so, the question i'm asking you is:
a) please give me tips on how to photocopy
b) how big a deal is it if parts are cut off?

What parts are cut off?

I'd say if a lot of the accompaniment is gone, then you're screwed. Be sure to recycle the paper!

The problem with sheetmusic is that it is usually printed larger than standard 8.5 x 11 paper. So when you go to photocopy, it's usually cut off. What I do is photocopy it onto larger paper... 9x14 or something. And then I cut off the excess.

Even easier, scale the copy to 89-92 percent. That should work.

.... not that anyone is telling you how to do something illegal or anything...... but, yeah..... reduction works.

it's not like i'm selling it...the sheet music is intended to be played/sung/etc. and that's what i'm doing. if it were illegal to photocopy sheet music (or any books in general) they wouldn't have photocopiers at the library.
...right?

Its still illegal. But try and think of a place that actually follows those laws.

I used to be a librarian, and technically it is legal to make ONE copy of something copyrighted, for personal use. However, one could argue that using music for an audition is "performing" it in some way, since others are hearing it. No, nobody is going to be the Xerox police, but still, lots of sheet music specifically says "do not copy" on it; obviously, it's hurting the sheet music producers' business directly, not to mention royalty issues, etc.
Back to the copying issue--yes, reduce it, but it that doesn't work, you might have to copy each page twice, making sure you get the top clean on one, the bottom on the other, and tape them together somehow.

"Art in the age of mechanical reproduction." Anyone ever read that essay? Very interesting. And written ages ago. 1920's I think?
