This is impossible

So I'm looking for a musical to do next year. The problem is we need one with not to many guys roles, you don't need good dancing to pull off, appropriate for childrens and isn't too difficult. The only thing I have come up with is Once Upon a Mattress and Carousel. Suggestios? What have you guys done for your high school shows?

Thanks.
Sweeney Hyde

Look at:

You're a Good Man Charlie Brown
Cinderella
Little Shop of Horrors
Seussical (stretching it for guys possibly)
The Sound of Music
PappyCat

Once Upon a Mattress is debatably not appropriate for children...We had quite a few kids in our audience who didn't get the sexual jokes and references, but there are quite a few.

Mattress might not have MANY guys, but requires some very skilled guys to do.

High Spirits is ideal.

it has 2 principal male roles.. one is non singing. 5 principal female roles 2 are non singing. and an ensemble.

its a delightful musical version of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit.

Annie (blech)
Music Man
Wizard of Oz

We've done
Sound of Music
Cinderella
Wizard of Oz
Music Man
all within the past five years...and the director doesn't like to repeat every ten years.

The problem with YAGMCB is that there isn't a chorus-and our director likes to have a large ensemble.

Would Little Shop be too difficult? You need some major talent to pull it off-don't you?

High Spirits sounds great. I think I'll check it out.

Thank you everyone for your ideas-I don't mean to shoot them down. Smile

Little Shop doesn't have a chorus, FYI.
Babe

Oh-right. Embarassed Thanks.

Little Shop and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown can have choruses, but I do not reccomend it.

Carousel may not be appropriate. How old are the kids (that would play leads)... 11-14 (middle school) or 14-18 (high school)? I only think High school age students could pull it off. My sister's middle school did Matress last year. It was an AMAZING production, but they are VERY advanced for their age and I only really reccomend it for High Schools as well.

What about Once On this Island? It has a pretty flexible cast as far as men and women.

Godspell would be good... again, a flexible casr, but like Little Shop and Charlie Brown, it can have a chorus but is not reccomended.

There's a MUSICAL of Blithe Spirit?! I'd love to see that!

It's high school and the leads would be 17ish. I'm not so sure about Carousel-they aren't really into the old classics here. Our director has said two shows she NEVER would do is Urinetown and Godspell. She's not a fan. Do you see why this is so difficult? Really a disney type show is ideal-but B&tB as well as Cinderella have been done. I'm going to talk to the director about this tomorrow. We'll see what she says...

Wait... you're not the director...?

It's her decision, not yours.

And to be quite honest, I love the classics and wish that more people my age (17) did too.

No-I'm the assistant director. She's been extremely busy lately and asked me to start looking at shows for her. She asked that I come in with a couple ideas in the fall that we could discuss. And when I said they're not into the classics very much here I thought it was clear that I did not mean me personally. I was speaking about the town in general-we haven't gotten great crowds for classics like Oklahoma in the past and have been reluctant since then to go back. The Music Man didn't go over great either from what I am told.

Stepping Out is good, it's a mostly female cast with one man, and you could always add more people to the class and share lines around. If you don't know it, it's a smallish story about an adult tap class taught by an ex-dancer, who get invited to perform for a charity do. The dancing can be as good or bad as you like, and you can probably tone down the subtexts about domestic violence and abortion.

Yes, Stepping Out is brilliant. I did it as a play at college and it was great fun.
