Vocal Help for FredI was cast as Fred in my school's production of OUAM around a month ago. We have a new choral director at our school, and so she's been working mostly with the chorus of the show. Recently, I had my first vocal practice with her and found out something distressing. I have been listening to the revival CD for the past six months and learning the songs that way; it turns out that the licensed version is a half step higher. That half step brings the songs out of my belting range. I'm terrified because I don't know what to do now; I need to relearn the songs (especially "Shy") in a completely different voice. My head voice is not as strong as I'd like it to be (I'm a very, VERY low alto), but that's what I need to use for the songs. Are there any warm ups or exercises I can do to strengthen my upper range? I'm desperate.

I'm sorry, I can't help you, but I do hear you! I was cast as Fred and learned the songs via the broadway revival album. Of course, we start rehearsing and it's all different. That seems to really screw people up!
They cast me even though I have zero training in singing. Heh, I guess they figured they could teach me from scratch.

We fixed things up by moving "Shy" down a step. It's absolutely peachy now.
