what part to go for?

I just found this site and I thought it might be useful...I'm auditioning for the Secret Garden in like 2 weeks and I know a little of the music but I don't really know anything about charactors. Lily, who I know is the lead part is cast already so she's out of the question. I'm 17 and its a professional production so they will cast age appropriate most likely, but I've done several professional shows already so I know I am capable of it. My last big roles in professional productions were Winifred in Once Upon a Mattress, Lucy in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, and Cunegonde in Candide if that can give you sense of what parts I'm good at. I generally do more comedic in your face parts, but I'm capable of more serious roles (but its not nearly as fun Very Happy). I have both a mezzo-belter range and an operatic soprano. I don't really care how big the role is, but I thought I heard somewhere that Martha is supposed to be teenagerish? If not her are there any other roles I should go for or should I just go for the ensamble?? What are the age ranges for the lead parts?? Or even the not so lead parts? Oh so many questions! Very Happy I just want to get an idea of what charactor to go for so I can figure out what range I should do my audition peice in. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I can't find a charactor breakdown for this show anywhere!!

I'd definitely do a belt song, and go for Martha. It sounds like you'd be great at her, and she's right in your age range. Good luck!

In the actual book, Martha is about 18, and Dickon is about 16 or younger. The musical casts them slightly older, I believe.

My daughter did TSG with a professional company several years ago, and their Martha was early-mid 20's. Their Dickon was a young-looking 26.

Mary was 12 (in the book she is 10), and it probably all depends on how old the Mary they find is, since everyone has to fit with her.

Good luck.

Ok so now I should ask...Any ideas on what song to sing?? They want us to prepare 2 songs and they are gonna pick which one they wanna hear. My problem is I usually do comedy so I tend to do more goofy audition peices, and I know thats a no no for this show. But I also don't wanna sound tacky, nothing peeves me more than people singing stuff like "On My Own" from Les Mis at auditions (not that its not a great show, just overdone at auditions)...I like Kurt Wiell stuff a lot, maybe I kind find something he composed.....help..? Martha would be best. I wanted to play her, but when they did it for me, I was too young to play anytihng but Mary, and ended up being a dreamer. The tryout song for the girls wanting to play her was Fine White Horse because we were required to do songs from the show.

Martha is a belting part, and shes funny too so i dont think it would be bad if you did a funnish belting song, but she also has a cockny accent, or some british thing and i think if you could show that off at ur audition it would be good . maybe something from my fair lady? .. like wouldnt it be loverly? just an idea.

No. No. No. No. NO.

Martha has a YORKSHIRE ACCENT (and Dialect) Which is NOTHING AT ALL like a Cockney Accent. The Show is set in Yorkshire (which is in the North East of England)/India. NO SOUTHERN ENGLAND accents at all.

The English people living in India have Standard Queen's English accents.

Not everyone in England has a cockney accent. Evil or Very Mad
