The first time I saw it, even though I knew the music, Memory still made me cry. Grizabella was absolutely amazing, and that song is just beautiful.

Cats satisfys my every theatrical craving. It combines music, dance, comedy, drama, and a great spectacle of a set all at once.
My favorite thing about cats would have to be the mystery!

The fact that almost every time you see it, it's different, and that all the characters have different personalities waiting to be discovered.

I love everything about Cats!!! The music, lyrics and dance, all the different characters, the costumes and makeup, the different ways it is done in different countries, the set and the lighting, and the online Cats fandom! I love how you can visit so many original fan-built websites and communities and meet heaps of great people interested in the same things as you! =^-^=

I definatley agree. There are so many things about CATS that are great. I love the fact that there are message boards, such as this one, that can bring all different CATS fans together.

there was this tall gray cat in the background with an amazing presence and voice and a charactere that I adored. Two months later I found out his name: Munkustrap.
I knew the music before the musical, I even sang memory as a kid, semi professional in restaurants and hotels togheter with my Mum (when you're only eleven there's no stagefever yet )
QUite honestly, I can say for quite sure now that if it would not have been for Munkustrap and also seing it IRL I think I would not have hooked, as it is a fact that at some point at that age I even thought the music sucked and was just a cheat for constantly repeating.

I was talking to my friend about this last night...
I have to say that (even though I've only seen the show on DVD so far), my favourite things are the characters, the dancing, the costumes, make up and set. I'm not overly fussed with the songs, which seems a strange thing to say about a musical but I think I appreciate the more technical aspects of the show.

My favorite thing has to be the makeup. It's so innovative, creative, and elegant. It takes a lot of practice to put it on perfectly, so I admire the performers and makeup artists who are able to do it quickly.

SpecialtyAt the time I saw the show in Los Angeles (85-86), my favorite part of the show was the set and lighting. I was a technical theatre (Techie) fanatic about that time, and the draw for the show was John Napier's design. The Shubert had the large "into the house" set (since it was semi-permanent - not a tour). When the show started, I was then intrigued by the performers. One I remember being extremely impressed with was (I believe) Pouncival, who was up in the rocking chair - doing what we call the "Tomcat Salute!"
When I saw the show in Edinburgh, and later in San Diego, I went on their backstage tours, and got to see a lot of the technical equipment and setup. The more impressive of the two was the UK Tour set and equipment because of the Intelligent lights. Most of the lighting used by the UK set is the IL, and I had never seen one until then.
Although I have come to enjoy the performers a lot more (especially because of the lycra), my first enjoyment came from the set and the lighting... I include the orchestra (what there is of it at times) Lately. I had written a PREQUEL where they brought in a lady bass player. At the last regional in Fullerton, I discovered they had a lady bassist...

Re: What is..I'll have to agree with littlgriz: I love meeting the cast, chatting with them, etc, etc, But as far as the actual show itself, I love the magic of it when you put the creativity of the costumes/makeup, music choreography, set, lighting, etc together... its ability to mesmerize and draw you in in a different way.....something special happens in this show which sets it apart from all the rest....it's facinating!

Costumes, make up, background setting and dance are for me the main traits. But then again I love how some of them play also with their character: face expressions, attitude, etc.
