Timothy Nolen

Is it me or is he the best Turpin ever?
dolbinau

+1. Awesomely creepy and a very powerful singer. His Johanna is so much better than Edmund Lyndeck's on the OBC album.
Salome

His mea Culpa isnt MUCH better. but he brings a new angle to it and to the Judge..I love his performance.

I'd agree with Salome. Nolen has a great voice and I enjoyed the intepretation, really creepy.

My question is, has anyone seen him as Sweeney? Or as the judge in the
Chicago Lyric Opera production?
Pannic

He is my favorite Judge Turpin.

He played Todd? Sweet, I have to see that! Oh, wait, I can't.

Apparently he wasn't a very good Sweeney, at least for a specific production according to some people in this topic at least:

Quote:
His acting was wooden, if not non-existant, and he tried to match the tone of his speaking voice with his singing voice, causing his dialogue to sound completely unnatural and forced. He, along with many members of the cast, sang at one dynamic for the entire performance, without any variation whatsoever.

I was especially disapointed by the "Epiphany", which is one of my favorite moments in the score. Nolen seemed to be preserving his voice, so he over-compensated for his vocal reserve by thrashing about the stage and rolling on the floor.

Yes. He leaped off of the stairs between his tonosorial parlor and Lovett's pie shop, landed on the floor, and rolled around down there for a bit. It was, in a word, bad.

Sweeney definitely acted. (She said he didn't). He acted. He acted way too much. He overacted so much I was laughing. Literally. Over Lucy's body he screamed "NOOO!" and dragged it out for so long I thought I was watching "Miss Saigon". He swallowed the scenery whole.

Someone said he was better in another production though. ANd there are a couple of positive comments

And strangely Elaine Paige was Mrs Lovett, LOL. Here was a funny comment:

I almost got out of my seat and cheered when Elaine Paige was thrown into the oven.

i've only seen pics of him as Sweeney, in the applause books script. didnt look like a Sweeney to me at all.

i vaguely remember him as Turpin in the concert video, but it's been about 6 years, so i really need to see it again. i remember him having a fantastic voice, tho.

The man has an epic voice. His delivery of Joanna's "reluct-tance" is brilliant, of course that could have been from the director.

*shivers* Creepy is right. But his 'Johanna' is amazing. It's not only well-sung, but I thought it was well-acted too.

Who in God's name would give Lovett to Paige?!...I mean I admit I loved her Grizabella...but Lovett? Seriously?
