Unpopular opinions you holdWhat are they?I'll go first I actually like "Cats" quite a bit. Frances Ruffelle is a God Ruthie Henshall is totally overrated "Spelling Bee" did nothing for me. I only liked it on the "adults only" night. "The Producers" was one of the worst musicals I ever saw "West Side Story" bores me to tears!! |
||||||
| flying_pigs |
I like most of the songs in Wicked and am looking forward to it coming to London, I also like Frances Ruffelle and is probably my favourite Eponine.
EDIT: I can't stand CATS and very much enjoy Phantom of the Opera |

I really do think Rent is one of the best musicals ever written.
I also think Tick, Tick Boom! is an amazing musical. I like Godspell. |
||||||
| Salome |
Although not a Webber fan I adore Aspects of Love and Sunset Blvd.
Vanessa Williams and Howard McGillin were far superior to Chita Rivera and Brent Carver in "Spider Woman" Audra should have been Julie and Not Carrie in "Carousel" |
||||||
| mizzie |
I love Godspell!
Frances Ruffelle has a really neat sound. I enjoy many of the works of ALW. I like many of the songs from Wicked. |
||||||

I Loved "We Will Rock You" when it opened - but think it's deteriorated and is absolutely dire now. Means most WWRY fans hate me, and most non-WWRY fans disagree with me too.
I consider commercial appeal to be a valid measure of worth for shows. Loong-runners like Cats and Starlight Express have got something special and valuable, the fact they have run for so long means they ARE good. There are many aspects of what makes a show good, but I truly believe commercial appeal IS one of those aspects. I think "Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens" is the best show in london right now! |
||||||
| Sairin |
I enjoyed We Will Rock You - though the secret is to have a large bag of chocolate/sweets and munch your way through all the dialogue.
I like a lot of ALW shows. There are quite a few Sondheim shows that I just can't get on with. I once dressed up as Javert from Les Mis and thought it was kinda funny. Though to be fair, it was Halloween and we didn't go to the show. (Instead we went clubbing, which I've learned is not a good thing to do in an overcoat.) |

Frances Ruffelle is my favorite I love Frank Wildhorn's music. My favorite show of his is Dracula. I'm a Tanz Der Vampire fan (which isn't unpopular in itself) but I don't hate Dance of The Vampires. I think it's nowhere near as good as Tanz, but I had fun with it. I HATE HATE HATE Sarah Brightman. I think Andrew Lloyd Webber is a pretty darn decent composer, and I love Starlight Express and Whistle Down The Wind. My favorite composer isn't Sondheim (Which is not in any way to say I don't like him. I like everything of his I've heard. There are just other composers that I prefer). I think that "Children of Eden" is the best piece that Schwartz has written. The prospect of "Lestat: The Musical" excites me greatly. Chi |

Love to CATS, Sunset Boulevard, Evita, and a few other ALW shows.
I hate Moulin Rouge. I like Liza Minelli. EDIT: I really really REALLY do not like Jesus Christ Superstar. I find it terribly boring. |
||||||
| Descartes |
I like ALW's earlier works.
I enjoyed Crawford when I first heard him. Not so much now. Wicked is okay. Not horrible, not good. I enjoy Rent, but I find Boho Days from the TTB recording to be BAAAAD. I can't get into Cats. *walks out of the eConfessional* Des. |

I hate Pacific Overtures. I just can't get into it.
| MrsJamieWellerstein |
I like the show. I hate the title. |
||||||
| LoneWanderer |
Hmmm, I've got a lot I think.
First off I like Children of Eden, an opinion that has lead to Salome threatening my life on occassion. I like Wildhorn too, and really want to try and find a recording of Dracula (no luck so far I can actually enjoy listening to the wicked cast recording in certain moods. I don't really think its great at all, but I've gotten in the mood before (and I get a feeling I might enjoy seeing the show live quite a bit). I like Phantom of the Opera, it's my guilty pleasure musical. I reckognize that it isn't really the greatest, but I had a blast seeing it. I don't listen to my Sondheim recordings all that much. I do like the shows, but somehow listening to sweeney while doing my math homework never seemed enjoyable. ~The Lone Wanderer |
||||||

You know, if anyone wants recordings of Dracula, I'm the girl to PM. I've even got a couple of extra and completely legal copies of the 3 track demos which were distributed through Dodger stages... Just putting that offer out there. Chi |

I hate JCS.
I hate Fiddler on the Roof I enjoy Wicked quite a bit. (WAS a mega-huge fan when it came out, but the phase has subsided. All the fangirl hype has ruined it for me) I do love Idina. I love Lea Salonga's Eponine I loved Little Women I can't stand Michael Crawford (I guess that isn't too unpopular a sentiment) I do enjoy quite a lot of ALW. (Evita, Song and Dance, some of Sunset Boulevard, and one or two POTO songs) Annie |
||||||

I don't particularly like Nathan Lane.
I like The Sound of Music. |

The only serious issue I have with Wicked is the hype surrounding it.

I liked the Phantom movie more than I liked the stage version
| Imy |
Yes! I have the Vanessa recording and I love it. I've heard most of the Chita recording and I was not really that impressed. Though I must admit that my favorite arrangement of the title song is the one from "And the World Goes 'Round." But maybe it's just because I get to hang out on that high G# for a while. |
||||||
| Beagle On Stage |
"Les Mis" is okay, but it's not even in the top 10.
"The Lion King" is a terrible movie and an even worse stage show. Patti rocks. Colm sucks. Even though it was progressive at the time, "Oklahoma" is pretty bad now and doesn't deserve the praise it gets. |
||||||
| AngMisto8182 |
I liked the Phantom of the Opera movie.
I also liked the RENT movie. A lot. I don't know how many people on here thought it was horrible or if anyone actually does, but yeah. I really like Lea Salonga's Eponine. I like a lot of ALW's stuff. I like CATS, too. Not as much as I used to, but still! |
||||||
| JemiBoe1981 |
I loved the RENT movie.
Frances Ruffelle is the best Eponine ever. Natasha Richardson isn't a very good Sally. CATS is amazing. ALW is fine. |
||||||
| Beagle On Stage |
Nothing has to be belted. It's a good device sometimes, but it's never necessary.
| dramaqueen220222 |
Same here. It's not a bad show...but I feel it doesn't deserve all the credit it gets. |
||||||
| AngMisto8182 |
Ooh. I'll second that opinion. |

I dislike Uma Thurman's singing voice. I do however, love Uma Thurman.
| wicked_diva |
-I like Wicked. The only thing I don't like about it is the insane hype and the ending.
-Based on the cast recording, I dislike Avenue Q. It's far too crude. -I love Little Women. The music is wonderful, and it is my second favorite musical I've ever seen, beat only by Les Mis. It was/is wonderful. -I enjoyed Lion King when I saw it in LA. It's also my second favorite Disney movie, after Beauty and the Beast -I like both Jekyll and Hyde and Scarlet Pimpernel. I really really hope to get into Jekyll and Hyde for the spring. -I thought the Phantom movie, other than Emmy Rossum's expression, and the fact that like all the voices were worse than the OBC. But it was still a good movie. I also liked the Rent movie. -I hate the movies for both Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire. They lost the fact that those movies were supposed to be movies of the freaking books, not just "cinematic experiences." -I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I hate every "dream ballet" ever written. They are, in my mind, the worst musical theatre devices in existance. |

HATE CATS, OKLAHOMA!, RENT, WEST SIDE STORY!!!!!
Love Les Miserables, Phantom - could listen to them for the rest of my life Starlight, Sunset Blvd are alright. Absoultley Love Colm's and Phil Quast's voice - Best VJ/Javert ever! Love (ooh I've forgotten his name!) - Javert from OLC Lion King movie and Stage was absolutely fantastic Most of ALW's works Love John Owen-Jones. Hate Hate Chess! (did it at school to my much dissatisfaction) Thought Crawford was an unusual choice (having done 'Some Mother's Do 'Ave Em') for Phantom, although I found him a fantastically powerful and excellent singer for the role. |
||||||
| LaurelDP |
I can watch the CATS DVD for hours, just because it's pretty.
I liked the Rent movie. I really dislike Les Mis and POTO. And basically any musical based solely on drama. I hate when musicals aren't charming or funny or whimsy. I kind of like Wicked. |
||||||
| Caitlin (Pipes) |
Not so much musically related, but I'm a practicing Catholic and a Republican. Those are basically two bad words on this site, lol.
| Kragey |
I love CATS and Les Mis.
Speaking of Les Mis, the barricade boys were definitely having massive orgies when the audience wasn't watching. And Colm is overrated. I don't quite like Beauty and the Beast, except for a few songs and characters.
Woah, that's an unpopular opinion? Not only is he the only Valjean I ever loved, but I thought a lot of other people adored him as well. |
||||||
| Fontinau |
These might be more "controversial" than strictly "unpopular". But whatever. Here're ten:
1. If it was a good book or movie, odds are it's going to make a s___ty stage musical. 2. If it was a good stage musical, odds are it's going to make a s___ty movie. 3. Good actors are one of the most expendable commodities in the world. 4. Beauty and the Beast is the best musical of the last 15 years. (The movie version. The stage version sucks.) 5. Glory notes are one of the most disgustingly annoying inventions ever devised by human kind, and singers who don't take them are my heroes. 6. If you tell me you're a musical theater fan, and I ask you to name all your favorite songs, and you do, and 90% of them were written after 1980, then you = dumbass. 7. We're way overdue for a hip hop musical. (Though I guess Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk almost counts.) 8. Great actors are one of the rarest commodities in the world. 9. Michael John LaChiusa, Adam Guettel, and their ilk have more good taste than talent, and wherever they think they're leading musical theater, it's a creative and commercial dead end. 10. Not only is this snowflake motif kitschy, but it's making my sig look downright considerate to people with low bandwidth. |
||||||

I like CATS. I think Wicked isn't that bad a musical.
I hate JCS. I hate The Sound Of Music and I hate (and will remain to do so until the hour of my death) Phantom of the Opera. |

I hate Andrew Lloyd Weber, and don't understand why anyone likes any of his work.

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "Glory notes?"
| Wanksta757 |
Hmm, quite a few for me....
1. I like a good deal of the music from WICKED (I don't like "Something Bad", "Dancing Through Life", "Sentimental Man", or "Thank Goodness"). 2. I really like the music from Jesus Christ Superstar. But, when you put it all together and try to sit through it... it's sooo boring. 3. RENT = Love 4. I like Moulin Rouge. A Lot. But, I hate Ewan McGregor's voice. A Lot. 5. I think South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is the most genious musical of the past decade. 6. Disney makes the best musicals. 7. Idina is adorable. 8. CATS is a wonderfully, fantastic concept. But, the show is FAR too overrated. 9. I think Cabaret iS B-O-R-I-N-G. But, I like the music. 10. Seussical is slightly underrated. 11. So is The Wild Party (Lippa). 12. I always skip over "Sing!" while listening to A Chorus Line. 13. I like Saturday Night Fever. 14. More community theaters should perform Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? 15. There needs to be more Christmas musicals. I'm done. -Matt |

Yeah, being a Catholic is not very popular, is it. I'm starting up a Catholic gang, though, because I think we need a tougher image. You wanna join? We're gonna get communion wafers tattoed on our chest and our gang hand symbol is gonna be a cross made out of 2 index fingers. There was more to this Catholic gang idea two nights ago when I made it up at a wine and cheese party... after too much wine and not enough cheese... |

"...I love him, but every day I'm learning, all my life, I've only been preTEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNding..." Those stupid high notes that serve no purpose other than showing off how gloriously high a singer can belt - and in fact usually screw up the melody of the song. They're bad enough when they're written into the score. But when some asshole singer throws one in where there isn't even one written, I just want to rip his/her lungs out. |
||||||
| olly |
Yeah, sorry lol. By the time I got to the end saying about the things I love, I just had to mention JOJ, although I do obviously know that everyone loves his Valjean and Phantom! |
||||||
| MaryMag |
How do you feel about Eliza Doolittle changing the G at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night" to a D? Is it just high belt glory notes you dislike? Would you mind it if it occurred in a more classically sung musical? |
||||||
| Kragey |
For the past couple of years, "Masquerade" has been the only PotO song I've actually enjoyed...so I get weepy when people mention JOJ playing the Phantom. And as for the glory note, only two people have done the "On My Own" one without me cringing: Sutton Foster and Kaho Shimada. |

LOL, I love it. Count me in. Well, Des, Salome has told me that I'm one of few Republicans she actually likes, lol. I'm not one of those right wing extremists, and I don't care for George W. Bush. I'm actually quite open-minded and moderate. As for being Catholic, I don't dwell on all of the teachings of the church, and I actually feel a lot of them have been so misinterpreted and twisted out of proportion that gives us a very bad rep. I promise I'm not that bad, lol. |
||||||
| Fontinau |
My problem isn't whether the high notes are belted or not. My problem is (1) that the high notes aren't there for any reason other than showing off the singer's range. This is supposed to be musical theater, not the Voice Olympics - a singer's natural range and technical training should be subordinate to the melody and to the drama. Not vise vera. and (2) that out-of-place high notes often hurt an otherwise good song. For example, changing the end of "Gethsemane" to a high C is disastrous, both because it mangles the melody, and because the presence of note so high above Jesus's tessitura implies that Jesus is in an intense and active state of mind, when actually at that point in the song he's supposed to have worked himself into a resigned state of mind. Changing the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night" to a D doesn't do much damage to the song, but it's still obnoxious. |

I'm so in.
This deserves its own thread. There's a very fine line between using song to replace dialogue - and tell the story in a more "efficient" way, like, say, "New Music" in Ragtime - and using a song to expose a character (or plot or something else, but usually character) in a way that you couldn't do otherwise - like in, say, "Someone to watch over me". I like both of those, but the problem is when songs just make one, blaring statement, and do so for 5 minutes without going anywhere. That's the reason that I hold my most unpopular opinion - which is that "Gypsy" sucks. Also really don't see what's so great about "Songs for a New World". Some of it's pretty, and there are a couple of stonking songs, but there's a hell of a lot of indulgence. I like the jukebox musical concept - I loved Mamma Mia, and though I think plenty of other jukebox musicals have been crappy, I don't think that's a problem inherent to the "genre". I ache to see a jukebox musical of Carpenters hits - they wrote some intensely theatrical songs, and it could be fab. JP |

Sweeney Todd has a mediocre ending.
| Salome |
how so? i am just curious as to why you think that?
and keep in mind it wasnt sondheim nd wheeler who wrote the ending..it was chris bond. |
||||||
| Quique |
It's a rehash of the beginning. I'm not talking about the scene in the cellar with Tobias and the officers. That's chilling. I mean, the part where the company comes out after that. I wish they would've dumped that bit and ended the show another way. Maybe just with Tobias saying, "Smoothly, smoothy," and a short, eerie musical piece after that and that's it. It would've been perfect. It just seems as if they didn't know what to do for the ending, so they just reprised the beginning. Though to give them credit, the lyrics are different and I like what they have to say. |
||||||

the ending is essential..the whole story is conceived that way. its an homage to brecht and the thetre of the resentational. you cant establish the show as being a story being told..intertwine the ballad throughout and then end the show withouit coming back to the stage. its absurd.

I didn't like Sweeney Todd. At all. Any of it.
I, too, am a Catholic. What's the hazing ritual to get into the gang? See how many Hail Mary's we can say before we pass out? Drink a gallon of communion wine and then say the rosary without any errors? Either way, I'm in. |

Come to NE Wisconsin. There's at least one Catholic church in every tiny town (even Stiles, unincorporated and Lena, population 300). In the "bigger cities" of 5,000 + there's at least 2-3 and in the mega metropolises ( Seriously, though - in my city there are two... and when my mother was a child she didn't play with the kids who went to St. Josephs. Because she went to St. Peter's. Yeah. |

||||||

True. But the trouble is, I think the Brecht-ian overtones were added to Sweeney Todd almost as an afterthought. And it shows. The most obvious piece of evidence is that the ballad concept completely disappears halfway through act 1, only to finally get a token reappearance at the end of act 2. They should have just scuttled the concept altogether after the opening.
Obviously two connected ailments. |

Ouch. Actually, I really like things that fall more into the dark category. I also enjoy Sondheim. I am actually puzzled as to why I don't like Sweeney, but sometimes your first experience with a piece can taint your bias, and mine wasn't... pleasant. |

Imagine yourself as an English major taking a theatre critique course for a gen ed fine arts credit at a college with a notoriously cliquey and "elite" theatre department.
Imagine yourself watching Sweeney Todd on video, then being required to critique said video. Imagine youself presenting said critique to class and being the only one whose critique did not go along the lines of "Sweeney is the best ever!! Sondheim is a GOD!! There is no show more perfect than this!!! Etc, etc." Imagine youself being skewered alive in front of 40 other people. Also, this particular scenario took place about 12 years ago when that particular English major was a dozen years younger with less confidence and self esteem. |

This is the kind of unpleasant personal remark about the work of the mods that has been far too prevalent on the site of late. As of last night it will no longer be tolerated. Please look at rule 15. 15. Do not annoy the moderators - If you annoy a moderator, your user-name may be revoked. Do not challenge decisions made by the moderators, if you do you are in violation of the forum rules and may have your user-name revoked. Questions about the forum rules should be addressed to the moderatos in PM or the thread specifically to discuss the forum. Please read and abide by the stipulations in the first thread in that post or it will be removed. Any posts on the rest of the forum will be summarily removed. http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=44895 As to the actual issue, the idea of me locking threads for such a reason is patently ridiculous. I am especially disappointed in this because we discussed the issue of Sondheim and moving threads at length and came to an agreement. I am taking no moderator action at this point as the new policy has to bed in for a while but please refrain from comments like this. Thank you. |

No seriously.
15. Do not annoy the moderators - If you annoy a moderator, your user-name may be revoked. Do not challenge decisions made by the moderators, if you do you are in violation of the forum rules and may have your user-name revoked. So... we get into a disagreement about say, a certain show or composer, and if you get annoyed, we could possibly be banned? What exactly constitutes "being annoyed?" Could we get a list, please. Also, not challenging decisions? Wow. It makes me all warm and fuzzy when my first amendment rights are so obviously not important. Wait. I hope this isn't annoying you. |

I like Jerry Herman and Sondheim and it's usually considered not possible to do both.
I loved the musical version of The Goodbye Girl. I thought The Tap Dance Kid was a lot more interesting than Dreamgirls. I think Henry IV could make a very good musical. I thought the book of Rex was much better than the critics thought. I think "Steam Heat" is a bore as a song and a scene. I find most characters in a Chorous Line annoying. I don't understand why anybody likes a spice as revolting as cinammon. I think the Rink is much better K&E score than either Chicago or Spiderwoman. |

I think ALW is a great musical composer, and I love his works, especially POTO, Cats, and Starlight Express. I don't see how he is worse than Stephen Sondheim just because he has a very different style, and has his own unique ways. I don't see what's to hate about him, to tell the truth.
I like Frank Wildhorn and his musicals, especially Jekyll & Hyde. I personally think Sarah Brightman is a great singer. I love her voice, both from her old musical theatre days and her later solo days till today. ~Sissi |

While we're talking about the show, I would just add that I think there are songs that also have some of Sheldon Harnick's best lyrics. I think between Harnick and Rodgers, "As Once I loved You" may be the best little known song in musical theater. It's an amazing song for both men. "Away from You" is one of Rodgers best ballads, which is saying a lot. |

| Salome |
Away from You is sheer brilliance..nothing less.
it may be my favorite song in musical theatre. I also adore "Field of Cloth Of Gold" and "Christmas and Hampton Court" |

I'd like to point out that Catholics really can't be blamed for the split-up-into sects nature of Christianity - it's the fault of everyone else who decided to run away and set up their own churches.
Wimp, no H. I brought 6 CDs with me to Spain. They are: * Spelling Bee * Pacific Overtures * Sunday in the Park with George * Saturday Night * Closer To Heaven (the Pet Shop Boys musical) * Altar Boyz of those, I've spent the vast majority of time listening to Altar Boyz. I love it so much more than any of the others. JP |

yes..but they did so because the catholic church was opressive and contrary to progress. |

And there are two ways to respond to that - one is to work to bring change from within, which is a long and hard and difficult task, and the other is to flounce off and form your own club where you get to make up the rules yourself. JP |

| Yip1982 |
I never really cared for My Fair Lady as it only served to expose a sense of ingratitude and betrayal between Eliza and Higgins.
I tend to yawn during Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story. Of the tetralogy of 1980s British megamusicals I found myself enraptured more by Cats and Les Mis than by Phantom. I tended to like Miss Saigon the least. Relating to this, I think I would rather my dose of POTO be half my dose of CATS. POTO is a pretty nice score, but I tend to feel cold when listening to it in full. Of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals I tend to like SOM the best. No grudges about Oklahoma and Carousel, but I think SOM shows them in their element. I think it makes a strong trilogy with South Pacific and King and I. If operettas are an early form of musical theatre, it is wrong to place the foundation of musicals squarely on the shoulders of the G&S operettas. Perhaps in this light operettas like Die Fledermaus, Orpheus in the Underworld, Countess Maritza and The Merry Widow should get more stagings by community theatre groups who stage G&S operettas as well as the canon of standard musicals. |

i don't think bounce was all that bad... i think wicked not only overrated but also schwarz's worst work to date...a HUGE step backward from children of eden...and godspell lol along the same lines, i think avenue SO deserved to win best musical. i think the full monty should have beat the producers for the tony. i think bernadette peters was a great mama rose. i think miss saigon is leaps and bounds better than les mis. i think ruthie henshall would be good if she'd ever open her damn mouth all the way. i think a chorus line is horrible. i think les mis should not have been revived. i think antonio banderas is the worst thing to have ever happened to musicals. fin. love all che |

Yes, even though I enjoyed myself at the show the other night, I must say that Wicked is indeed overrated. People on here and on other boards made it sound as if it's the best thing to happen to musical theatre in a long time. It's fun fluff, nothing more. The story isn't very memorable and the music is a mixture of cheesy chorus numbers and nice pop ballads. Again, I liked it, but it's not at all the best musical ever as so many claim. Far, far from it. I think Miss Saigon is severly underrated. Yes, it has what seems like a trillion sappy love songs, but other than that, it's a wonderful show. Though I personally disagree that it's better than Les Mis. I've never understood this thing about Ruthie and her jaw or mouth. I just don't see it. She sounds perfectly fine to me and her supposed lack of mouth opening is something so minor I have never really noticed it. I think she's one of the finest performers out there. A C-C-C-Chorus Line horrible? *Kills you* Les Mis was revived a bit soon and they f*cked with the orchestrations, which is a crime I will always resent deeply. But I need my dose of Les Mis, so it's all good. Why? Because he has an accent? I agree that his accent was too thick in Evita, but he seems to have won raves in Nine and is a good singer. |

I don't understand what the fuss about catholics is, but I'm anti-religion in general. Atheist and extremely proud of it. Gets me into trouble occasionally.
I like Linda Eder, I am impressed by how high she can sing (although her british accent is appalling) and I don't think the lyrics to Jekyll and Hyde are that bad. I think some ALW lyrics are worse. I don't think CATS is a particularly good show, but judging by the domination of the CATS board here that's unpopular. I like The Hot Mikado better than The Mikado. I used to like Wicked a lot more before I found out about the fan-girls. In Australia, we get sheltered from this. I didn't think Spelling Bee was as funny as everybody reckoned. |
