What do you think of Helena?Well, Marla, mrs bukket, Emily, bellatrix etc, etc. i just love Helena Bonham Carter, but i didn´t like her as mrs, Lovett. She´s singing with her own voice, instead of the character´s voice, and i simply think the character lacks of magic. What do you think? |

AwfulSinging voice - no support, no tone. It sounded so lazy and there was no conviction in her words because of it. I think that she's an impressive actor - although I'm not a fan of a lot of her roles, but she was out of her depth in this one.You're right - no magic. No magic at all. |

I enjoyed Helena in this role. She made Mrs. Lovett different than those who came before her. (a la Lansbury, luPone, Kaye) But I still enjoyed her preformance. her singing wasn't the best, but she had never received vocal trainging before. Things like her vibratto and strength in her voice that were missing were probably because she didn't have vocal traing for more than a year, only a few months. When I first started out with lessons, my voice was like hers. Hard to project, no vibratto, very VERY soft...... But 2 years since then I have developed a vibratto (though it is not totally full yet, but very much there) and i have learned to project my voice. Once again I think Helena did a great job as an actress, and a creditible job as a singer given the amount of vocal training she had.

I love Helena as an actress and appreciated her interpretation, but I was personally not fond of it at all.

Excellently, put. I second that. |

Re: What do you think of Helena?
I don't like what I've heard of her on the soundtrack. BUT your banner is HYSTERICAL! HAHAHA. I love it! |

I enjoyed her take on the role, but overall I think she made Mrs. Lovett too likeable. I found myself feeling kind of sad when she was thrown into the oven.

I love her as an actress, but I just didn't think she suited the role.
| Snow_White |
Definitely a very different take on Lovett but I very much enjoyed her performance anyway. I think it's good that she explored her character in a different way than others have...I like that she sort of interpreted things in a new way than what we are all used to.
| PittiSing |
I enjoyed seeing a new interpretation of the character, but her singing voice didn't impress me at all. I know it's not her fault, as she had had minimal vocal training, but it was unpleasant to hear her sigh through such a gorgeous score.
| ActingDude17 |
I didn't like her singing. Too high and gentle (i.e. Worst Pies In London).
Her acting in general was good, IMO. |
||||
| postmodern-mango-salsa |
there was more air in her voice than there was in the theatre.
and there were only 8 ppl besides me there when I saw it, so that's a LOT of air. just kidding, her voice wasn't THAT bad, but it was pretty bloody awful, I must admit. If you don't think about the stage play AT ALL, I could see how people would like her voice. Completely different STYLE of Lovett. Makes her more helpless and passive-agressive rather than the semi-self-sufficient woman I usually saw her as. |

Bahahah! Amen!! |

her voice wasn't strong enough to be mrs. lovett... it bothered me. that's all i can really say without being shot down.

ITS A FILM PEOPLE! YOU ARE NOT PLAYING TO THE BACK ROW OF THE ALHAMBRA THEATRE!!!!!!!!

Helena was great. | ||||

I really enjoyed her performance!
| Timmy_Wishes he was Quast |
Her performance was different. And i shall put it as i have said about the whole film "better than I'd hoped...not as good as I'd expected". But Helena stood out...there was something quite chilling about her performance, her and the boy who played Toby (shoot i can't recall his name) out shone Depp by some considerable distance. Thus re-affirming my opinion that he was poorly cast.
| Salome |
the kid who pplayed Toby couldt act for sh itt.
| pish123c |
Definitely! He's nowhere near the top of my list of best performances in the film. He was probably the worst actor in the bunch. I find it hard to believe that they couldn't find a child who could sing and have more than one expression on their face. |

I liked her interpretation of the character - it was different to LuPone or Lansbury, but I think that was a wise decision. Singing-wise it seemed a bit empty to me - she sang the notes and the words, but there wasn't a whole lot more behind it. Once I managed to remember that it was a film, and not a filmed version of the musical, I enjoyed her performance.

It's hard to say, I'm a huge fan of Helena Bonham Carter, but I try not to be bias.
I thought she brought something knew to the character. It seemed like she actually cared for Tobias, but was still selfish and amoral. Her acting was splendiferous so good i make up words for it Her singing is rather high, but it's a film, not a stage production. Still, I don't like having to sing higher notes and strain my voice when I sing to the soundtrack.

I have the biggest crush on Helena. I love her and she is a great actress. Anyone who plays one of my favourite HP characters is amazing. lol. (So pretty much everyone.) She has a wonderfull voice and I heard she is getting her own CD.

I have to agree with Salome. The singing was good enough for the film, it worked well, but HBC would die on stage. Same for Depp.
| Kragey |
Which is why I'm glad it was a movie, not a stage production. =D And yeah, like I said: huge crush on Helena since Merlin. |
||||
| Mistress |
Did you still have a crush on her in Planet of the Apes?
|

| Salome |
She was at her hottest in Wings of a Dove and Hamlet

hmmm...
Not bad, not bad at all. I didn't mind her in Twelfth Nght either, although the makeup artist did go a little crazy and made her look like an undead bride:
okay maybe that's not the best one, but it was the best I could find.
Okay, I'm done |
||||
| Kragey |
I so want to marry her. I'm ganked as Hell that Burton got her first. T_T |
||||

WOW...that is a HOT photo of her.

All the more sexy. |

I saw the film a couple of weeks ago now and at first I really wasn't sure what to make of her. I wasn't terribly keen on her singing but I loved her portrayal of the character - very subtle compared to Lansbury or LuPone. She made Mrs Lovett very sensual and also quite nonchalant, as if she had seen a lot and was rarely phased by anything. I suppose in that sense, her singing style complimented the character.
I also think visually she looks great in the role. |
||||
| Amber |
I had to get in on the photo-sharing goodness.
So beautiful. I want to be her when I grow up. |
||||
| Mistress |
I very much agree with you. She was a very interesting Lovett, in exactly the way you said. That's the way the whole movie was. Different, but good, although the singing was only good for the movie (no one would survive on stage). My only qualms were mainly over the cutting of some of the best songs and parts of songs and lacking dark humour of the piece. |
||||
| Kragey |
HOW HAVE I NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE?! ::steals:: |
||||
| Mistress |
Wow...she looks like a Victorian prostitute of some sort... |

Joining the thread rather late, I was really put off by Helena's thin voice and limited range when singing. I prefer robust singing, no matter who the character. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to go back and see the movie a second time to re-assess my opinion. Maybe I would think differently if I ignored the singing and focused on her acting.
| qmechanic |
I was also annoyed that whenever Johnny Depp is singing with someone else (Pretty Women, My Friends, A Little Priest), you can't hear the other actor (Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham-Carter). Umm, it's a duet not a solo! Couldn't the movie producers amp up Rickman and Bonham-Carter's voices?
| Salome |
what are you tlaking about?? Rickman's voice is much richer than Depp's in the film and if anything Rickman drowns out Depp.
| YouGotsToLovett |
Yes, she's incredibly gorgeous Rickman's voice was incredible. it's sad he didn't get his Johanna. (Mea Culpa) |
||||
| qmechanic |
Whoops, I guess my memory lumped Bonham-Carter with Rickman. I wish both Depp and Rickman were a bit louder in Pretty Women. The orchestra dominates them at times. I'm not a big fan of Rickman's voice, but he does have more vibrato which is nice. |

WWW.HELENA-WORLD.COM, people.
Photo-ey goodness. There's a particularly lovely photo of Helena with angel wings somewhere on there. |
||||
| Monsieur D'Arque |
At first, I didn't know if Helena was actually going for the softer, thinner sound. It fits her portrayal of the character. Whereas Angela and Patti were bawdy, slovenly wenches, Helena was sort of a ghost, a wisp of who she presumably had been. Her voice fit the character.
Also, it reminded me a lot of Julee Cruise, the secondary female vocalist of the B-52s. Of course, more people will remember her as the Road House Vocalist on "Twin Peaks," and as the singer of the Nineties single, "I Love You Always Forever." |
||||
| pish123c |
Totally agreed. |
||||
| Salome |
Helena smokes the same brand of cigarettes I do..Dunhill. useless trivia. LOL

Yes, I have registered there on the forums |

Helena smokes? Didn't know that. |
||||
| Salome |
Helena is one of the most outspoken smoking advocates in Briatian! awsome gal!
| Monsieur D'Arque |
Download either Angelo Badalamenti's "Music from Twin Peaks," or Julee Cruise's "The Voice Of Love" to see how much she sounds like Helena.

Learn something new everday, I guess. |

I'd give my lungs to smoke with her |

i thought she was absoloutly brilliant as mrs lovett!

| pennypingleton1994 |
I love her as an actress, but I just think she's an okay singer.
| Salome |
hell..frank sinatra was just an okay singer and he was the greatest vocalist of all time.
| RobertDarling |
No, he was an okay technician. He was an excellent musician (as demonstrated by his unique, expansive phrasing, his legendary breath control, his uncanny pitch, and in no small measure his mike technique) and an excellent singing storyteller. (as demonstrated by his ability color his voice, to sing dynamically, to connect with an audience, and finally, act a little.) These things together made him a GREAT singer for his day, arguably the most unique popular American singer ever, and certainly one of the most influential. Hardly "the greatest vocalist of all time," though. Just one of thousands of who added their distinctive style to the vocabulary of Western popular singing. And Helena is not, well, any of the above... but in her defense, she's a better actress than Frank. |
||||
| phantomphan85 |
Helena was excellent in the movie, in my humble opinion. Her performance completely changed my opinion of her as an actress (in a good way!!)
| YouGotsToLovett |
Helena is the only reason why I gave the movie a chance (and Burton). And I'm glad I saw the movie. Very nice effects.
| Kragey |
You put it much better than I could. Bravo! |
||||
| Salome |
and she can connect with an audience as well as frank.
so therefor Helena = a better actress than lupone sinatra = a better performer than lupone |
||||
| Salome |
wait..are you saying you didnt adore Helena before Sweeney???? |
