politics of the time and I like the sexy score.

Wicked.
ActingDude17

"Wonderful". The lyrics in it are the most brilliant in the entire show.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
jackissensational

The characters are so ridiculous, but their struggles are universal. Plus some fierce belting opportunities. Hello? The "I Love You Song?"

West Side Story.
SmallTownIngenue

I am a sucker for Romeo and Juliet stories. And the music is so, so beautiful. "Somewhere" and "Quintet" are pure, pure genius.

Bat Boy
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Bat Boy: It's so quirky, immediately infectious and just an interesting show all around - plus, what unusual source material!

Legally Blonde: The Musical

Later days
David
Disney-Bway27

I find parts of the score enjoyable and relatively humorous. It's far from what I consider a good musical, but it's not horrible in small doses. :] Heaven knows what I'd do if I had to sit through the whole thing though.

A Little Night Music
Mama Rose

^In short, one of the top 10 most brilliant shows ever written.
Extraordinary music and lyrics, flawless script, insightful character work.
One of musical theatre's finest achievements.

Carousel
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Carousel: Agnes De Mille's stunningly beautiful pas de deux for Louise and the carnival boy in Act II.

Allegro

Later days
David
Beagle On Stage

I like that it's a musical.

The Secret Garden
Quique

I'll never forget the adorable set.

It had a big dollhouse which represented Archie's mansion. Tiny lighting fixtures would illuminate the room each scene took place in.

By Jeeves
Mungojerrie_rt

Very funny. I sounds like Webber didn't try and just let the music write itself.

Evita
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Evita: From a performer's perspective, it's a great show in which to perform an ensemble track. There is so much to do!

Tell Me on a Sunday

It's delightfully unpretentious. Just a string of songs with pleasant tunes. I especially like Unexpected Song.

Show Boat
Disney-Bway27

"Ol' Man River" alone makes me love it. I love the whole thing, but you can't be that song.

The Little Mermaid
SmallTownIngenue

I really enjoy a lot of the new songs, like "She's In Love" and "The World Above." I just found the show really adorable and entertaining.

Rock of Ages
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Rock of Ages: Liza Minnelli's interaction with the cast on the Tony performance is really the only thing I like about this piece of drek.

American Idiot

Later days
David
Beagle On Stage

I like that it's a musical.

Drowsy Chaperone
Disney-Bway27

The wit. I consider it one of the best musicals of the decade.

Ragtime
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Ragtime: The original staging. In particular, I'd like to praise the phenomenal things that Graciela Daniele did with the musical staging and choreography of that production. If that production wasn't basically paying for all of Livent's costs, then it would have been the success it deserved to be. Even with all those extra expenses, the show kept its head above water for 2 years and was not the failure that the marketing team for the revival make it out to be.

Seussical

Later days
David
jackissensational

I kind of publicly hate Seussical, but I must admit that it gives set, prop, and costume designers some great, fun challenges, but unfortunately few productions I've seen have really taken advantage of that. I suppose that just because of cost, though.

Little Women
WhyWeTellTheStory

Sutton Foster, Megan McGinnis, and Maureen McGovern

Chess
Quique

Catchy-ass chick songs.

Oh, and "Anthem," even tho I crack like a chain-smoking hag at the top note.

Blood Brothers
ActingDude17

The story and also "Tell Me It's Not True." The ending in general is very satisfying.

Godspell
Mama Rose

It's a versatile piece that you can do almost anything with, and also "Bless the Lord" is a great song.

Hair
BeingAlive

Mama Rose wrote:

Hair

The fact that no show truly captured the essence of the bohemian values of the Hippies and the era, in the fantastic manner that Hair did!

Gypsy (2003 Revival with Bernadette Peters as Rose)
Alm

Gypsy (2003 Revival with Bernadette Peters as Rose) - "Rose's Turn" becomes less of a moment for the writers and audience to unconsciously indulge their sadistic side when it's performed by somebody who's actually hot.

110 in the Shade.
Disney-Bway27

As far as the show goes, I consider it quite average. But I looove "The Rain Song."
Disney-Bway27

You know what, I didn't post a show.
Thanks David. Wink

1776
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

1776: I'm probably not the best person to answer this, as I can't stand 1776. Hmmm.... I like that nothing silly happened to even further cement it's already overrated reputation - like winning the Pulitzer Prize. How's that for something nice? Wink

Zorba
Beagle On Stage

I like that it's a musical.

The King and I
Yakko

The Uncle Tom Cabin ballet. It's for me one of the best moments in the movie version!

Cats.
Disney-Bway27

It's one of the Rodgers and Hammerstein's best, imo. It's a great musical--the music, the book, everything. Love it.

Fiddler on the Roof
Beagle On Stage

Cats - I guess it's a creative idea. But I'm stretching to find something good about it.

Fiddler on the Roof - A true ensemble cast that relies on good performances from all. If any of the smaller roles are weakish links, the feel of the show crashes and burns. And the leads are all great roles, unique from each other in all respects, that allows you to showcase all the lead players in a repertory-style company.

Sugar
Salome

I love the performances of Robert morse,Tony Roberts and Cyril Ritchard.

WIll Rogers Follies
Brigantine

Ah! An excellent one for me!

A really moving tribute to the man, and full of great songs (Give A Man Enough Rope, Favorite Son, No Man Left For Me).

She Loves Me.
Salome

the original leading men Daniel Massey and Jack Cassidy give two of the great romantic comedy performances ever preserved on recording.

Lolita My Love
Mama Rose

Strong lyrics and a few good songs, especially "Broken Promise Land of 15." Plus, Dorothy Loudon is perfect as Charlotte.

Passing Strange
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Passing Strange: It's intriguing subject matter done in an interesting way. Some super music here too.

In the Heights
pittising_poyns

Lin Manuel Miranda... such a fantastically talented guy. It boggles me how a show as diverse and energetic as In the Heights could come from one man's head.

Meet Me in St Louis
Salome

i like a few songs..but other than that its just an overblown stage version of an intimate little film.

Camelot
Disney-Bway27

I LOVE the score. It's one of my favorites.

Finian's Rainbow
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Finian's Rainbow: There are some really great songs in the score.

Legally Blonde
wtfchuck

Legally Blonde Some great songs and a brilliant score. Stands alone as a great show without just being a cheap musicalisation of the film.

The Lion King
Yakko

Say what you will about the sets but there's no denial that it is outstanding!

The Little Mermaid
Oli-Ol

The Little Mermaid Flounder is really cute Very Happy And some of the chord progressions give me goosebumps. And the rollerskating idea is really clever.

Next to Normal
pittising_poyns

The OBC cast is stellar. It also introduced me to Adam Chanler-Berat. Voice crush alert!

Taboo
RainbowJude

What You Like About [Above Show]

Taboo: It was a super show until Rosie O'Donnell got her hands on it! I like that earlier version, is what I mean.
