Urinetown as a movie musical? After talking with Salome about it, I think Urinetown would be a great, not to mention popular, movie musical.
What would the ideal cast be? Some people would be cast obviously for their singing, but you'd need a lot of comedic actors, especially deadpans, for some of the less vocally demanding roles...
Bobby Strong: Jake Gyllenhall (he can sing- look for his "And I Am Telling You")
Hope Cladwell: Kristin Bell
Pennywise: Ana Gasteyer
Lockstock: Will Ferrell
Barrel: Rainn Wilson
Cladwell: John Cullum, Ray Wise, Christopher Walken (since he seems to call Dibs on every movie musical these days)
Old Man Strong: Steve Carell

You have to convince me on how this would work on film.

We might as well just post a thread for every "____ musical as a movie" because there have been so many posted.
no disrespect to you
but i agree with Laurel.

Pennywise - Laurel
Cladwell - Jeff Goldblum
How's that for you?
I was thinking about this the other day actually.

I agree it might be difficult to make into a film...
But it'd be hilarious with the cast you listed

Ellen Page - Little Sally

After seeing Ellen Page on SNL, I have no faith in her for actual comedy.

I think as a film it would make as much sense as a stage musical, especially given that right now, there's a trend towards self-referential smart-guy comedy with characters who break the fourth wall and speak directly to the camera.

Are we looking at a new re-written adaptation for the screen? Because as it is now, I think Urinetown is very stagey, especially with all the poking fun at theatre in general.

Monsieur D'Arque

I also just considered the possibility of Alec Baldwin as Cladwell, and was rather amused.
|
Monsieur D'Arque

Yeah. Of course it would have to be adapted a little bit. But I think they could have a lot of fun with the conventions of movie musicals and film in general.
I'm picturing a sequence for Run Freedom Run in which everyone is carried away with the gospel fervor and begins clapping and dancing, even the camera crew, abruptly cutting off the music when a boom mic drops into the scene and hits one of The Poor.

Yeah, I could see that. I think it would make an interesting film, and I agree, I think it would be a wildly popular movie musical.

I vote for this casting.
But really, I think Goldblum would make an interesting and smarmy Cladwell.

Neil Patrick Harris should be Bobby.

Ah I'm all for the OBC. Hunter for Bobby!
This has nothing to do with the fact that I've been obsessed with him since I was eleven... <.< >.> <.<

Why not Kristen Bell?
She's AMAZING.

I've actually wanted this to happen since I first saw the show. I think with its self-deprecating winking-at-the-audience style it would be brilliant.

So true.
The Page-craze is rather unfounded, in my opinion...
I like all the original casting that was mentioned, but I think Barrell should be someone else. Like someone from the OBC.
And I think Little Sally should be played by someone who's at least in their twenties just for the heck of it. (I feel like any female SNL vet could tackle the role without making me cringe.)

And this is one of the reasons why the 2005 film version of "The Producers" did so poorly: "Producers" (and I would imagine "Urinetown" as well; I don't know much about it) was tailor-made for the stage. There's just some musicals that should be left solely for the stage.

Salome

John Cullum is the ONLY one who should play Cladwell on film.
Neil Harris is too old for Bobby strong
Steve Carrell too young for old man strong.

I just don't see her as Hope in my head...I'd have to see her actually playing the role.

Rewrites would, of course, be necessary, but the nudge nudge wink wink humor could still work.
Molly Shannon or Kristin Wiig would be a good Little Sally.
After thinking about the Run Freedom Run ideas, I've come to the conclusion that the more ridiculous the number is in this case, the better. There should be a bouncing Bobby-head and the lyrics to the chorus parts like a singalong film, random cameos just for the song, etc.

As Veronica Mars, she played a bunch of variations of "ditz" while in disguise that really helped me see it.
I'll try to remember a specific episode to point you towards to help. (Though, of course, she won't be singing in it.... hmmm...)

Bell was a wonderful Mary Lane in Reefer Madness, both on film and in the off-Broadway performance.
And Salome, I thought part of the Old Man Strong joke was that, just like Little Sally, people see him as a doddering old man when he's really not that old at all. Hm.
|
lesmisloony

| Quote: | | Ellen Page is in her 20s... |
And utterly fail at comedy.
She's a good actor (Smart People reassured me a little) but everything she does is in a rather similar vein. If you'd seen her on SNL, you'd know what I mean. Her Miley Cyrus impression especially and the sketch where she turned lesbian at a concert were just... off, somehow.

W-w-w-w-wWHATTTTTT?!?!
Kristen Bell is godly. Don't mess.
And John Cullum is too old to play Cladwell.
And while Jake Gyll can sing, he can't sing Bobby Strong. Definitely not.
|
Salome
|
Cullum is NOT too old he did it 6 years ago in the original. if you deprive Cullum of the role in the film it would be like depriving Harrsion of Higgins or Preston of Harold Hill.

I think the template for this film should be the Reefer Madness film- both a near-perfect movie musical and a brilliant parody of movie musical conventions. The parody of Nineties generic animated musicals (Cats Don't Dance, Pebble and the Penguin, FernGully) is truly priceless.
|
Salome
|
Reefer Maddness was great but Urinetown is more brechtain and intellectual than Reefer Maddness.

Pebble and the Penguin! I'd forgotten about that movie... and now I think I should rent it.

Amy Poehler as Little Sally would be hilarious.

I can't see Urinetown in a move form at all. It would ruin it.
That said, I think Amy Adams would make a wonderful Hope in general.

My cast:
Neil Patrick Harris - Bobby
Amy Adams - Hope
Christopher Walken - Cladwell
Will Arnett - Officer Lockstock
Ellen Page - Little Sally
Steve Carrell - Old Man Strong
Martin Short - Mr. McQueen
Robin Williams - Hot Blades Harry
Jason Alexander - Officer Barrel
Andrea Martin - Pennywise
Fred Thompson - Senator Fipp
|
Salome
|
Thompson is a right wing fanatic he wouldnt be in a good liberal show like Urinetown.
|
Monsieur D'Arque
|
Except for the ending, which ironically reverses the premise and shows that the people CAN'T manage themselves without an oppressive Big Brother... though it's more an Ayn-Randian joke at that point than anything else.
What about Darrell Hammond as Fipp?
|
Trevor reincarnate
|
Fred Thompson is also an ACTOR. Which means he could play it if he wanted.
So hush.
I just think it would be funny to see a real politician playing a politician in a show like Urinetown.
|
Salome
|
IF he wanted. but I doubt he would. he is so right wing he makes Mussolini look liberal.
|
Monsieur D'Arque

Nowadays all politicians feel the need to mock their image in comedy, especially the conservatives because the want to look like they can loosen up. So Thompson probably would.

I wanted to say this all along, but I didn't want to look like I only knew SNL actors... but I fully, thoroughly agree with this casting. After seeing all the characters Poehler pulls off on SNL--doesn't she even play a neurotic little girl?--I think she'd rock it.
AND!

He is an absolute genius!

I was JUST going to say, AMY POEHLER FOR LITTLE SALLY.
She'd be brilliant. Gah!!!
Leslie Mann would be great too.
She's a smidgen too old now (wow, it pains me to say!), but Alyssa Milano as Hope?
|
LaurelDP
|
I think I'd get a little irritated at Poehler as Little Sally. I love Poehler, but she gets a little much for me sometimes.
The more I think about it, I think Amy Sedaris would be hysterical as Sally.
Poehler would be a hilarious Little Becky Two Shoes. I think she could play preggo and crippled.
|
shakalakababy

actually yeah i second that. Poehler would make a much better becky two shoes.
I'm not sure who i'd want for sally...
