What role to go for?

A good community theatre is doing DY next summer. I want to do the show. I'm not sure if I should go for any part or not. Here's my analysis, any advice?

I'm 37, I'm a very competent singer and dancer. Acting, not much experience or comfort level. Mezzo. 5'9, light red hair.

It would be fun to go for Lola or Gloria, just for kicks at the auditions -- why not? I adore dance and they have a great choreographer. I've ordered a movie script to get familiar with the characters and practice scenes to get more confidence with the acting. I am also doing more workouts so I can be as in shape as possible for Lola.

My real life is more that of Meg. I might not be old enough to be Meg. She doesn't get to dance - oh what a bummer!

Realistically, I'm fine in the chorus, probably a little overqualified for it, but it would still be fun.

And actually, this is a good opportunity because I could see myself doing any of thee parts, but I'm going at it right now looking for a Lola type song for the auditions. Should I back off that and go more generic?

I realize this all likely comes down to the rest of the cast and where I fit in among the other women and men and how I stack up in talents with the other people at the audition.

I would suggest spending your time working on your acting. I know this is a musical, so singing and dancing are important, but in the end it is still theatre so acting is MUCH MORE important.

Directors often pick the great actor who is an average singer over the wonderful singer who can sort of act.
