What stories SHOULDN'T be musicalised?

I'm wondering whether you think that some stories/material, even if blessed with great creative MT people to work on them, would not benefit/would be made worse if made into musicals? Perhaps they're good enough on their own, or perhaps music would be completely the wrong medium to express them. This might include musicals that have been made, but didn't need to have been made. Or perhaps you think that any story, in the right hands, has the potential to sing?

For example, I haven't seen the musical of Billy Elliot, but I'm not hopeful. The movie was about fairly no-nonsense people who were suspicious of boys dancing. To have them all singing seems... wrong. Perhaps it completely works.

Thoughts?

Legally Blonde, and the answer is really a simple reaso....wait.

Serious answer=Juno. Good writing and script, but I don't see it becoming a musical any time soon. There doesn't seem any good place in the story where a song woudl be appropriate.

Streetcar Named Desire...and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, for that matter. Don't touch them.

I actually think that Legallly Blonde worked pretty well and Juno could be good.

I really cannot see Spiderman working. I just can't.
broadwaybirdie

To Kill a Mockingbird.
Mungojerrie_rt

The Discworld series. They're great books, but they wouldn't work with singing.
Maskerade might, only because it's a parody of the Phantom of the Opera and music features in the story. Other than that, leave them alone.

What about the masterful adaptation in the Simpsons episode 'A Streetcar Named Marge'?!

"Stella! STELLLAAAA! / Can't you hear me YELLA! / You're puttin' me through HELLA!"

One of my old flatmates went to see Streetcar, knowing about it only what he'd got from The Simpsons, and was disappointed and confused when it wasn't a musical...

Personally I'd hate to see The Crucible turned into a musical.
Brock07

Cloverfield (which I watched last night....deff the WORST movie I've ever seen in my life. I could make a movie better than that. With a small camera.)
Nettik

Ah, that's one of my favorite episodes of The Simpsons... Very Happy

Anyway, I'd have to say anything involving a highschooler who just transferred to a new school, a jock who's father is the coach of the basketball team, and two twins who sing romantic songs and play opposite parts, and anything involving a play called "Twinkle Towne," should not be made into a musical.

OH, WAIT.

To be honest, I hope "Watership Down" never becomes a musical.

You do realixe both Streetcar and Crucible have been made into highly successful Operas right?

i really don't think manga/anime should be made into musicals. i mean, maybe small little ones that play in japan or something, but come on. pokemon the musical? (and i've heard people walking around saying "inuyasha the musical")

i mean, i'm a huge fan of anime/manga, but i would not like to see it mixed with musicals.
Anno_Domini

I proudly believe that ANYTHING can be made into a musical, so long as its done properly by the right people.

I personally think that a musical adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird could be wonderful
What Is This Feeling?

I think Schindler's List should never be made into a musical.

But... trying to find the right people...

On the Anime musicals thing. There is a set of them that are... selectively nice. I cringe at the first one in the series, but it's a nice set of musicals. The Sailor Moon musicals.
I'm a fan of the SeraMyu, K? (Just listen to this and tell me it's not at least tolerable. To a Brand New World is nice too.) Besides... you can get the music FREE here: http://seramyuantics.takaginaosama.com/music/music.htm

One musical that never should have been: High School Musical (+1) Musicals should not have sequels, just for money's sake. (I cringe on the inside at ALW and Poto2! )

i can see JRB doing a great musical version of Mockingbird.
PappyCat

There are so many things that shouldn't.

I'm really against the idea of any more Mel Brooks movies being made into musicals. The Producers is wonderful..I haven't heard anything from Young Frankenstein yet, but I hear it's good. However, I just can't imagine Blazing Saddles or Spaceballs in musical format.
Salome

well the script and performances in Young Frankenstien are all very enjoyable..but them usic and lyrics are bland and rpeetitive not like Producers at all.

actually Blazing Saddles or High Anxiety would have been 2 better films for Brooks to musicalize instead of Y.F.
PappyCat

I can see Blazing Saddles more than I can see Spaceballs. That being said, Spaceballs is one of my favorite movies. I think it would make a terrible musical, though.
Salome

I tihnk Spaceballs was one of Brooks worst films. he didnt even use any of his regulars in it.

Yes, I do realize this and there are plenty of other books and plays that work as operas but wouldn't work at all as a mainstream musical.

Too late. I haven't listened to it yet, but I have a recording of Spiderman the Musical.

And Salome, Streetcar is a successful opera? OCU did it last year, and I hated it! It was like a three-hour-long funeral dirge, the music was so boring.
Salome

WOW how could you dislike that music. Andre Previn is a genius.
littlemisstheatregirl

I love Harry Potter, but it's gonna suck as a musical.

Spaceballs has actually been ranked as a worse sci-fi parody than Starcrash.

Mungojerrie_rt

Well, I love Spaceballs. Got the DVD sitting above me.

Isn't Dom Delouise (sp?) a regular?

Don't make a musical of it.
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

The guy who writes the "Broadway Abridged" parodies actually had a brilliant point on the Brooksway shows. When Mel went with "Young Frankenstein," he missed his chance with the material that had real potential. One of his films was perfect for the NY stage.

It has a musical comedy ready plot, larger-than-life characters, it has four songs in it, it's coherent with a sensible plot arc. The best candidate for musicalization? "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." Especially considering the fact that when he did "Young Frankenstein," Mel decided to work really out of his element and try to write melodies for a parody of big 80s British mega imports (he failed).
idTAPthat89

Legally Blonde.
Oh wait....too late.
Damnit.
