What exactly is wrong with watching bootlegged performances?

I have been reading on this board, and I see a lot of people fundamentally opposed to watching bootlegged videos of Broadway performances online. My question is what is fundamentally wrong with that? Legalities aside, I see nothing.

One could argue that it is taking money away from the industry, but I don't think so. Anyone who is dedicated enough to search online and find a download client, and is also willing to squint at a shaky, overexposed, grainy video is probably a big enough fan of musicals that if they had the opportunity they would gladly shell out 40 bucks for some bad seats. But these people, for whatever reason, location is usually a big one, will not be able to see whatever show it is on Broadway any time soon.

So why limit these people from getting to see a show whose soundtrack they have listened to over and over again, and scanned youtube for every promotional clip they can find.

PS Just in case you were wondering, I personally have only ever see one bootlegged show (Spamalot) and it was just because I really wanted to understand how they got from song to song, because the second act doesn't follow the movie storyline much at all.

uhh why were all the replies to this just deleted?

i fully understand why this thread is pointless but shouldn't it just be locked? what's the point in deleting the replies and leaving the original post? Rolling Eyes

i'm not saying i'm not guilty of watching them, but it's just that some people think it's not fair that you're seeing a performance without paying to go see the show where the money is actually going to the actors and the people who work at the show.

so let's just leave it at that and what everybody else has said already, cuz there are like a billion topics on this.

Stop deleting posts. My post count is dropping Sad
UniquePerspective

Ok. Whoever deleted the posts to this had no right. From the ones I saw, they were simply answering the question or dismissing the topic, nothing offensive at all.

I understand that there was another topic involved on this issue, and that this topic in general is redundant, but still, even if irrelevant, I don't think the posts needed to be deleted without warning from a mod.

Sorry, I haven't been on this board long and didn't realize there was already a huge topic on this. My bad.
shakalakababy

it's okay, nothing wrong with what you did. it's the mods that are getting out of hand

I like how none of the mods have stepped up to take responsibility for their actions in this thread, especially when something like this requires a quick explanation, cuz he/she knows he/she'll face a mob when he/she admits it.

Anyways, what I said earlier was that I don't watch bootlegs that are overexposed, grainy, and shaky.
Nick-Ko-Las Enigma

Start Off Topic:
Or the mod may have taken the action, shut down the computer and has gone out for the evening, or is watching tv, or is reading a book, or is in bed or many other things. The mod may be quite unaware of a mob of any sort that is waiting to be dealt with. But then that is just guessing now is it not?

:End off topic.
shakalakababy

i like how we're the mob that's waiting to be dealt with because of course the mod could never possibly be in the wrong.

So what happened to locking threads (not that i think this thread ever needed to be locked) but that would've made much more sense then deleting everything but the original post.

Mob is probably the wrong word to use, but considering the events of the past week, deletion of posts in a thread is still a very sensitive subject.

The action was taken by a relatively inexperienced moderator. Your posts have not been deleted, merely moved, and will be returned shortly. Your post counts, should you be concerned about them, should be intact.

We would appreciate your patience while the subtleties of dealing with offensive posts, while preserving a thread and subsequent NON-offensive posts, are dealt with.

The opposition to bootlegs by the site owner and therefore moderators is a matter of legal requirement. If a site is seen to be condoning illegal activities, such as bootlegging, by allowing posts on the subject to suggest this is acceptable, its owner can be considered an accessory to that illegal activity. The site owner would prefer not to have that label.

Therefore, bootlegging is strongly disapproved of on this site.

Thanks for your explanation.

Now that you've made Sally's and the moderators' positions clear on bootlegging, is it ok for the rest of us to discuss our opinions on bootlegging, whether they're for or against? Because if you're worried about what other's would think about the site owner or the site, now that you made your position clear, there should be no confusion at all anymore.
dolbinau

Are there any ever good quality bootlegs?

Tons.

Just in case this topic isn't cleared for discussion yet, you can pm me if you want and we can continue the discussion there.

I don't think a discussion of bootlegs is an issue. The site should not be seen as promoting bootlegs - as they are illegal. As Mumsy said - posts will be replaced as soon as the mods can move the non-offending ones back. This turns out to be a complicated process.
