What caused Dean Jones to leave the OBC?

All I've heard is that he had health problems, but can anyone offer something more specific?

Dean Jones

Although Dean Jones was officially released from the show due to hepatitis, a reminiscence in Craig Zadan's Sondheim & Company reveals other reasons for his departure:

Dean Jones wrote:
I liked Company... don't get me wrong. I just felt unsatisfied in the role and I was going through my own divorce at the time. I felt that the show was antimarriage, perhaps because at the time I was antimarriage. Every night after the performance I would be on the phone with the attorneys. I'd gotten soft on the Coast, I guess. I'm not built for a year's run. I can never do that again. I was miserable and obviously I didn't have hepatitis, but Hal was nice enough to let me out.

and still no one has ever played Bobby better than Jones.

How's Larry Kert in your opinion?

Des.
Salome

Larry is vocaly quite good but lacks the soul that Jones brings to it.

Jones lives "Being Alive" Kert uses it as a showstopper.

Adrian Lester of the London revival has a quite interesting potrayal of Bobby as well.

Boyd Gaines on the other hand is a waste of time.
Salome

Il ike Gaines better than Lester but neither come close to Jones.
Webster

i really wished they could have recorded Dean Jones singing "happily ever after" the original end song. It's so much better than "being alive."
Salome

Happily Ever after" is a wonderful song..but Prince was correct..its not a good end song for the show.

I have a DVD copy of the 1996 version of Company with Lester in it! He was in my opinion the best Robbie I've ever seen! I think the 1995-1996 London production of Company was way better than the B'way Revival! It did last longer in London!

Well, I'm not sure I would say that. Don't get me wrong, I like "Being Alive" and I like the fact that the song ends the show. But I think that "Happily Ever After" wouldn't have been a worse/wrong choice, just a very different one that possibly wasn't a part of the vision that Prince had for the show.
