tick...tick....BOOM!I didn't really see a topic for this show...Anyways, I love tick...tick...BOOM!. I saw it last summer at a local theatre in Maine, and it was one of the best shows I'd seen. It's written and composed by Jonathan Larson (of Rent) and is basically about his life and his relationships. It's moving as well as a great insight to his career. Has anyone else seen it? And if so, your thoughts/comments? |

I've got the cast recording of it and I'm a big fan. Much like with rent, I'm not sure I would give so much of the credit for the final product to Jonathan Larson, though he started the creation. I'm fairly certain when they brought it to broadway (or was it just off-braodway? I'm not sure) they reworked quite a bit of it. Having heard both the OBC and Workshop versions of rent, I'm well aware as to how big a difference that sort of reworking can do (A towtruck allison a towtruck allison a towtruck a towtruck a towtruck allison!). Also, Boho Days being from the original version shows me what the show woulda been like originally. A song like boho days is cute on its own, but a musical with a lot of songs as rough as that song would be not so great.
I do love mah tick tick boom though. ~The Lone Wanderer |

I love Tick, tick...Boom myself--one of the first cast recordings i ever got. (Rent was my first)
To clarify the actual evolution of the show, It was originally a "rock monologue" that Jon was performing before writing Rent. He went through several iterations of the show before stopping and beginning serious work on Rent. In 2001, the Off-Broadway version of TTB was written by David Auburn (The Proof guy, I think) using songs of Jonathan's from previous versions of the show he had written/performed in the early 90's (And come to your senses, which was from Jon's other show, Superbia), and he expanded it from a one-man show into a cast of 3, writing his libretto based on early ones by Jonathan. This is off-topic, but with respect to Rent, the NYTW recording is from way before it opened on Broadway--Jon revised for about 2 more years before the Off-Broadway debut when he died. The final script as performed today is only slightly revised from how it was when he died (like 1 song was cut). In that case, he really does deserve the credit for all of what the show is today. Anyway, I love TTB (esp. Raul!) as well. |

I'm aware of the fact that he did many of the revisions and such from the Workshop recording thing and all, but my point is that many other people are also responsible for it. At that point many people were helping him revise songs and such. One story I've heard, though I'm not sure as to how true it is, is that Sondheim himself made Jon trash a certain song (as Jon really didnt want to). If you raed the rent bible (which I am quite sure you have ~The Lone Wanderer |

Fair point, upon reflection--I just hate to take credit for the fantastic score from him. |

It's much the same with all theatre, surely - unless it is a one-man show, with no tech at all, more than one person will be responsible for the overall production. Even down to the wardrobe person who bought/made Mimi's skintight pants - everyone influences the show.
I saw TTB over the summer a couple of times at the wonderful Menier Chocolate Factory in London. Fantastic production, what a wonderful show! Made me cry loads, of course - and in such a small venue, the cast kept looking at me - ok, ok, I was crying! It's a very touching story! I saw both Neil Patrick Harris and Christian Campbell as Johnny... they were both excellent, but somehow I slightly preferred Neil's interpretation, maybe because I saw him first. He was very much a "Roger", where Christian was a "Mark". Both brilliant tho. It was amazing to see Tee Jaye as Michael too - his image has been used advertising Cats and Fame for SO many years, to see him in a serious, real role was a bit strange. But he rocked! But best of all was Cassidy Jansen as Susan... tho actually the part didn't really show her off that much, "Come to your senses" was just stunning. Everything about it was stunning. I LOVE the show! |

Soundtrack? It's an original cast recording/original off-b'way cast recording.
That's what it's properly called. Sorry, it's the one thing that peeves me off. Des. |

Sources and Collaborators
Well, I think this is something that has certainly been hotly debated. There are people, like Lynn Thompson, who feel they deserve more credit (and royalties) for their contributions to the show. And Sarah Schulman feels that some of the show's narrative points and character beats were plagiarised from her novel, People in Trouble. Both cases were dismissed in court, but you know what they say - where there's smoke, there's fire. Later days David |

'Fraid I don't know much about it, save the fact that it's a Larson. Pity it never went on B'way. Or did it? I'm not too familiar with the show. Did it have anyone big in it? Is there a recording out? I only know one song from it, the title escapes me now, though.

I do believe there are recordings of it out... I know my roommate has it on her Ipod. I do believe it went to off-Broadway but it never was quite as huge as Rent.

I am a huge fan of ttB...at times you can hear echoes/beginnings of RENT (The beginning of No More/Rent, Real Life/One Song Glory, etc.) Come to Your Senses is one of my favorite songs. My voice teacher also had a student who performed in a version of it last year- a tour or something. I'm not exactly sure.

I like the first part of "CTYS". And only the first part.

actually i think its best it didnt go on broadway. Some shows are meant for off broadway. Off broadway can be just as good- its just a different show type. With TTB you need a smaller theatre for a more intimate story telling experience. The same could be said for the Last Five Years, and many 2- 3 person casts |

I've yet to see a performance of this, but the music is actually incredible.
I bought the sheet music for it, just wanting to see what it was all about (because it was by Jonathan Larson and he's amazing) and instantly fell in love with it! What's everyone's favourite song? Come To Your Senses and 30/90 are my favourites. |

I am in love with this show. I went to see it in LA and my mom and I knew absolutely NOTHING about it other than the fact that it was written by the same guy who did Rent. I walked out of it thinking "okay... that was good... You know... just good" Then my mom and I were talking about the parts we loved best and I realized that I was basically reciting the entire show! I absolutely love the soundtrack and the plot is interesting. so... yeah! Go Tick...tick....BOOM!
for the record... I would kill to sing "Come to Your Senses." Brilliant. |
