What to wear...?I'm always confused about what to wear to an audition. If it's high school theatre, I'll just go in whatever I wore to school that day, but what about community theatre? Should you dress up? And how do you "dress for dance/movement" but still look professional? |

Well, it depends on what exactly you are auditioning for. A good generic audition outfit would be something like gauchos, a simple top, and dance shoes.

For girls:
Maybe a colorful and bright (but not lime green mind you, more like a red) top that shows a little skin but isn't distracting, and black pants or a black skirt that ends right below the knees. for guys: I usually wear a button down long sleeved collared shirt, with the sleeves rolled up, and khakis or nice dark wash blue jeans. |

That's what I usually wear for auditions. Although, I wear character shoes, because I don't own dance shoes. |

My friend swears by this:
black jazz pants Leotard with lace shoulders (This is what she uses.) Dance Shoes She has hair down to her knees so she also puts her hair up into french braid buns. Well... she makes me do that. |

Well, I never dress up much because I'd rather move better in comfortable clothes. This one girl who auditioned in our group was very talented, but you could tell she was stiff in her 4 inch stilettos. (This was for Oklahoma auditions 2 weeks ago)
Me? I wore cute capris, ballet flats that I can easily dance in, and a classy and pretty, but comfortable DKNY shirt. I got compliments from the judges on my shoes which was nice |

if your going for a specific character, i find it best to stay in character so go in costume if it helps you! otherwose, something that's comfy and that you can move around well in. |

My friend [who's an actor] told me that wear something that identifies you - like a scarf or an article of clothing that is "you" and no one else's.
You don't want to be the "70th girl wearing a black leotard and dance shoes" - I've found in the past that by even wearing my hair a certain way can make all the difference. Usually, I go for comfortable - so I would wear black gaucho pants, a nice top (usually black with a head scarf) and my character shoes. And if you do decide to put on make-up, don't go overboard. I've made that mistake before and it wasn't pretty. |

do you really want to wear dance shoes?

I mean like ballet slippers. Yeah, characters are dance shoes, I just never think of them as that. |

Yeah... and it's REALLY thick. Pincurls make her look like she has an afro. |

Call me crazy, but I've always heard it's not a good idea to wear too much black at auditions. I think it makes you look boring rather than professional. The important thing is something you feel comfortable AND pretty in!

Yup. You're usually performing against a black backdrop, too, so if you wear black you'll blend in. Thanks for all the help, guys! |
