Sweeney Hyde

What roles would you want if...

What roles would you want if you were the opposite sex? I know it is kind of an odd question...but everyone knows they have thought about it before. Mine are:
Mama Rose in Gypsy
Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd
Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard
Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera
Mme. Thenadeir in Les Miserables
my_work_my_name

Nah, it's not an odd question...here are mine:

Florence - Chess
Dot - Sunday in the Park with George
Eva Peron - Evita
Velma Kelly - Chicago
Mother - Ragtime
Orestes Fasting

The ones that come immediately to mind are Sweeney Todd, Javert in Les Misérables, the Emcee in Cabaret, and Ko-Ko in the Mikado.
Salome

King Arthur
Henry Higgins
Sweeney Todd
Judas
Leading Player
Emcee
Luc

I would really want to be Mayzie or Gertrude in Seussical: The Musical!.

And maybe... you know what... I've never really thought about it. Maybe Belle or Babette.

The villian in the musical of musicals: the musical
lostquiche

All my favorite parts are guys!! Crying or Very sad

Enjy-Les Mis
Raoul-Phantom
Scar-Lion King
Seymour-Little Shop
Rum Tum Tugger-Cats
Jack-ITW
Rachel W.

Good Question...

I think some of the cool parts I could play if I were a guy would be the Major-General in "Pirates of Penzance" (even though I really can't sing that fast), Uncle Max in "The Sound of Music", and Jesus or Pilate in "Jesus Christ Superstar".
Aimee

All the tenor roles, they get all the best ones.

I'm coming back as a Tenor. I don't even have to be a really good tenor, just be able to sing the notes, be ok looking and able to walk. People would then bend over backwards to give me the roles!
Cake_in_Song

Sweeney Todd, Jack in ITW, Dickon from Secret Garden, Che Geuverra in Evita. There are probably others, but I can't remember them right now.
Theaterfan101

Well, I get to play alot of guy roles already so I don't really know. Since most of the best roles are written for men it is hard to decieded. I think it would be fun to be Mr.Bumble in Oliver!
Eponine93

Hmm... can we age ourselves?

1. Enjolras- Les Miserables- According to an online test, I am 60% Enjy... He also is the most likely Les Mis boy to fall for me... I'm a Les Mis character quiz addict...
2. Rod- Avenue Q- I think I could really have fun with the character
3. Jimmy "Thunder" Early- Dreamgirls- That would be entertaining
4. The Phantom- Phantom- EVIL! EVIL!
5. Tevye- Fiddler- He's quite different from me, so that would be fun and challenging...
what_the_heck013

This has been asked before.
Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd
Reno in Anything Goes
Joanne in Company
Sally in Cabaret
Luisa in the Fantasticks
Desriee Armfeldt in A Little Night Music
The Witch in Into the Woods

Lady Macbeth in Macbeth
Kate in Taming of the Shrew
Lady Bracknell in the Importance of Being Earnest

I'd love to one day start an all-male theatre group... or one that has men play some female roles.
BEaSTARandSINGlove

Sweeney Todd
Seymour
The Beast
Man in Chair
Eponine93

SEYMOUR!! How can I forget Seymour?
Beagle On Stage

I could play the Hell out of Luisa in "The Fantasticks," Eva in "Evita" and Reno in "Anything Goes." All I need is boobs and my feet about four sizes smaller.

Aimee wrote:

Don't hold your breath. I'm a tenor with the best male voice in the company, mad dance skills and seduction to burn, yet I've been shafted more times than I can count. Besides, you're a soprano, you don't NEED the tenor roles. Laughing Wink
Amber

Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar

oh and Mark Cohen in RENT.
broadwaybaby124

Javert-Les Miserables
Bobby Strong-Urinetown
Fiyero-Wicked
Man in Chair-Drowsy Chaperone
Jack-Into the Woods...hell, i'd play Jack as a girl.
Lena

Hmm.... Definitely Billy Flynn in Chicago. Very Happy Then.... probably Henry Higgins in MFL and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Scar in The Lion King would be quite attractive too Wink !

But in general, I'd still prefer the female parts Smile
Roger's Chica

I don't really think about this a lot, since I never ever have a chance of being a guy....
But if I were a man, I'd sing "The Streets of Dublin" all the time. For everything.

And actually... maybe I'd want to play Leo Frank. Because it looks like a ridiculously challenging role.
dcrowley

Hmmm... I would have to choose

1. Eponine/Fantine in Les Mis
2. Christine in Phantom
3. Lucy in Jekyll and Hyde
4. Janet in Drowsy Chaperone
5. Nancy in Oliver
6. mayzie in Suessical

Eponine93

I've got to add more. I would kill to play any of the guys in 1776, particurally the ensemble. I'm an ensemble girl through and through, and 1776 has one of the greatest ensembles in any musical, with plenty of little parts that could be so much fun to ham up. Right now, I want to play Witherspoon because the guy who was Witherspoon in the production I saw was "making his stage debut" (in other words, he was in the show because he had a penis and couldn't act to save his life) but I would kill to play any of the guy roles.

Has anyone seen that done, where one of the little ensemble roles was played by a woman? I've always thought because of the wigs and everything, if you couldn't find 25 men it wouldn't be such a tragedy to throw a deep-voiced woman in there (keeps the audience guessing).
Lepitot

Elphaba - Wicked
Lola - Damn Yankees
Reno - Anything Goes
Lady of the Lake - Spamalot

I knew one gal who was in an all-female cast of 1776, and another who was in a cross-gender cast. So it's possible!

I know that, but I think that its a role that could TOTALLY be played either way. Because in the story Peter Pan is a guy. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I just think that it could be played by a guy really easily.

A woman playing peter pan can make peter seem like a little boy. A Man playing peter pan is creepy. Imagine a thirty year old guy coming in your window dressed all in green with tights and asking you to "fly" with him.

Yeah, peter pan should be played by a girl.

There is also the concern of a little kid doing 8 shows a week, though. Child labor laws and all. Wink
broadwaybelle22

^Nobody ever said this was for broadway. Community theatre doesn't do 8 shows a week. And what about all the young Simbas ect. on broadway? They're alowed to do a number of shows a week.

But still, I don't think a little boy anywhere from ages 8-12 would be able to pull off a lead role like that.

Peter is definetly best played by a girl.

YAY! Another excuse to show this:

I know he does a lot of charity work etc but he still creeps me out.
eXcessDrama

Hmmm I'd want to be

Jimmy - Thoroughly Modern Millie
Link - Hairspray
Jack - Into the Woods
Bloom - The Producers
Roger's Chica

I'll be honest. I did a community production where Peter was playing by a FANTASTIC 13-year-old boy. We were concerned that his voice might change during the production and the woman who played Mrs. Darling ended up having to hide out in the house they build for Wendy during... "Mysterious Stranger" (is that right?) because he couldn't hit those notes and she could... but overall, he was FAR better in the role than any of the flouncy girls would have been.

In fact, he was in the top 20 of Canadian Idol during the second season, did some correspondance work after he got voted off and now is in a couple of commercials around.
vanillabean

In no particular order:

Fiyero - Wicked
Raoul - PotO
The Phantom - PotO

Joe Vegas - Fame
Jesus - Godspell
Street Singer - Threepenny Opera

That puts quite a spin on the founding fathers. I can imagine a cast where some of the smaller parts are played by women, but if the five male leads who really sing (Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Rutledge and Dickinson) are played by girls, that would be kind of weird.
