Two auditions/roles..declining one?

I was wondering, if one has auditioned with two different community theatres, and been offered a role in each - but the rehearsals conflict with each other - how does one politely handle this? If you are offered a role in the lesser appealing show first, does one have to accept/decline on the spot, and take a gamble on whether you will be offered a role in the more appealing show? Or is there a way to wait a day or so to see if the other theatre calls? If you DO accept the first one offered, and then are offered a role in the second one, how do you courteously decline due to the role you've already accepted?

I haven't encountered this yet, and likely won't, but this is the first time I've had two auditions pretty much back-to-back, so I haven't had to ponder it until now. Any advice is appreciated, as I'm ever-so-very perplexed. Smile

Thanks!

That's actually pretty common. Most directors will allow you a few days to "think about it", especially if you are waiting to hear back from another company.

Accepting a role and then later declining it because another company offered you something better is in very poor taste, and can potentially blackball you with the theatre group in question.

Declining a role because you've already accepted something else is also very common, and directors are used to hearing it. They may not be happy about it, but it happens. After all, they audition several actors for any given role, why should they expect actors not to do the same thing (i.e. audition for several productions at once)?
