I'd have to say How Can Love Survive & No Way To Stop It! Theyre fun, and different, and NEVER overdone.
And although this isnt the question, Do-Re-Mi & Favourite Things, I dispise them with all my heart! I belive the devil inspired Rodgers & Hammerstein to write that one. I absolutely can't stand those 2.

Lonely Goatherd!!! Everyone needs a little yodeling in their life.

"Dixit Dominus" and the "Laendler."
"Dixit" is the opening scenes at the abbey; and I heard that even Julie Andrews could not sing the difficult lyrics to "Laendler" that they just made it as an instrumental accompaniment.

And probably I Have Confidence because it's an amazingly dramatic song... sad that it's only in the movie. Can you even imagine how it could be done on stage...? |
Both times I've done the show, they have kept I Have Confidence in...It's an interesting, but fun transition...Mother Abbess leaves Maria by herself in the Abbey, then the song starts as she begins to think about the turn her life is about to take...As she does this (both times) there have been nuns that come in to dress her behind a curtain as she sings. They give her the guitar and a hat...
Here's where it got a little tricky...We had moving archways that came down at a diagonal and then offstage as Maria waved and walked through one, making it look like Maria was coming out of the abbey and basically skipping down the street...A scrim comes down behind her (For the scene change to the interior/exterior of the house) Then, of course, she eventually comes to her destination...
She looks out front and the lights come up behind the scrim, so you can see what she's "looking at" and she freaks out...Then composes herself, Finishes the song with gusto and exits up toward the scrim...
LOL!
It was fun and I'm glad they kept it in...That song says so much about Maria's character...I loved doing it!
I would have to say I Have Confidence and No Way to Stop It...(The second being particularly strong the most recent time I did the show! It didn't even end on the high note...My last director had it end on an argument! Which was even cooler, in my opinion! They sang, "Nothing else as wonderful as..." then the Captain yelled, "I! ME! ON ONE THING ALONE WE AGREE!...." It was very dramatic!)

Yes this is so very difficult! I'd say The Sound of music and My Favourite Things. But The Sound of Music reprise (when the Captain enters) always makes me cry too.
Just curious, having only ever seen the film, I have no idea what's No Way to Stop It. Seeing as everyone seems to like it so much, I must be missing out on something very good (okay, stupid pun). Could anyone say briefly where in the show it occurs and what it's about?
Thanks!

Favourite SongsMy two favourite songs from The Sound of Music:
1. "Edelweiss": I think that the way this song uses something so tiny to represent all the wonderful things that are to be left behind - the loss of an entire way of life and everything that is familiar - is remarkably touching. It's so much more that the little, diagetic song it appears to be. Like "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" in Cabaret, the dramatic and contextual placement of this song enlarge the symbolism of the material into something that is theatrically effective, becoming an essential signifier in the show's semiotic framework.
2. "The Sound of Music": Forget the idea that concept musicals were only around from the 1960s and 1970s. Rodgers and Hammerstein already tried their hand at that kind of show with Allegro in the 1940s. And although The Sound of Music is a book show, here's an opening number that sums up one of the major themes of the show - discovering the power of song as a true, free and emotional form of expression. Even though it may not be as sophisticated as say, "Tradition" (from Fiddler on the Roof), it's just as perfectly tailored to situation and character and shows how R&H were always working towards keeping the dramatic momentum of their musicals in motion.

Climb Ev'ry Mountain Reprise- a beautiful part of the show that made me love the stage version after despising the movie. Makes me cry every time.
Maria- a very clever song that shows the nuns' personalities, and the dynamics between them.
