Thinking of directing

Hey there.

At the church my family attends, I've been approached about possibly directing the junior version of this show.

I know a little bit about this show, I can't say I'm anywhere near an expert on it though. (Obviously research would change that)

My main questions are:
Would the jr. version of Godspell be possible for me to pull off with limited costumes, sets, no elaborate lighting, etc. and performers ages anywhere from youth to adult?

This would be my first time directing anything, I'm a teenager, and since this would just be for a church performance I was just curious as to if this could be done.

Just any overall advice on how I'd go about tackling this, info about your past performances of it, your experiences directing it, etc.

Thanks. Smile

EDIT: If anyone has pictures from their production or any knowledge about how different the junior production is from the regular version, that'd be greatly appreciated!

There are pictures all through this forum. I've done Godspell several times, as both performer and director, and the regular version is possible with limited costumes, sets, no elaborate lighting, etc. and performers ages anywhere from youth to adult. That's the kind of show it is. However, even though it appears "easy" to do, it is difficult and takes lots of prep. So much so that it has an entire website devoted to it: http://www.musicalschwartz.com/godspell.htm

If you have any specific questions, there's a bunch of us who have lots of Godspell experience here. Just post 'em!

Jr. version changes keys to be suitable for kids' voices and cuts "Prologue (Tower of Babble)," "Turn Back O Man," "Alas for You," and "By My Side," along with the material surrounding them.

In my personal opinion, I'd advise you to go with the regular version.

I just did basically the same thing you want to do (directed a church production). I thought about the junior version, but so many of my personal favorite numbers were cut. So I decided to go with the regular version. As Robin said, either way it can be done minimally and is really supposed to be.

If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.

But yes, it CAN be done. Smile

I agree^^. I just can't imagine godspell without turn back o man or by my side. The costuming isn't elaborate, the script only says for them to be 'dressed like clowns', which you can take however you like. I too am a teenager, and think it sounds like a great opportunity. Go for it!
