What do you think of the film casting ideas?

Actually, I know nothing of the proposed cast for the film except for Johnny Depp as Todd.

I am trying to figure out how I feel about this. I'm a little leery about it myself. I deeply respect Johnny Depp as an actor, and I'm sure he would have the emotional range to pull off the highs and lows of the part.

But can he sing? Apparently he does sing a little in the movie Cry-Baby, although I've never seen it and I'm told the style of the movie is 1950's rockabilly, which is a far cry from Sondheim's incredibly difficult score.

Also, I think it goes without saying that while he is actually in the age range now, he still looks full of youth and vitality, which is not exactly what I picture Todd looking like. Todd is supposed to be a ruin of his former self, so ravaged that nobody but Mrs. Lovett recognizes him. (Even Pirelli treats Todd as simply an annoying upstart until he is allowed to handle the razors.) And wait until you see the reaction from Depp's fan base of teenage girls when they realize the plot requires him to have a daughter their age!

In short, I'm suspicious at best. I am curious what you all think of this news.
Monsieur D'Arque

I'm pushing for Danny Elfman as something... Todd or the Judge.
Salome

Elman ISNT AN ACTOR. He can't do the show.

I dont want Depp either..Il ike him alot as an actor but he is too young for the role and too boyish looking. plus I dont know what his vocal power amounts to.

I really want to see the great Christopher Lee as judge Turpin! Its been a rumor for a while but only that.
Monsieur D'Arque

Elfman IS in fact an actor, although one of little fame or acclaim. He was a common supporting player in the 1980s southern california freak-noir scene, appearing in various films. Also, his band Oingo Boingo was formed by three members of Elfman's performance-art group, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, which performed jazz music, comedy sketches and monty python style humour.

As of late, Danny has appeared in films such as The Gift. Serious musical theatre? Despite his roots, he is perhaps not. But if Tim Burton pulls off another of his claymation trips and directs Sweeney in his typical musical style, i see no reason why Danny won't hold his ground as Tim's musical leading man.

depp

While I agree Depp may not be able to handle it vocally, he is fully able to transform himself physically. The difference between Captain Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka is exactly my point.

What about a Mrs. Lovett?
Opinions?

Exactly... I do remember Crybaby and I loved that movie. I think with training he may be able to handle it though. I'm up to seeing it.
Salome

Mrs. Lovett...Kathy Bates,Imelda Staunton or Emma Thompson. all 3 are brillaint and all 3 are singers.
Megan the Phantom Girlie

Out of those three, I'd pick Emma Thompson.
BenjaminB

Emma Thompson would be the best choice. And Todd need to *look* older that Johnny Depp. And he must be able to sing. Like Brynn Terfel!
Kaiana

I agree with godspizzle. They would certainly be able to transform Depp to appropriate haggard/deathness. Though I'm sure most of the transformation would be done by himself. I admit though, I'm not really sure about his vocals. But I can't really imagine many actors in film anyway, being able to pull the character off. And I'm kind of worried about Tim Burton, I'm afraid he wouldn't make it look real enough. Though Big Fish was pretty realistic. I just don't think you can stylize Sweeney Todd too much. Wow that was long.

Lovett and Depp...

I would love to see Emma Thompson play Mrs Lovett - I think it would be fabulous! Another actress I'd like to see tackle the role is Toni Collette.

As for Johnny Depp, who knows how he will turn out? Just because he once sang in a band, doesn't mean he can manage one of the biggest male singing roles in the musical theatre canon. And besides the vocal issues, I am concerned that he is too pretty, too lightweight, not scary enough and not old enough.

Uhh... well, forgive me for being one of the handful of people on this board who actually wants to discuss musicals rather than spending all my time making random lists on the "Social Club" board. Don't get me wrong - there's a time and place for that kind of thing, but I think there's far too much of it going on and that it's causing far too much tension and fighting and arguing. Personally, I'd rather distance myself from that and do what I like to do best here: talk about musicals.

And that's the beauty and the nature of the Internet. Unless something is locked or deleted, I can actually respond to any post to which I want to respond in my own time. And it's not like I'm giving audition advice to someone who was asking for it five years ago; when I post a response in an older thread, it's usually because there is a salient issue that is generally relevant, i.e. about the show itself, or a character, or a song lyric etc.

And if someone wants to respond, or debate or discuss a point, great. If not, that's fine too. Again - that's the beauty and the nature of the Internet. And, like all those people making the random threads that I don't really like, I actually have the right to participate on this board (within reason, of course) in a way that makes it meaningful to me without fear of complaint or persecution from anyone.

That's all I actually have to say at the moment.

He is impossibly pretty. However, I think he can be very scary. Did you see him in the Astronaut's Wife? He plays the "bad guy" in that ( a dude possesed by an alien) and he really is scary. I think he is old enough, (he is 44) and I believe that he can appear older with makeup and just the way he acts the part. After all, lately he's been playing younger characters, Captain Jack Sparrow, and Willy Wonka. I don't understand what you mean by too lightweight though? Do you mean Sweeney should be more robust or something?
TychoBrahe

Unfortunately, he does still look young. Take Edward Scissor Hands and give him a white streak through his hair. That's all the aging we've got. He is far too pretty. Todd is, if anything, butch. The whole point is that the real world is has destroyed him. The real world is not pretty. Todd has been stuck in extreme working-class conditions. Go to your local UAW, the guys there look like Todd. He is everyman, not Johnny "I'm-Beautiful-In-A-Prebubescent-And-Androgenous-Kind-Of-Way-That-Drives-Little-Girls-And-Tim-Friggn'-Burton-Crazy" Depp. He is a light-weight. Does this look like someone who could incapacitate a plump-framed Italian with his bare hands? Todd is described as "heavy set." Unlike Turpin, he is quite capable of attacking someone openly and without aid. Turping is a cowardly beaurocrat who needs his office and his beadle to wield power. Todd should be large, a little ugly ("What did they do to you?"), and above all HE SHOULD BE A PROFICIENT BARITONE! "Oh, Johnny Depp is such a fine actor, he'll be able act like a good singer!" ARGH! Yes, acting is important, but this is nigh OPERETTA!

were's the aspirin? sigh...

I'm waiting for the Depp!Sweeney fangirls to show up... *plots* Twisted Evil

It's fun trying to explain Sweeney Todd to 6th grade Depp fangirls. Twisted Evil I think I broke several of them... *evil laugh*
YouGotsToLovett

Augh, that's what I hate...I don't want people to think I'm a Johnny Depp fangirl or I just plain like the musical!

I think the ugly should be more sexy-ugly that plain ugly though. Wink

This is what I have been saying all along since I first found out that he was in the film!!! I know of someone that wants to go see it with me and I KNOW it is because of that! God, help me! It would be nice to see it with someone that won't be getting excited over every move he makes in there!

When I found out recently that Emma Thompson was a choice for Mrs. Lovett, I was kind of annoyed because she would've been great.

I am kind of nervous about the choices, but I am just going to be patient and wait and see what happens. Maybe everyone in the film will surprise all of the skeptics out there!

I am just afraid that something so perfect will be butchered because of one wrong selection (i.e. director, actor, the way the story is played out, et.c.).

I guess not so much ugly-ugly as much as butch, a little rough around the edges. A guy who can pull off mutton chops. How I hope my fears will be proven wrong. Because I'm getting very tired of this bloodlust for Burton/Depp. Think of all those magnifacent prospective Todds... sigh.
