What to see on a short trip. . .

So it looks like I'm going to be in NYC next month for a day or two which I think will give me a chance to see 2-4 shows, if I can catch a matinee and an evening on both Saturday and Sunday. I know I want to see Spring Awakening, but what else should I try to catch?

(I've seen Les MIs like 3 times and Cats twice. Also have seen Wicked and the Chicago version of the Pirate Queen. Saw Hairspray and Avenue Q in Vegas)

Some one said Mary Poppins, but I didn't like the movie so I'm not too sure about that. Also what about Gray Gardens? I'm not sure what that one is about.

I appreciate any opinions/suggestions.

Grey Gardens. its hands down the best new show of the season. Check out the description on Playbill on line.

Christine Ebersole gives the performance of her career. Mary Louise Wilson and the legendary John McMartin are also brilliant in it.

I'm glad you're seeing Spring Awakening. It is phenomenal.

I personally loved Grey Gardens. Beautiful music, really interesting story that I had not known about, and the actors are PHENOMENAL. If you want to see acting at it's finest, then go to this musical. There was a moment at the end where I couldn't help but cry. I know, I'm a sap. But it was so good. The characters are amazingly developed. And, it's only $26.50 student rush, and usually the student rush isn't sold out.

I'm also a huge fan of The Drowsy Chaperone. Very funny, has something in it for everyone, has the big musical theatre numbers that are wonderful. I laughed so hard.

Enjoy!!
Sweeney Hyde

The Drowsy Chaperone is probably the best musical comedy on broadway right now, although i haven't seen Grey Gardens.

Company is certain to be good, although the CD is now where near as good as the original, as far as the Revivals go.

I hate the movie of mary poppins as well, so when my uncle got me tickets I wasn't as excited as usual. But I went with no expectations and loved it so much that I was crying at the end. It's a very feel-good show and would recomend it.
The Ooops Girl

You should definitely check out Grey Gardens. Christine Ebersole gives one of the most beautiful performances ever to grace a stage.

Curtains, Company, The Drowsy Chaperone, and The Producers are also pretty good.

avoid Producers now..Tony Danza is starring. ugh.
The Ooops Girl

Tony Danza's gone - John Treacy Egan is Max Bialystock now. I've never seen him before, but I heard he's fantastic.

Curtains has been getting fantastic buzz and word-of-mouth on BWW.com

If you can't find a matinee you like, check out the Performing Arts library of the NYPL at Lincoln Center. There's lots of interesting musical-related stuff to see:

Thanks everybody. I appreciate all the advice. I'm leaning towards Gray Gardens. My friend really wants to see Avenue Q, so I might have to suck it up and go to that too. Either way, if I can find an affordable, but clean hotel now, I'll be set.

wait! before you choose I want to suggest that you might want to try Pirate Queen anyway. From what I've heard, They made lots of changes,so it won't be exctly the same as the Chicago version (this one is supposed to be ten times beter then the Chicago previews were too)

Just a thought.

Have fun while you're down there!

Pirate Queen no matter what changes are made cant compare with Grey Gardens. Grey Gardens is simply one of the finest shows iv'e ever seen.and it has a stallar cast. Ebersole in her role of a life time. the legendary John McMartin, and the great Mary Louise wilson.

You make it sound so good, I'm almost afraid I'll be disappointed. Smile I actually liked the Pirate Queen in Chicago, even though everyone will now question my taste in musicals. In my defense, I did see lots of problems with it which I would love to see fixed on Broadway, but Stephanie J. Block is so wonderful and just such a presense . . . Anyway, Grey Gardens does sound great and I do hope I get to see that too . . . I just need more time and money I guess
