Theatre GhostsI've seen a show about a Follies Dancer named Olive who haunts the New Amsterdam, and that Judy Garland haunts the Palace. I was just wondering, have you heard of any other theatre ghosts? What are their stories? |

When you consider the height of emotion, and the concentration of people, that you get in theatres it's amazing that there aren't more ghosts.

Of course I have. He was called the Opera Ghost and The Phantom. I believe there was a show written about him...I think it was something like The Phantom of the Opera. Have you heard of it?

Yes! By Maury Yeston! That's who wrote it!

Actually there is a supposed ghost at a local theater. His name is Jethro...don't ask me why. The building used to be a church and apparently he was a priest who commited suicide by jumping from the balcony. I don't know. It always did feel creepy in the basement there, but I've never really had an "encounter" persay. I've had friends who claim to have felt or saw something though.

Most church balconies aren't big enough to throw yourself from and die... so wow. That must be pretty big.

I said that wrong. He hanged himself off of the balcony...I think. It's been a while since I've heard the story and I think it's changed over the years. |

Aren't you supposed to go to the bad place with fire if you commit suicide? Odd choice for a priest to willing risk it.

If you're talking about Christianity, it is not said in the Bible that you will go to Hell if you commit suicide (although some people think you do). |

really? Hmm. Guess who's not religious and her knowledge of Christanity is from the children's bible she owned at age 7 and that didn't mention scary things like Hell and the devil.

When i say theatre ghost, i mean the deceased whos spirit haunts the theatre, not a deformed man running around an opera basement... |

One of the theatres that I work at has an old lady ghost named Ethel. She has a blue bonnet, and she lives in the basement of the theatre, mostly in the boiler room. The basement is kind of catacomb-esque... lots of little rooms and corners and STUFF, and it's huge. There is a door to the basement in the lobby, and you can run through the basement to the backstage area from the lobby. When I was doing The Secret Garden there, I had to run through the basement to get backstage after a house exit, and I SWEAR, I saw her in the boiler room, but when I turned more to get a better look, THE LIGHTS WENT OUT. It was the scariest thing ever.
A theatre that I used to work at had "haunted mannequins". No lie. They were in the windows, and we dressed them up to promote various plays. Sometimes they would move overnight by themselves when the window case was locked. Once when I was in a show there, a boy came running into the theatre SCREAMING that he had just seen the mannequins move. He was TERRIFIED. The theatre that I am working at right now supposedly has a ghost... I think her name is Lucille. I've never seen her but my director says that she doesn't like him, because she always turns all the lights on again after he locks up. The theatre is over a bar, and sometimes she turns the music WAY UP on the bar's sound system. They think she's a party animal. I've never seen her, but other actors and crew have, mostly in the reflection of the front door window, sitting on the stairs. |

At my school, we have a ghost who fell off the balcony and now haunts the auditorium. His name is Ely. We scared the crap out of the director's little daughter when we told her the story. We thought she already knew about him! We felt bad after that... |

I like to think every theatre has its ghosts...

Our auditorium is brand new. Not to mention that our entire old building (the school moved into a new one in January) was built in 1893, then destroyed in a fire in 45, and STILL hasn't been torn down. I have a feeling we just miiiiight have a haunting or two. |
