Two Piano Orchestrations

I just got back from a matinee of My Fair Lady in which the orchestra only consisted of two pianos. Has anyone else seen it like this? What did you think of it? I rather liked it. The pianists were great and they did a dueling piece during intermission.

Someone did it at a very reputable regional theatre not too long ago and it got great reviews!

I think it would be really fun! Smile

it sounds like so much fun from a pianists point of view...

I once saw a similar production of Fiddler on the Roof, done entirely in Yiddish. I had some trouble understanding that language at first, until I realized that a lot of the words, especially numbers, were very close to German, of which I understand some.

Using two pianos in place of the orchestra or just one piano is a great tradition handed down since the late 19th century. Having two pianists rather than one adds so much more depth to the music.

I saw a production like this. I greatly enjoyed it, because the two piano players were brothers (one was the director and one was the movie director.) The pianos were directly in front of the stage, so we got to watch them play the beautiful baby grands, which was really quite interesting (the musical director really felt the music, and it came out through his posture as he played.) The show was good, but for me, the two piano players was the best part.

Was the show in Northern New Jersey at a community theatre by any chance?
