Though I must say, I hate it....a theater in my area is going to be putting on High School Musical.
I was less than thrilled in the beginning, because, well, when the movie came out I refused to watch, in fear of the over-disneyfied suckiness. But, because it's with a good company in my area, I've decided I'm going to audition.
Listening to the music and looking at pictures, I'd say I'm closest to a Gabriella.
Does anyone have any audition song suggestions?
or any audition tips in general?
Thanks

well i happen to be a die hard HSM fan, so you're in luck.
Gabriella is really reserved at first and for most of the movie. She's quiet and shy. Try to find a ballad-y type song because she does have a ballad in the movie. Slower songs are better because most of the songs that she sings are slower.
what's your vocal range? how old are you? etc. etc.
Gabriella i say is a mezzo. An audition song that might be nice is Home from beauty and the beast. That or try to get a song that most people don't sing often, not a hard song but an older song. Usually i find that impresses the judges when you sing songs from the earlier days.
also, make sure you can dance because they most likely will have a dance callback.
hope i helped. =)

I'm 15, and a mezzo-ish first. I'd prefer something not belt-y.. because that's not my strongest area. Does Gabriella belt alot? What shows are similar to High School Musical? Where should I begin my song search?
Thanks for responding so quick! you're a real help!

Home tends to be slightly overdone. And while its nice to do something older, as you'll have less people singing that stuff, you should stick to the style of the show. I mean this is a pop show really. So its probably best to stick to something contemporary.

hmm maybe since it's a disney show singing a disney song might be good. Home is one that i mentioned but then let's see (whipping out my disney song book):
Reflection from Mulan (although that can be overdone/hard depending)
I Won't Say (I'm in Love) from Hercules (not done often but a nice ballad-y song- also it kind of is part of what Gabriella feels, she likes Troy but doesn't think it is real or think it could happen realistically)
Can You Feel The Love Tonight from the Lion King ( a nice back up song to have)
And
Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas
i'm gonna look for some other songs to help out. But my top picks are Home and I Won't Say (I'm in Love)

thanks so much!
I'll definitely keep both in mind.
I won't say (I'm in love) is an adorable idea, and seems like a really good song to have. I'll have to pick that up the next time I'm sheet music shopping

I'd say from that list I Won't Say I'm In Love is probably the least overdone and it does fit with the show.

my friends doing it in her summer theater program if I hear another "This feeling's like no other, I want you to knoooooooooow" then I might pukeeee. It was cute at first I guess but now it's overdone!
Good luck with your show though.

also, you might not want to but it might be a good idea to watch the movie again (or for the first time if you've never seen it) to get a feel for the character
although i wonder how much the show is going to be like the movie. i know that grease the movie is different from grease on the stage. so i wonder.
oh well. just a thought =)
