What is your concept of Sweeney Todd as a stage production? In my mind, I've always imagined Sweeney set in a meat packing plant with ghosts destined to perform Sweeney for forever and eternity.Having seen a few productions of the show, a lot of theater companies take their creative concept and incorporate it into their show. I saw a production of Sweeney, where the entire show was inspired by the artwork of Edward Gorey. As for others, I've seen many where the show takes place in an asylum with the inmates telling the tale of Sweeney Todd. I believe that the most strange version I saw of Sweeney was a production where the actors wore minimal clothing and walked about the set, doing strange dance moves. Horrible one, really. What is your concept of the show? |

I like your idea of the ghosts, personally.
Hmmm... I'm so used to the original, I hadn't really thought about it... |

I would've loved to see the Gorey-inspired one. |

In my head, I'd like to see the scenic design in black and white, but with geometric shapes stuck on in a mis-mash kind of way. Lots of black, white and grey triangular pieces at odd angles. That way, everything is a sharp edge.
Costume fabrics - the darker the character, the heavier the cloth and the dirtier. I like the movie's costume for Sweeney, very heavy. Anthony is the lightest and cleanest, being the innocent character. Johannas would be a mixture of heavy and light, so light-coloured leather or linen. The colour comes from the larger-than-life characters: Lovett, Beadle, Pirelli and, of course, taking a leaf from the film, the blood (but not LOADS of it). Ideally, I'd love to have some kind of London cityscape in fog-obscured muddiness in greys, looming over the whole stage. So when you're looking at it, it's like seeing London inside a cliff-face cave. |
