Tick TockAre there any recordings of Tick Tock besides the OBC one? I'm interested to hear what the changing orchestrations did to the rarely-used dance number, and I'd like to hear the music without the pre-recorded audio clips layered over it (which sound, out of context, like clips from a bad Seventies porno).

Yeah it's on the 1995 cast recording, but I believe that it has the porno lines on it. Nice orchestrations though.

I'm still sort of conflicted as to whether or not the solo interpretive dance fits in the show, and agree with its deletion in most revivals, but the music is pretty damned cool. I think if the number were staged in a way that it wasn't a solo dance out of nowhere, it would work better in context.
And darn it, I wanted to find this song without the "porno lines," partially because it's catchy, and partially because I wanted to use the music in a project for backing on a PowerPoint.

Without it we just don't know who Kathey is at all. She is a character that you can't discribe without the dance.

It doesn't make HER any more of a character. She's already long gone from Bobby's life- it just gives the actress a "hook." Ensemble singing, interpretive dance in Act 2. The absence of the dance is why she's often cast as The Cantor at the wedding and the Waitress in the final bar scene.

The girl who played her in the revival did a great performance. Its easey to see why they left the dance out. Because Doyles direction...... I need a drink.

It's an interesting piece, and the solo dance would work well in a Sondheim revue or a dance show. But in the midst of a musical like Company, having a VERY minor character (she wasn't the cantor or waitress at the time of the obc) return to do an interpretive dance, complete with pre-recorded voices of the other characters, seemed like a sudden and inexplicable choice. It was more of a "because she can" than "because it works" moment. I still think that the number has a place, but incorporating Bobby and the rest into it instead of it being an avant-garde solo would make it work a lot better. It wouldn't be Sondheim's only "dream ballet" per se.
Fun Fact: The score describes the number as "rock and roll."

Have you actually SEEN the Bennett choreography done? It bascially and brilliantly summarizes the whole theme of the show, in one brilliant dance number. I think any version of Company missing the number, is completely lacking. The theme has been expressed in song, and in drama already, it makes complete musical theatre sense that it's also shown in dance.
