Un-called backdoes this happen to anyone else? this happens to me constantly. At least nowadays w/ email and cel phones you can usually track the producer down and say "what day and time was my callback" after that cryptic "can you come in again for us next week?"
but back in the day i drove sometimes 8 hrs to do a callback only to realize that the panel of judges in the room would have liked to have cancelled me, but just didn't bother to let me know they had cast the role in the meantime.

How frustrating! I've never had that happen to me, but that would truly suck.
I have, however, gone to a callback, only to find out that of 5 women called back for a particular role, 4 of them were only "courtesy callbacks", and the 5th woman (never me, of course) is the one that the director has already cast in the role.
I wish they would just be honest and say "this role is pre-cast, and it will be played by ________" rather than waste everyone's time making me jump through a bunch of hoops with no possible reward at the end.

This happened to my friend, except for that the role was not cast before callbacks, but before auditions.

Yeah, but the poor girl prepared and prepared and prepared. She asked the director if it was pre-cast, and he said no. But I was there when he told my mom (the set designer) that it had been precast--that was why they chose the show. D-R-A-M-A.

Ooh, I hate this. I was called back for a singing role in a show and was given a song to prepare for callbacks, on which I worked and worked and worked, and researched the motivation of the character at the time of the song, and every single lyric... Only to get to callbacks and be told that I was no longer being considered for that role, but another non-singing one, and they didn't need me anymore thanks buh-bye. Oh-so frustrating! THAT show was definitely a victim of pre-casting.

...i confess i have only ever been to uni auditions...but at one uni i had a feeling that they knew who they wanted and who they didnt before the auditions...just from the attitude of the staff, esp. the guy interviewing me!
Its not a huge issue...i got a place at a good uni...and the audition there was fun! we were not judged alone, but in our ability to work with other and how we comminicated in our interview (my interview turned into a conversation about shakespeare plays...the guy didnt even get round to asking me questions!) that was fun!
