Two ALNM Questions

1. How is Now-Later-Soon supposed to be done? I have seen one production where they are all sung at the same time in polyphonic harmony and another one where they are sung separately and individually. Which is correct?

2. I've also heard some good reviews on this board for the cut song, "Bang!" Why was it cut and can anyone send me a sound file of it to listen? Or at least the lyrics to look at?

Thank you!

For "Now" / "Later" / "Soon", I believe they are usually performed exactly as on the recordinds. If you are talking about the trio at the end of "Soon", then I also think that the recordings don't lie. As for them all at the same time, I doubt it would work, as each song has a very different length.

"Bang!" can be seen here:

First the three sing separately, then the songs intertwine.

I think it was because Glynis Johns couldn't handle the rythm of the "bang"s, so it was replaced by In Praise of Women. I also think the scene was restructured, to have only Carl-Magnus at the end.

Bang is SUCH a great song!

Wait wait wait. But "Bang!" seems to be performed by an outside observer, like a quintet member. Do you mean she couldn't dance to it?
How would the scene have worked, anyway, without cutting to Mme. Armfeldt? Does that mean "Liasions" wasn't there in the first drafts? Or did it go "You Must Meet My Wife" - "Liasions" - "Bang!" - Carl-Magnus?

Also, the other cut song (I can't quite "Remember" what it's called. "Two Separate Fairy Tales," I believe?). Why was that cut, and where would it have gone?

As for "Bang!," I think it's interesting, but I can't see it working in the current show. I also debate the idea of giving Fredrik and Desiree more stage time. I think I like "In Praise of Women" more. That way, we end up with all the characters' opinions.

Each song is sung seperately and then there's a trio at the end where the three songs intertwine, as Dvarg said. "Bang!" is on the Putting it Together DVD - it's up on YouTube here....

I believe it was intended as a duet. The way it is presented in "Putting it Together" is out of context.

On the Julie Andrews recording of PIT and MMAL, it is sung as it was supposed to be sung in the show: as a duet between Carl Magnus and Desirée.

I have heard the guess Two Fairy Tales was just written as a character song for Anne and Henrik, without any specific intended place, possibly early in the show. It seems to have been written very early, as you can notice it's the only song (I think) that has no relationship to the idea of threes as is characteristic for the rest of the score.

Bang! was a duet for Carl-Mangus and Desiree. It was to be the piece used to transition to the next scene but it didn't have the transition that they wanted to it was replaced with "In the Praise of Women." I think ItPoW works extremely well both as a great character song for the Count but the dialogue in the songs is fantastic, too. That said, I do like "Bang!" and I wish it could have been a bit reworked and added to the show somewhere else.

"Two Fairy Tales" is a very interesting song, indeed. It was cut early in rehearsals because the first act was running a bit long.

"My Husband the Pig" was another song that was cut and replaced with the second half of "In the Praise of Women."
