Wearing an Elphie Hat to Wicked?

Hey Everyone,
As some of you know, I have a *way super amazing, if I do say so myself* copy of Elphaba's hat, and I'm considering wearing it to the show in Chicago in August. I would of course not wear it during the show; that would be a bit rude, and I always dress nicely when I see Wicked, or any other show, it's just a sign of respect to me; but I was just wondering if the management, or fellow audience members might find it rude, or just strange? I'd particularly like to take my hat to BTEC, just to see how close it actually is to the real thing! I don't really care if people think it's funny, I just don't want to upset people.
Austin
Set_Buildin_Dad

What the heck. Be a revolutionary, HAVE FUN. Just don't wear it during the show so you block someone'w view. Theater is all about the experience, so do what you feel is right to get everything you can from your time there as long as you don't impede other people's enjoyment as well. It'll be your memories after all and you will be paying a lot for them.
I'm Defying Gravity

That is what I would do! Very Happy
shakalakababy

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. If I saw you i'd probably think "wow that's so cool, i wish i had that hat, etc." so yeah i think it's a great idea, as long as you take it off when the performance starts
rebellohan

me and my friend went in full costume (i was green Smile)so dont worry about it hehe
Bagel

So long as you take your hat off during the show, there's nothing wrong with that at all!

I remember going to see a performance of Scarlet Pimpernel where 4 or 5 people were decked out in incredibly beautiful and expensive period-appropriate costumes...they looked like they could have been in the ensemble.

Some folks were dressed up for the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and I was jealous of their cool costumes, so I'm sure someone will want to know where yours came from. Others may look at you funny, honestly, are those going to be the kind of folks you really care what they think? Mr. Green
Nedame

If you're going to take if off during the show then I don't see a problem with it Very Happy if the people around you think it's strange well who cares : ) and if they get upset...they're just strange

when I saw Wicked it was my birthday so I was wearing a tiara the whole time...it's not a costume but I was still getting some odd looks from people
Luc

Well, witches are......
girls. Neutral
wickedboy

Yes, in Wicked the witches are girls, but I think Elphaba's hat is pretty gender neutral..., okay, yeah it's Elphaba's hat, so it's iconic with the character but really, even if it wasn't gender neutral looking, I don't think I'd really mind all that much; I just thought it would be fun; and I've seen more than a few guys dressed as wizards, or other male magical folk for Halloween wearing something akin to a witch's hat. But honestly, the Wicked Witch was actually my first costume as a tick-or-treater at 5, so I've never really cared that much, and gender aside, I thought it would be fun; besides, I've never been one to conform to the norm anyway. I don't really care if people stare... or more likely ask questions, I just don't want it to violate some rule or make the theatre mad... I wouldn't wanna get banned; I will want to go again... and probably soon!
Austin

what the ----. you guys are so stupid.

when people go to see the full monty do they go naked to "HAVE FUN WHILE SEEING THE SHOW"?

no.

if youre gunna see this show at all (not really sure why anyone would see this piece of ---- anyway...) wear normal clothes. no one wants to see you dress like a dumbass.

edited for swearing NE
wickedboy

broadwaychild,
Wow, you're eloquent!
Um... I'm just talking about wearing the hat and normal clothes, as I said in my original post! And why did you even comment if you're going to call Wicked a "piece of ----"? You can dislike the show, but that is totally uncalled for! I have no intentions of dressing like a "dumbass" as you so intelligently put it. I intend to wear regular cloths, probably slightly nice clothes (as I always do when I see a show) and Elphaba's hat! I was not asking if you, or anyone, thought I would look stupid, I just asked if the management or other Wicked attendees would get upset! Looking dumb and causing discord and discontent are entirely different things!
And apparently the general consensus is that, no, it's not a big deal; unless of course, you're a complete un-fun jerk who hates Wicked anyway... so, regardless, I'm wearing the hat, and if anyone attends either performance on August 15th in Chicago; I'll be the one wearing Elphaba's hat; well, the one that's not green anyway!
Austin

i did.

lol jk (actualy ive never seen full monty and if theres nudity i dont intend to)
anyway, bwaychild-- i can understand if you hate the show you think what we're talking about is stupid, but its pretty pointless to go into a forum thats obviously full of fans and post for the sole purpose of making others angry or feel bad.

wickedboy--there will probably be ppl, even those at the show, who think dressing up is over the top or stupid, but i think itd be fun, and fine as long as youre not disturbing ppl during the show.
if someone comes up to you and tells you its stupid, forget them...or slap them in the face and cackle (which would be extremely more entertaining...for me Smile )

have fun at the show
candydog

Yes! Guys can be witches too!!!!!!!!!

Wear the hat - it's not doing any harm. If you're going to do it though perhaps bring a friend who's in costume too. It'll make you feel a lot more comfortable wearing the hat to the theatre if people are staring.

Do you have a pic of the hat to show us?

Don't do it. It's tacky.

It's like a desperate cry for attention. People are there to see the show, not you.

I agree. Theatre used to be such a classy place...To me, wearing a witch hat to Wicked would be like dressing as Frankenstein for "Young Frakenstein" or wearing a big poofy old fashioned dress for Les Mis.
Carbucketty

First off, per the conversations at the end of page one ... you can disagree with someone on a forum without being abrasively rude about it. Tone it down, please.

No, actually, they're not equatable. This is just a hat.

They sell them as souvenirs:
http://www.broadwaynewyork.com/Item.aspx?ItemId=34350

Those are full costumes. A poofy dress would interfere with those sitting next to him--the hat put under his seat or folded on his lap, would not. This is more like wearing a knit crocheted cosette cap or a red french military vest when seeing les Mis.

Fan behavior? Yes.
Would he call attention to himself? Yes.
Over the top? Not really.

As long as you don't act like a fool during the show, (singing along, lip synching, squeeling, whistling, dancing in your seat, etc.) and don't block other audience member's enjoyment of the show, I don't see it as a problem.

In fact, I think it would be a great opportunity to dress up a bit for the theatre. He could wear a modern cut blazer with a lime green Wicked Tee or a green long sleeved shirt.

Meh...maybe it's because I was brought up on the lesson of: "Try to look a little nice when going to the theatre"

As in, khakis, a nice polo, not a witchces hat, etc.

Well, what would you suggest a teenage boy should wear to the theatre? 'Cause we're certainly not going to wear tuxes, unless it's opening or closing or something. Even then I probably wouldn't wear a tux, though.

Yeah exactly...summer is polo and khakis or something along those lines, winter is a sweater and maybe corduroys. I'm not a very classy person, but even I know it's just etiquette.

and besides...I dunno what Barbecue you're going to, but when I go to them I wear shorts and a t-shirt Very Happy

Attire- shoes that can be polished, casual dress pants or dress pants, dress shirt or a casual shirt that can pass for a dress shirt. Your mother would most likely jump ay the chance to get you stuff like that if you do not have them and do not have the money. Khaki and polo can attact comments eg. "nice of you to dress up."

The hats looks good and he should wear it.
TR_Wolf

My personal opinion is that I don't like it when people dress in costume for a show, APART from if it's The Rocky Horror Show.

My particular peeve is the young fangirls who dress up in accurate CATS costumes and wigs and make up, and dance about the lobby and auditorium and stuff before the show/during interval, I just find it annoying because people might think it's part of the show, or if they dont, then it spoils the initial surprise, and in my opinion, just looks a bit stupid.

As for wearing the Wicked hat... I dont really see the point unless you're trying to get attention, especially as the traditional pointed style witches hat is a female thing, it'd be like going to Les Mis in a woman's bonnet.

I guess I never quite understood the whole 'dressing like a character from the show you're about to see' thing that some fans do.
Quique

Very Happy
Eponine93

Well, I've done some fangirly stuff when I went to see Les Mis. I didn't feel like buying a $20 t-shirt, so instead I took my own $5 plain white t-shirt I'd had forever, my own $2 magic markers, wrote my favorite quotes on the shirt and then at the stage door, asked all the actors to sign it. I did it for several reasons... 1) to get an original souvenier from the show, 2) to save money, 3) to show my love for the show, 4) for the adrenaline rush of walking down the streets of NY with a shirt saying: "Remember, the truth that once was spoken: to love another person is to see the face of god" on it and 5) because I am an attention-whore, to get the actors to notice me. It was fun.

Wicked_boy, I would say go for it. It's fun without being too over-the-top, it won't annoy anyone.
Alonza0

Just wear the hat already. You obviously want to, so do it. Don't let anybody rain on your parade. And what's the beauty of a hat? You can take it off if people seemed miffed. But trust me, they won't be. Take it from someone who's seen Cats in a full Cats costume. (Snigger all you want people, I had the time of my life and got invited backstage to boot.) You'll get some nods, giggles, pointing and people asking you where you got it. And you'll feel better for having had the guts to wear it when you leave. And if you're really concerned, just call the theatre and ask about their policies on hats inside the theatre. If they give you the go ahead, then go ahead.

Quite frankly, if you feel comfortable, and then do it. Why not? People can make comments all they want, but so what? You flew to London to see Idina. Wear the stinkin' hat!

If you're looking for an alternative, try going to Cafepress.com or some place where there are custom T-shirts. You're a guy, so you could rock a cool shirt with Elphie's hat on it with a jacket and some slacks or nice jeans (guys can do so many cool things with clothes nowadays).

You know, when I saw 'Wicked', I wore a black and green blouse and black pointy shoes with green lining. It was a pure coincidence, but if I go back again before Julia leaves, I'm going to wear the exact same outfit in solidarity. Yes, it's not as obvious as wearing a hat, but I want to show my enthusiasm for my girl JM, who rocks the green like nobody's business.

Let us know how it turns out!

Edited for typos!
bwayobsessed

I think that's it fine, as long as you're not in full costume & you take off the hat for the performance. It's kinda the same thing as wearing a show t-shirt to the show. You're just showing you're love for the production. If people thinks it weird, that's their problem.
Luc

Guys, he has seen the show...
wickedandrentrock

I'd say definately go for it. i have the Grimmerie, and I was reading this one part where they say some people wore witches hats to some of the first shows, and the cast members thought it was really cool in a kind of nutty, obsessed fan sort of way. So have lots of fun!

Anyways, I was looking some information on Kendra and found this blurb about the show:

Quote:
...I also loved seeing some very enthusiastic audience members enter the theater in Elphaba hats, which I'm pretty sure they took off during the performance. But I did NOT love the Japanese tourist seated in front of me. Not only did he text message throughout the show, he appeared to be filming some of the performance!

Well everyone,
I saw the show Wednesday... twice, along with Behind the Emerald Curtain, and approved or not, tacky or not, I wore the hat to all three, and couldn't be happier I did! While I got many looks, understandably, many from several little girls, I got just as many comments, ALL of them positive. During Behind the Emerald Curtian, no one was more inquisive than Don Richard (Witch's Father and u/s Wizard) who expressed his amazement at how much it replicates the one in the show. I got several comments that people liked it, or "just loved" it, from a few. But I have to say, no one took a more ardent interest than Dee Roscioli herself. I met her at the stage door after the evening performance and she complimented how much it looked "just like" hers, with "even that little dot pattern" she asked me "Can I touch it?" and I just had to laugh, I instantly thought of the scene between Galinda and Madame Morrible concerning the Grimmerie, but of course assented, and she told me it even feels the same, and seemed a bit freaked out by that, and wanted to know where it'd come from! I have to say, despite all the bickering I seem to have caused (sorry about that people!) I feel rather vendicated when Elphaba herself gives me a total thumbs up on the hat. Oh, and Erin Mackey said it was "Very cool" too!
Just so everyone knows, the hat was stowed under my seat during each performance!
Here are picks of me with both of them! (I thought to ask for one with both of them together, but it didn't come out of my mouth fast enough!)

Gotta say I love that Dee is wearing green...

...and Erin is wearing pink!
