Views on "Character" Voices

I'm auditioning for Into the Woods soon and angling for the part of the Witch. I'm undecided, however, as to whether or not I should use a more crone-ish speaking voice in the first act, then speak normally after the transformation. In productions you've been in or seen, did the Witch normally use a character-y voice while old? If so, how effective was it, and did you like it? I'm really trying to cover all my bases here -- "If you know what you want, then you go and you find it and you get it." Any and all replies would be greatly appreciated.

Also posted this in the ITW forum, but there's not much action there.

I wouldn't do any character voice for the audition unless you are asked. After you get the part then you could ask your director's opinion.

In the one I just saw, she switched between them. Some of the songs were in the crone voice, like the bit about the beans, and others were sung normally which was quite effective. So I'd say sing normally because that's what her big bits are.
