i just found out that a local community theater i have done work at before is doing West Side Story this summer, and I'm really excited but I have NO idea which role to try out for!

I'm 16 and about 5 foot 7, with a good body. I can look anywhere from 15-19 though. I have dark hair and dark eyes, with tan skin. I've actually been told I look Puerto Rican, so I know which ethnicity to try out for in this show haha. I'm a mezzo soprano, I can go down to the low F and up to the really high D. 7 years dance experience, though I'm still not the strongest, I can move and learn choreography easily. What role do you guys think I should go for?

I honestly think you should try out for Maria. My friend tried out for the role (she was an alto but really pulled off Maria's range) and got it. Also, Maria really doesn't dance as much as the Shark girls or Anita (or at least not in my school's production).

Well you're the right age for Maria, and you easily have her songs in range if you're a mezzo soprano. Also, looking the part might go a bit for you Smile

But if your not after a lead, I suggest Rosalia or Consuelo, one of the girls who work in the dress shop with Maria; medium sized parts who get to sing in some of the best songs Very Happy

Um ... no offense, but the two posters above who say that Maria can and should be sung by a mezzo soprano are quite mistaken.

Maria is most definitely a soprano role. She has to sustain several high notes, including an A-flat in "I Have A Love" and a high-C (above the staff) in the Tonight quintet. This is one of the most operetically written soprano roles in musical theater (I'm not saying it's the most operetic, but it's up there).

If you aren't as comfortable with the dancing, I'd say go for one of the Shark girls like Rosalia or Consuela. If you feel you could handle some pretty intense dance, you could try for Anita, though they usually cast her as older (early 20's).

In the last version of WSS I did, my friend Emma played Maria, and she is a mezzo yet she managed the songs... I was saying it can be done Very Happy

I can do the high C, I used to be a first soprano but have lost a bit of my strength because I always have to sing the middle line in my school chorus because I have good pitch so they need me for difficult harmony. It's a pro and a con I suppose.
i'm not sure about trying out for Maria, but I'll definitely consider it!
I'm thinking about going for Rosalia or just a sharks girl
Whatever role I get, it's sure to be a really really fun show.

And yes, definatly try for a Sharks girl, they get much more limelight than Graziella and the other Jets girls Very Happy

I agree, go for one of the shark girls, or even possibly Anita if you feel comfortable with her songs.

I personally "A boy like that" one of my favorite songs in the show.

i went to the audition on tuesday, and it was fantastic! Very Happy

they had me read and sing for both Anita and Maria, and both went better than I expected. As I said, I'm not that much of a dancer, but I accomplished the dance routine! i am friends with the director, so that made me less nervous. the audition went very smoothly, and everything was swell! I'll know if I have a callback on Saturday morning soon. I probablyhave one, considering I've gotten leads with this theater before. And the cast list will be up by Sunday!

There's a lot of stuff going on with this show, with it being super unorganized. No information about the cast has been released except the leads, and the role of Anita went to this girl who is the director's favorite because he teaches at her school. I don't see how it happened because, not to be cocky, but I am just as good as her and she is a very pale, thin, blonde girl. Not very Anita-ish. It's all very chaotic, and I'm quite disapointed in this theatre. I'll keep you all posted, I might have gotten Rosalia, that role has not been given out yet. I will definetly do my best to keep you all informed!

She sings in i feel pretty. She doesnt have any lines but gets to sing "or to much to eat" solo in i feel pretty. Not the best part but still gives you a fair bit to do. xxx

it's really bothering me. this director is usually so much more professional.
