Too Old For Zaneeta?

I have my Music Man audition on Saturday and (up until a few days ago) I was all set to go for Zaneeta. However, after I started thinking about it, I'm afraid that I'll be too old for the part.

I'm 16, which I know is around how old Zaneeta actually is, but the auditions are open to grades 3-12. Since actors my age will be playing the adult characters and Zaneeta is supposed to be younger than them, do I still have a shot at the role? Or should I prepare for another character (I'm thinking Eulalie Shinn)?

At the audition, we have to sing 32 bars (I'm singing "Cock-eyed Optimist" and I'm not going to change that now) and then, if you're trying out for a speaking role, you do a monologue from the show. (They give you a sheet when you sign up to audition with the different monologues they want to hear for each character.) If I decide audition for a different character, I need to work on a different monologue, so I need to figure this out soon.

So do I keep working on Zaneeta or someone else?

Can you audition for more than one? When we did ours, all the younger kids were just children while our high schoolers still took all the leads. I guess it depends if you still have that really young childish look, or if your looks have matured so you look more like an adult.

I could write more than one character on the audition form, but (I think) can only do one monologue. Eulalie's monologue has more substance to work with than Zaneeta's, but I'd much rather have the part of Zaneeta. I'm afraid if I do a different monologue, it'll commit me to that role too much.

No, I don't have a childish look; I could easily pull off an adult.

The more I think about this while I'm typing, the more I think I should work more on Eulalie.

I think Eulalie is much more fun, but I'm not much of a dancer.

Eulalie is a great character....if I was a woman, I would have auditioned for her. But I had to settle for the Mayor instead. Mr. Green

Ok, I think you've convinced me to go for Eulalie. When I was first thinking about what role I could realistically get, I kept thinking that I'd probably end up as a Pickalittle lady. So why not go for the leader of the coop?
PappyCat

She's definitely a bigger part than Zaneeta. Break a leg!

Ok, so after sleeping on it, I definitely think that Eulalie would be more fun for me to be (I also realized that I have a lot more "inner Eulalie" than "inner Zaneeta," if that makes any sense.), but I really don't want to miss out on the fun dance numbers like Marian the Librarian and Shipoopi.

So then I was thinking that there's a good chance I won't get the role of Eulalie BECAUSE she's not in the big dance numbers and the directors know that I'm a really good dancer.

Oh well. In a week, I won't be stressing over this. It'll all be out of my control by then.

We wish you the best, keep us posted!

i thought 16 was the right age for zaneeta, but when i tried out for music man a 10 year old girl got it!
and its a grade 3rd -12 too.

I just got home from my audition! I think it went pretty well, so I'm feeling pretty confident. The directors were impressed by how prepared and professional I was (Thanks MdN for all basically teaching me how to audition!) so I'm hoping that shows that I'll work hard in the show. And I totally nailed the dance audition. I could see the girl behind me watching my feet and trying to follow them the whole time. Laughing

So tonight I find out via email if I need to go to callbacks tomorrow and then in about a week I find out my part (and if I'm cast, but I'm not worried about that)!!!

I got my letter yesterday and I'm Lillian Holland, a townslady. Which is disappointing. But I'll be the best darn townslady to ever live in River City!

Also, I know that one of my friends was hoping for Marian, but got Pickalittle Lady and she's dropping out, so there's always hope of replacement (which is incentive to work that much harder)!!!

See, that's what you get for having a positive attitude and sticking with the show. You get to go from random townswoman to fun Pick-A-Little lady. Yay! Congrats!
