We just finished Godspell and need help!

We finished Godspell with outstanding results, but unfortunately, the two guys who played Jesus and Jon the Baptist/Judas were seniors! We only have 2 boys with singing voices enough to carry solo parts for next year's musical left in the music program! Anyone have any ideas for musicals with few male roles that I could recommend to my director? She's debating cancelling musicals indefinately!

Aida really only has 3 solo male parts... if the rights are out...

In Bye, Bye Birdie, Albert and Conrad are the only males that actually have to sing solo... I mean, Mr. MacAfee does, but it can be mostly spoken and sound fine.
Oh, and Harvey Johnson, but his voice is supposed to be changing anyway Smile

In Evita, only Che, Peron and Magaldi have to sing solo. But I suppose Magaldi isn't supposed to be FABULOUS...

Only Harold Hill and Marcellus sing completely solo in The Music Man, but you must have 4 boys who can sing nicely in barbershop quartet harmony.
And you have to have a cute little kid for Winthrop, but I don't know if you'll use an elementary-school kid like we always do.

I'm thinking Bye Bye Birdie is your best bet. Really cute show and can probably be done pretty well under your circumstances. I take it you have quite a few more talented girls than boys, and for Bye Bye Birdie, that's not a bad thing! Very Happy

Hope that helps!

I do NOT suggest Aida or Evita for high schools. Bye Bye Birdie would be a good choice. Maybe the Sound of Music.

I have to disagree with you about Evita. I've seen several highschools do Evita extremely well, despite the sexual references and difficult vocals...
but I wouldn't know about Aida, as I've never seen a highschool do it. My friend's school is seriously considering doing it, though.

But I agree that Bye Bye Birdie is a good choice, and The Sound Of Music if you have access to talented/obedient children Laughing

The only males in The Sound Of Music who have solos are The Captain, Uncle Max and Rolf. Uncle Max's solos can be semi-spoken, I believe.

Kurt and Friedrich will need to sing well, too, but it would be difficult for highschoolers to play these parts unless they looked VERY young... elementary-school kids have been used in every high-school (or professional, for that matter) production of The Sound Of Music I've ever seen.

The Apple Tree
Little Mary Sunshine
The Fantasticks (Make the fathers mothers. I've seen it done.)

When my high school did Sound of Music, we had local elementary students play all the kids, except for Fredrich and Liesl, who were played by high school students.

I've seen a very successful high school production of Aida, but the school is known for it's productions and has a director who is very well-known within the high school theater circuits. I think you should remind your director that you will also have new students coming in that could be very good. I'm going to second Bye Bye Birdie.

Your scenario is nearly the same as mine - except I'm the director having to pick a show for next year, and I'll still have my Jesus.

I'm thinking of doing The Wiz.

Varied, strong female roles, and the the scarecrow could be female. That just leaves me with The Wiz, the lion, and the tinman.
