Too old for Dodger?

I'll be 15 when I audition, I'm a baritone with blonde hair, blue eyes, and I'm 5'7. I sound pretty good singing "Consider Yourself" just...lowered a tad.

Is it worth my time to try out for The Artful Dodger?

What would be a good audition song for him?
(I'm usually so good at finding audition songs, but with this character I'm stumped)

Thanks.

It depends on how old you look, not necissarily how old you are. If you look old for your age, I would say no. If you look young then yes. However, your register is a big problem. Try findind a copy of the music or getting the CD and try singing along with the song at the register he sings it at. If you can it is at least worth a shot to audition for. But do that and decide whether or not you wish to audition first befre we give you anymore help.

like sweeney hyde said, if you look younger than your age, you could get away with it easily. another point worth noting is how old the oliver is and the rest of the cast. if your auditioning for a school show, don't audition for him - go for fagin (or another good part - there's quite a few!). even if you don't look younger than you are, my friend played dodger (he was 11 or 12, community production) and i heard that 12 was a bit young...

either way, most importantly is that you can act the part. nothing worse than having a fab singing dodger who can't do a cockney accent! Very Happy

i agree with sweeney (again!) get a cd of a production and try singing it at the right pitch, even if you speak-sing some of the parts and can reach most it, go for it.

as for audition songs, try something that is quite lively and for a boy with an unbroken voice and that isn't too overdone (possibly - the proper version - little people from les mis). whatever you pick, try to do it with the same flare that dodger has for everything!

best of luck!

tell me how it goes!

When I played Dodger I was 13 but the role was double cast and the other kid playing it turned 15 during the run. Though I do remember reading the charecter discriptions and it said that Dodger was actually 18 so I dunno. I'd say your biggest problem is your range and not age. And as for audition songs: I sang a bit of Wouldn't it be Loverly.

When I was Oliver in Oliver!, Our dodger was 22!!

i don't think it matters how old you are. if you can play someone older/younger it shows the range your acting ability!

a baritone is deffinately too low for dodger, but i think you should give it a shot. there aren't many boys in your average community theatre who could do oliver or dodger justice, so you should deffinately give it a try. it may not hurt to knock at auditioning for bill if you look a day older than you actually are, either.

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but my school's going to do Oliver! for the spring musical (high school) and I'm not too sure if I have a shot at getting Dodger. I can sing the songs fine, but I've heard Dodger sings soprano; I'm a tenor.

There's also two big problems: I'm only a freshman (aged 15) and I'm 5'10". I understand that's a tad too tall to play a child pickpocket. And the freshman part, well...there are barely any guys left in our high school to do the plays, much less the musical, and I have a feeling we'll get cast as the adults and a girl will end up being Dodger.

So, freshman-status aside, think I've got a chance at all?

Id personally say no to dodger ... but you never know, it depends on the director

Hm...what are some other good roles? Or do I even have a shot at Dodger?
