What is it with actors from the Harry Potter movies?I have never seen the musical before today on video, and as the movie was running, i kept notice more and more actores from the Harry Potter series was showing up. Three of the leading roles are played by actores that also are staring in the HP movies. Those who has the roles of Beadle Bamford, Judge Turpin, and Mrs. Lovett have also stared in the HP movies. What are the chanses for that happening...
Does the actores sing them selfes? no?

Yes, the actors do sing for themselves.

Well, the Harry Potter movies use a great deal of talented British character actors... something required for this movie as well, so it's only natural that they would star in a movie like this.

Dubbing is considered a big nono these days, unless absoulutely necessary like Minnie Driver in POTO (even there she made up for it by singing Learn to be Lonely on the Soundtrack), so so you can always be at least 90% that in any movie musical, the actors are doing their own vocals.

Especially with a movement towards feeling over format. Lots of actors in the 50s musicals could sing well, a la Natalie Wood, but because they didn't quite have classical voices, they were often dubbed.

It was written into their contract that they have to do Sweeny Todd, just like Tim Burton will be in the next Harry Potter movie as a 6th former at Hogwarts.

Cause Helena wanted audition and she got it. Alan Rickman was perfect. And so was Spall. it's just a coincidence that they're also perfect for their Harry Potter roles.

I was referring to the era. My apologies, I should have clarified.

I liked them all very much. But they all rock.
Even though Rickman made Turpin soooooo awkward to watch.
Did you not expect hermione to come running in?

Imelda Staunton (Umbridge in the last Potter Film) won the Olivier Award for Best Actress for her role as "The Bakers Wife" in Into the Woods.

They talk a LOT about the movie in one of the Mugglecast Episodes.
Now, I love Mugglecast, but it really frustrated me to hear them talking about musicals. I don't know why. Maybe 'cause I don't tlike my Harry Potter life and my theatre life overlapping.

I love Staunton ... but i find that different from Carter. i just don't think she works as Mrs. Lovett... Rickman was creepy though... he sounded WAY too much like Snape...

That's not a bad thing

When I saw "Sense and Sensibility" (I know ... not Sweeney Todd), my American best friend's mom was like "Snape!" (although the movie was earlier) He sounds similar in that, too.
And yup. Knew about Staunton.
Gahh...now i Wish i was allowed to see Sweeney Todd...

Alan Rickman sounds similar because it's his VOICE.... he's got a very distinctive voice.

Part of the reason why I love Rickman. His voice, his looks, and his acting. Very good actor and I'm happy he was casted as the Judge. He brought something new to him, not sure what it is though

I kind of don't think having a distinctive voice is an excuse though.
I have a really distinctive speaking voice, myself, and I get a lot of crap about it whenever I'm in a play. "You sound too much like Abby!" "I'm listening to Abby say Duncan's lines!" etc etc. It's kind of frustrating, (especially since the girls with normal voices don't have to do anything) but it is true.
I didn't really mind in this case though. I kind of adored watching Snape!Turpin, but then again I just can't get enough of Snape!

I'm not sure what we're talking about here, I just read one post and thought he had a distinct voice....

Rickmna just talks like that...it is his own voice and he can't change it...so you can't seriously expext his Judge to sound different from his Snape...it's the way he talks.

Yeah, I dont think the whole throw in an accent would have worked for him like it works for Depp in nearly every movie he does.

the problem isnt that you have all the actors from the harry potter movies in sweeney todd, its that you have all the harry potter actors playing very simliar characters in sweeney todd. Think about it:
Mrs Lovett: insane woman obsessed with a mass murderer; Bellatrix: insane woman obsessed with a mass murderer
Beadle Bamford: smarmy, slimy minion; Wormtail: slimy smarmy minion.
Turpin/Snape don't exactly have similar motives (I don't think) but they definately have a similar personality(i.e. creepy sexuality, self-righteousness, pride, feelings of superiority toward most others)
of course they are going to sound similar; they are playing the same basic characteristics but in a different setting!

^ Mrs. Lovett is a lot deeper than that.

^^ So is Snape. BLASPHEMER!!
Sorry... but I'm very protective of Snape. He's been my favorite character since Book 2 =D Hermione is a very close second. And personally, I would never want Alan Rickman to change his natural speaking voice. I think it's sexy.

^I meant in simplest terms looking solely at the similarities between characters and why they might sound similar. Of course I know mrs. lovett is deeper then that! I played her for God's sake! And I CERTAINLY did not mean that was all there was to the charachters. Trust me I know my Harry Potter AND my Sweeney Todd very well and that's an insult ot both sets of characters. But there is a certain amount of similarities and that was my point. Many similarities in character+same actors= everyone sounding the same in both movies.
That was all I was saying. I was not implying that all Mrs.Lovett is is a crazy woman obsessed with Sweeney. If she was, she would not be the most interesting character in musical theatre. Sorry if I sound a little pissy, but I kind of hate being misunderstood and people thinking I don't know anything.
Snape's my favorite character too (but slowly being surpassed by Dumbledore)! I have a thing for dark heroes, I suppose.
