UrinetownSo, I've recently gotten on a Urinetown kick....and I must say, it's wonderful. What about Urinetown do you love? Or not love? |

Urinetown
I think the thing I love most about Urinetown is the meta-textual commentary about the show as a work of musical theatre and about musical theatre in general. Also, I think that the songs in are really sharp and immensely witty. Later days David |

Heh. "Nothing ruins a show faster than too much exposition."
I just directed a show with too much exposition. About 6 pages straight in Act I Scene 1. Gag. But Urinetown is great. I love the variety of musical styles that are thrown in. And the end. It's really funny to see reality winning out over the stereotypical happy ending. |

What I dont love? Well I'm in it as cladwell at the moment. Somehow it bothers me that the cooler characters dont sing pretty stuff. I know its really stupid, but yeah...I see Lockstock and Cladwell as way cooler than bobby, but bobby is the only one who really has melodious music. It all comes back to the fact that I fear people think I suck at singing I think. I should get over that. I'm also really frustrated with the acting, as so far the director hasnt given me much advice, whereas she will have hope reread some lines 20 times before going on just to make sure shes doing it right.
However, I love the openness of the musical, the recognition that it's a musical. I also love the whole: Barrel: And I love you. Lockstock: ...*exits* Barrel: Well that went well! *Barrel gets jumped by the poor and dies*. ~The Lone Wanderer |

I love the references to all the other shows.
People who don't get it ( and their were a number when I saw the tour) probably REALLY don't get it because they don't understand what is being spoofed. |

That was weird. That's my post listed as "guest".
I thought it was funny I was not asked to log in. Is that something new? |

Mmm...I really love that score. I'm playing Trombone in the pit for my HS's production, and it's like some of the most fun music I've ever played. It's some of the wittiest lyric work of the last 15-20 years at least.

Oh I know, I absolutely love the music already and I've only heard a couple of songs! I've got an audition for this show in January....and so I'm trying to find out as much as possible about it.
Question: How should Hope be played? I mean, I know she's a soprano which is good because I am too, but what is her personality like? And is there any certain way she should look? |

Audition advice...
It's good that you're tyring to find out as much as possible. But I'm going to give you the same advice I gave to someone over at the Rodgers and Hammer-Hart forum: do some more research about Urinetown and then make your own, intelligent, choices. "Hope" doesn't exist as some kind of unrealised potential character. Yes, there are given things that make up the character - that's what you get from the script and the score - but a character is always going to be filtered through the actor who plays the role. No two actors are going to interpret a character in exactly the same way and you should find your own unique connection to the character. That's why watching different productions of one show becomes interesting, particularly when it comes to very complex roles like Hamlet, Richard III or Rose. So - read the script, listen to all the songs on the cast recording or take a look at the vocal selections. And good luck for the audition. Later days David |

I love the references to economics and such ["Hail Malthus!"]. |

so i really wanna direct this at my theatre: we have the perfect space and the audience would liek it. However, the board that I have to go through wont even get a perusal because of the name of the show. ugh!

hmmm..you are playing cladwell and dont think "Dont be the bunny" is melodious?? its the catchiest and finest song in the score. and why in god's name didnt John Cullum win best actor? I adore Lithgow but Sweet Smell of Success was crap. |
||||
| piscesmoni |
Sadly, that's true. It's such a turnoff if you have no previous knowledge of the show, but that's part of the beauty of the show. |

I absolutely love Urinetown...but its such a difficult task trying to convince others that its worth listening to! I think its the title that turns them off, because it really does suggest "toilet humour", when actually the show is incredibly intelligent and witty.
A small part of my heart lives in constant agony because Urinetown lost to Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Tonys. Such a dark, dark day in theatre history. |

Urinetown is one of the most brilliant things I've ever listened to. I hope to audition this summer for a professional production out of it, and although I'm 16, I'm young, a tenor, and I look kinda like Hunter Foster. I definetely wanted to see the show to see visual gags and the book. I haven't seen John Cullum's face, but when I listen I just think, "This guy is the man." It's the small-cast musicals that many people, including me, gravitate towards. First Urinetown, then Avenue Q, now 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

AHHH!
I made Urinetown for our State Thespian Festival! I'm playing Josephine/Old Woman! I'm excited. |

I fully agree. Don't Be The Bunny is easily the show's standout song. It's catchy, clever, funny. It will be the song people will hum when they leave the theatre. Also, Lockstock and Barrel get Cop Song- which is a great song, technically. I love the second portion of it. |

culluym's face is right in the cd. plus you must have seen him in 1776, on northern exposure or e/r. along with the cast recording pics of on a clear day,shenendoah,on the 20th century and camelot? |

The first time my mother heard me listening to urinetown she was humming along and kinda enjoying it, and finally she was like so what are you listening to and I was like Urinetown, and she was all how did I raise you to listen to such garbage? Other people's responses to it when I ask if they want a copy: Why would I want to listen to music about urine? That's gross? You are so messed up Glenn etc.... *sigh* some people are so lame Anyways, Urinetown is by far one of the best musical production of our time in my opinion. The book is amazing, the lyrics are witty and fun. Oh and the story line's great too! Who doesn't love a socio-economic satire? |

so I make a s/n specifically to post in this thread and then I posted as a "Guest" wow I can be silly at times, lol

Which is funny, considering they make fun of that very thing in the first 5 minutes! With proper marketing, it can be very successful! The show that Newsweek called..."Better the The Producers!"

I saw Urinetown yesterday (for the first time) and it was honestly the most fun I have ever had at the theatre. The thing I loved most was how Officer Lockstock kept talking to the audience, and talking to Little Sally about the show. My favourite part was the end of Act I, where everyone was going in slow motion and Officer Lockstock made the comment that they would never catch the rebels because everyone was going so slow. I loved it! Though I didn't neccesarily pick up on all the references. I caught the Les Mis one, and the West Side Story one, and that's all I was really sure about. Oh well, guess I'll have to go see it again one of these days.

Urg. Urinetown caused me to fail a history test yesterday. Great... It was about all the political ideologies (communism, socialism, etc) and I completely failed the "compare and contrast communism and socialism." I really did used to know this stuff, but because I've been listening to Urinerown so much, the only thing I could think of was Cladwell's line in Act One Finale- "You are wrong, Mister Strong, you and your socialistic throng." So I somehow got it in my head that the Rebel Poor were socialists, and UGC were communists, and that's what I based my paragraph on. I checked later, and I was right a few points, but waaaay off on some.

I thought the show was great, I saw it on the tour and I hadn't know much about it before, and I was amazed at the incredible wit, and varity of music styles. I cannot waiot until MTI releases rights to the show becasue my community theatre has commited to do the show when it is releases unfortunatly it probably wont be for a while.

Well now, then I'll have to bring that to their attention, I was unaware of that. Thanks though. |

I love Urinetown. I've seen it twice and it is amazing. I want to play Little Sally someday. She is totally the best part. Of the girls anyways. Lockstock would be amazing if I was a guy.

Eeeee.
This musical makes me happy. I get to play Joesphine Strong/Old Ma Strong this summer, and there's a HUGE chance that we're taking it to ITF. |

Wow, I saw it today at a high school. Very, very good show. But a quick question. In the show, there were two staircases, and whenever someone made an entrance, everyone turned their heads dramatically and said, "Whaaaaaaaa?!!" Were those in the script or just placed in there?
And who exactly dies? We know Bobby does on stage, and Cladwell does off, and Hope eventually does, but Barrel, the Senator, and his girl too? |
||||
| The Very Angry Woman |
They did that on the US national tour, on Broadway, at CanStage, and in Berlin, so I assume it's scripted. But it was generally NOT done at every single entrance.
They don't specify. Don't forget Old Man Strong dies, too. |
||||
| Mimi Marquez |
I was wondering the same thing after I saw it the first time, then I saw it again and they did the same thing. I thought it was funny, lol. |
||||
| Holly |
There are probably something between three and five scripted 'Whaaaaaa?!'s...our director added in a bunch though. People who die...Bobby, Cladwell, Fipp, Mrs. Millenium, Old Man Strong, and then there's the character who pees at the same time as Old Man Strong, but I'm not sure if he actually does die. Ahh, I love this show. "He's the hero of the show, she has to love him!" I wish I could actually be in it, though - I'm on crew running spotlight. Hopefully I'll have another chance to audition at some point. I'd love to be Little Sally. |

hahahai think that this show is absolutely hilarious! We wanted to do it for our spring show so badly... but the administrations wouldnt go for it. They "couldn't picture it on the sign outside." Mahh.. we're doing children of eden instead...I LOVE: "For instance, a little boy once asked me if Urintown is actually a nice place to live. Gingerbread houses along golden frothy canals, like Venice. Only different. I didn't say yes. I didn't say no either." and: "I'm frightened." "As well you should be; freedom is scary. Its a blast of cool wind that burns your face to wake you up." "Literally?!" "Yes." I laugh every time. |

One of the theatres near me wanted to do it next year, but the board didn't think a show with Urine in the title would attact the older folks like Oklahoma did...then again they did do Best little Whorehouse in Texas and people came. I for one could see false advertising help out, i.e. advertise the show as You're in Town...and then when they come into the theatre...yeah, giant sign: Urinetown, t'would be awesome
| ShadowInTheWings |
For the longest time, I thought the title was a play on You're In Town (obviously that was before I saw it). |
