My favorite is At War With The Army (which isn't really a war movie at all), but that's only because I'm obsessed with Jerry Lewis. I guess there's also Black Hawk Down. Does Forrest Gump count?

I favor the comedies:

Catch 22 (Alan Arkin)
Duck Soup (Marx Bros)
The Mouse that Roared (Peter Sellers x3)
Dr. Strangelove (Peter Sellers x3)
Quique

Casualties Of War

How I Won The War- Michael Crawford. (one of the funniest war comedies ever).

Oh What a lovely War- great british comedy.

One caveat about How I Won the War - It's now emotionally painful for Beatles fans to watch because of the ending.

War Movies

I'm not a big fan of war movies; I prefer movies that are set against the backdrop of wars but that don't necessarily deal with the war itself. But here's a list anyway:

Apocalypse Now is fantastic but absolutely harrowing. I've only watched it twice and I'm still not ready to revisit it again.
From Here to Eternity. Mongomery Clift's performance is just phenomenal. The scene where he plays that trumpet near the end is just something that stays with you forever.
South Pacific. No, it's not perfect, but it's a lot better than you remember it. I enjoyed seeing it again. On stage, it's a great score married to a fantastic book. The screenplay's structuring hurts the film a little, but it's still a super piece of writing in terms of characterisation, dialogue and how it distills its themes into the narrative.
Gone With the Wind. Yes, it's a complete soap opera that uses the Civil War as a background - but it's still one of the finest films ever made. Thrilling performances, fantastic chemistry between the principle players and just so engrossing.
The Diary of Anne Frank. I feel I should mention this. Millie Perkins is not ideally cast as Anne, but the the film captures so well what the claustrophobia of their living situation must have been in hiding and has an excellent cast in the supporting roles. It's always been a story that has fascinated me.
■ I know parts of it are tacky and I know it's too long, but I love For the Boys. It's a sentimental favourite. I enjoy how it tracks the relationship of the main characters by moving from war to war. If ever there was a movie I'd like to see adapted with an original score for the stage, this is it.

I'm certain there are more war-related films that I could mention here. Off the top of my head, I can think of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, but that's for a list of my least favourites and I would never get a copy for my personal DVD collection.

Someone who's never heard of this movie wouldn't know what invasion you meant. (Normandy)
