What was it about the 90's for you?

Tell us older ones what might have been great about the 90's that we failed to notice!
Salome

I wonder the same thing...although we had the best president since Roosevelt in the 1990s...the pop culture wasnt as thrilling as in past decades.

The Simon/Nornam The Secret Garden, though I could have seen it in 1989 as I am near Norfolk, where it was developed. One of my big regrets was missing it here.

The first time I visited NYC...my first musical on Broadway was Miss Saigon.

I graduated from High School- THANK GOD! I was happy to get out of that hell hole! LOL!

I came out to NY to live and have been here ever since! Smile

And Third Eye Blind kicked a--!

Okay, I was negative about the 90s in my first post, so I wanted to add:

Having been born in 1991, all of my wonderful firsts were in the 90s! Including my first stage musical: Phantom of the Opera, and my first performance: Wizard of OZ! Hmm, looking back, I did love the 90s. **sighs**

90s pop culture:

Well, for someone like me, the 90s was when hip hop really hit it big, and was than rolled into every other style of music possible. I still look back at the first 5 years of the decade as one of my favorite musical periods. That's when New Jack Swing hit, and informed a lot of my favorite music.

For example:

Shai - Shai
Color Me Badd - CMB
Jodeci - Forever My Lady (one of my all time favorite songs was from this album, "Come and Talk to Me".)
Silk - Lose Control
Bell Biv Devoe - Poison
Boyz II Men - All of their albums

It was also big because of the proliferation of house and house hybrids, mainly Techno, Hip-house and Acid House, which have continued to be influential up to this time.

The early 90s were pretty awesome:

~ Strawberry Shortcake
~ Cabbage Patch Kids
~ The Smoggies (who doesn't love a TV show named after the bad guys?!)
~ Light Brite
~ That game system where you could hook it up to your TV and draw on it

Not to mention, later on:
~ Toy Story
~ The Babysitters Club Movie!!
~ Clueless
~ Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion
~ Newsies (Little-Christian Bale singing and dancing)
~ And, because I was an 11 year old girl: Titanic

Plus, Buffy The Vampire Slayer premeired in 1997
metaphor17

JEM! Laughing
jazzygirlsings

Lite Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and JEM were DEFINITELY from the 80's...

Ah, but they were still rampantly and ridiculously popular until I was in about grade 5... so that brings us up to 1996.

Also ridiculously popular? The Barbie and the Rockers movies.

It ran from 1985-1988...just because you first experienced something in the 90's doesn't mean that it was a new fad...

Those things were all HUGE in the 80's! They were things I grew up with...
opheliarose

Cabbage Patch kids were 80's too.

Such a big thing in grade school!
djcobra

I have to agree with Jazzy.

It's kinda like saying that TMNT and Transformers are from this decade, just because they've got movies coming out this year.

Gilligan's Island was still hugely popular in the 80s, so much so that it became a cartoon ("Here on Gilligan's star...PLANET!!!), but that doesn't make it part of 80s pop culture. It's just 60s pop culture that happened to hold on.

Good call.

I blame my early childhood for spanning across two decades and confusing me.

Strike that one from my list and replace it with those cupcake dolls that you could turn into a doll or a cupcake and that were scented.

(Unless that was actually in the 80s too...)
AllThatJazzHands

One word: Nickelodeon.

That channel pretty much sums up my life in the 90s. Also, reruns of Saved By the Bell, Power Rangers, The Spice Girls, the re-emergence of bubble gum pop (i.e. BSB, NSync, Britney...).

Cherry Merry Muffin was 1988-1990...so it's a cross-over! LOL!

THANK YOU!!!

I've been trying to remember what they were called for about two weeks now and my mom just keeps telling me that she thinks I imagined them. (Granted, she also still thinking I imagined The Smoggies because no one else remembers them.)
shakalakababy

i loved the 90s.

That was back when Nickelodeon was still good and had all those amazing shows that i miss quite a lot. We were reminiscing about this at rehearsal last night.

and of course the Spice girls were the sh*t. I watched spice world a couple of months ago after having not seen it for like 10 years and it was ridiculous

There are so many things about the 90's! This is a myspace bullentin that is going around

You're a 90's kid if:

You've ever ended a sentence with the word "PSYCHE!"

You just cant resist finishing this... "Iiiiiiin west philladelphia born and raised..."

You remember TGIF on ABC and wouldnt miss it

"Miss Susie had a steam boat, the steam boat had a bell..miss suzie went to heaven the steamboat went to hell_o operator please give me number 9 and if you disnconnect me i'll kick you from behind the fridgerator, there was a piece of glass, miss suzie sat upon it and broke her little ass_k me no more questions, please tell me no more lies the boys are in the bathroom zipping up their flies, are in the cornfield the bees are in their hives .......................... miss suzie and her boyfriend are kissing in the D-A-R-K- D-A-R-K D-A-R-K dark dark dar dar da dark"

You remember when Kurt Cobain, 2Pac, River Phoenix, and Selena died.

You know that "WOAH" comes from Joey from "Blossom" and that "How Rude!" comes from Stephanie from "Full House"

You remember when it was actually worth getting up early
on a Saturday to watch cartoons.

You got super excited when it was Oregon Trail day in computer cla** at school.

You begged for some GAK, and when you got that they came out with scented GAK, and when you got that they came out with funny scented GAK.....

You remember reading "Goosebumps"

You took plastic cartoon lunch boxes to school.

You danced to "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls, Females: had a new motto, Males: got a whole lot gay-er. (so tell me what you want, what you really really want.)

You remember the craze, then the banning of slap bracelets and slam books.

You still get the urge to say "NOT" after (almost) every sentence...Not...

You used to listening to the radio all day long just to record "Your FAVORITE song of ALL time"

Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? was both a game and a TV game show.

Captain Planet.

You knew that Kimberly, the pink ranger, and Tommy, the green Ranger were meant to be together. (this was meant for young 80s children)

When playing power rangers with friends you fought over who got to be who............and still all ended up being Tommy or Kimberly.

You remember when super nintendo's became popular.

You always wanted to send in a tape to America's Funniest Home Videos... but never taped anything funny.

You remember watching home alone 1, 2 , and 3........and tried to pull the pranks on "intruders"

"I've fallen and I can't get up" -- Help is on the way Mrs. Fletcher

You remember going to the skating rink before there were inline skates

Two words... Trapper Keeper.

You wore socks over leggings scrunched down

"Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack, all dressed in black, black, black, with silver buttons, buttons, buttons, all down her back, back, back" SHE ASKED HER MOTHER MOTHER MOTHER FOR FIFTY CENTS CENTS CENTS TO SEE THE ELEPHANTS PHANTS PHANTS JUMP OVER THE FENCE THE FENCE THE FENCE
he jumped so high high high he touched the sky sky sky and he didnt come back back back til the forth of july ly ly he jumped so low ow ow he stubbed his toe toe toe and thats the end end end of the elephants show show show

You remember boom boxes vs. cd players

Writing M.A.S.H. notes.

You remember New Kids on The Block when they were cool

You knew all the characters names and their life stories on "Saved By The Bell"

You played and/or collected "Pogs"

You had at least one Tamagotchi, GigaPet or Nano and brought it everywhere

You watched the original Care Bears, My Little Pony, and Ninja Turtles

Yikes pencils and erasers were the stuff!

All your school supplies were "Lisa Frank" brand.(pencils.notebooks.binders.etc.)

You remember when the new Beanie Babies and talking Elmo were always sold out.

You used to wear those stick on earings, not only on your ears, but at the corners of your eyes.

You remember a time before the WB.

You've gotten creeped out by "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"

You know the Macarena by heart.

"Talk to the hand" ... enough said

You always said, "Then why don't you marry it!"

Sorry it's so long
Chevstriss

Mary Had a Steamboat is probably as old as the 30s.

and Miss Mary Mack goes back to like the 1700s.
Chevstriss

The single most important life change in the 90s has got to be cel phones. No more could you say "sorry I couldn't let you know i'd be late cuz I couldn't find a phone". Virtually no more excuses why you didn't call, leave a message, whatever. No more excuses on why someone has to wait at a meeting place. Think they are OK? think they will stop and call? People had emergencies, tie ups, traffic jams, whatever and you just had to wait it out and see why they hell they were late.

Unless you are camping, those days are gone.

Think of how many movie plots change just because we can instantly communicate w/ each other, w/ out "finding" a phone.
