Theatre & College - Read poll options before answering

My college classes thread has me realizing that the majority of the people on here who are going to college are majoring in theatre in some form. So I was curious to see how many people actually are, or are planning on majoring in it.

If you are done with college, please answer with an "I am currently" as I didn't have enough space or enough options to write out "I have already" options

Read through all the poll options before you answer, please! There are a lot of options, so you might fit one better than the one you originally thought!

I don't like putting "Other" options in polls, since I think it's messy and people get really nitpicky and than tend to pick that option. I tried to put as many options as possible. Pick the one you are closest to, if you differ slightly. If I completely overlooked one, feel free to let me know and I'll edit the poll.

I originally was going to have "I am Completely Undecided" and "I am not planning to go to college" as options, but I rang out of space. Feel free to post if you are either of those.

Anyway, thanks for reading and satisfying my curiosity.

I voted for currently majoring in theatre, with a tech theatre emphasis.

I'm leaning towards Stage management, props, and dramaturgy, although I haven't chosen a focus officially.
The Very Angry Woman

I didn't major in anything related to theatre. I didn't minor in anything at all.
Mara

I'm majoring in Acting, but I hope to go on to study musical theatre after this degree.
Mungojerrie_rt

Mine is unrelated.
Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Wildlife Science.

That sounds really interesting! I have a friend who is a Fish and Wildlife major. What do you hope to do with your degree?
fjays

Don't know really. Maybe a zoo or something. I just like animals.
Robinflamingo

I majored in Musical Theatre Education, which is a made up emphasis in my college's theatre department. But there is a theatre education option, and you don't have one, so I chose another one.
curlyhairedsoprano91

I'm planning on minoring in vocal performance, but not theatre.
kozafluitmusique

i plan on majoring in music education (with, at the rate it seems, hopefully am all-instrumental,choral, and general...we'll see) as well as taking a theatre double major. maybe. i don't know.

i'd also love to minor in voice or flute performance, but haha...i'm not good enough Smile someday...
Melindaisy

I majored in Art Education, and had a minor in Theatre - set design.
nycbound

I graduated with a degree in Theatre with concentrations in Performance and Theatre Education.
blue wind

i'm only a high school sophomore, but i'm definitely interested in studying dance. possibly minoring.
lakmé

I majored in music, with a minor in German.
Webster

Acting Major currently.
Salome

you missed...already have a degree in theatre.
reedzee

Mine is a bit different...

It's a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance and musical theatre.

AllThatJazzHands

I am currently an English major. I used to have a Drama minor, but it was a bit too much of a workload. I did get the chance to take a musical theatre class, which was a lot of fun and it filled one of my general ed credits.
~GertrudeMcFuzz~

I'm planning on majoring in musical theatre, but that depends on how my auditions go this fall. And what schools I decide to apply to.

If I go to a school that doesn't offer a musical theatre major, I'll probably major in vocal performance and minor in theatre. Or double major in those two, I'm not sure. But I would definitely prefer an actual musical theatre major.

But I also want to do instrumental music in college, not as a major or minor but as an extracurricular thing. Because I really don't think I could give up my clarinet. Smile
Salome

I dont belive in Musical Theatre degrees.

No...no I'm pretty sure they're real.

Believing in the validity of them, that's up to people's opinions, but they're definitely real.
Salome

Smart ass. LOL
qpidsangel

Salome, I thought you had a degree in Communications.

Read my enitre first post, please!
highkick49

I'm majoring in musical theatre, and this degree is already too intense to even attempt at trying to minor or double major in something else; i'd be here for FOREVER.
PappyCat

We are required to minor.
Vice

I'm planning on double majoring in Technical Theatre (An emphasis on Theatre Costuming and Theatrical Directing) and Art History (Emphasis is historical clothing and costume).
Salome

qpidsangel wrote:

yes i do. B.A. in communications. and an M.A. in theatre. doubled majored in undergrad.
Orestes Fasting

Transferring into Smith College's computer science department in the fall. The majority of my MT and vocal performance stuff will probably be extracurricular.
happyguava

For me there is a big difference between "planning on studying..." and "will actually get accepted to study..."

I did tick the "planning on music theatre" one, but it's not going to happen.
Mungojerrie_rt

PappyCat wrote:

Here it's usually either two majors, or one major that is twice the size (like mine). There is no minoring.

Why won't it happen?
You make me sad when you're down. Sad
shakalakababy

I plan on double majoring in music composition and theater.

doesn't realistically make much sense, i know.

I'm going in next year with just a theater major though, i can't add a double major for another half a year
wicked_diva

I don't fit into any of your options. I'm currently a BFA Acting major, but I also am getting a minor in technical theatre with an emphasis in Costume Design.

So I guess I'm option 1, but it's not the best match.
PappyCat

How is it not a perfect match? You are a theatre major. I never said "BA or BS in Theatre."

Minor was only worked into the equation because some people minor in theatre with a completely unrelated major.
Trevor reincarnate

I'm getting my GenEd out of the way at a community college and taking a Theatre / Dance / Vocal class here and there.

Once I'm done with the boring stuff everyone has to do, I'm going to transfer to a 4-year and major in Musical Theatre.
Quique

^ That's what I did, except I'm a Liberal Arts major.

I need a year, then one year more for my teaching credential.
Amber

I'm a BFA Acting with Musical Theatre concentration.

Minoring in Italian.

I did the same exact thing. It was one of the best decisions I've made.

Minor was only worked into the equation because some people minor in theatre with a completely unrelated major.

We have a theatre performance major (and we used to also have a theatre arts major) in addition to the Acting major, and there is a lot of separation between the two.
teapot

The theater degrees offered back when I first entered this business about 40 years ago were so different as to have very little in common with modern university theater courses; performers had liberal arts degrees with theater minors and technical people rarely had degrees specific to theater because the courses just weren't generally offered. (There were exceptions.) Now, most of the serious resumes and applications that come through my offices have very specific theater degrees, with tech being heavily laden with specialities. I do see many aspiring actors' asking for representation who have no formal training at all; and many of those have no interest in theater as an art form. It is really interesting to me to see what you younger students want to do to prepare for a career in the arts. I can tell you that whether in casting or in trades I am always most interested in seeing what you have studied and what you have actually done. I also look at where you studied, and with whom. If it is someone I respect, I am much more likely to look at you closely.
Nudelkopf

Currently: Mining Engineering. But now bored.
Going to try to get into Applied Science as a Dean's Scholar (will be a bit odd, as they normally only take straight out of school - but have had discussions and will prob. get in)

If/when I start: Major in Chemistry, with comajor in Mathematics.

Heavy research component, will take 4 years to do (including honours). Then will do my Masters, if my thesis sucks. Hopefully skip masters and straight to starting my PhD Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Oooh, I'm currently at St Lucia! Hey buddy! (Assuming UQG means you're at Gatton, otherwise I've made a fool of myself)

You got UQG right. Animal Welfare, Behaviour and Handling test on Monday. Crying or Very sad

I am doing a 2 year performing arts course in September at College (note College in England is a different thing to College in America) and I'm not entirely sure what "majoring" means. If it means doing no other courses except theatre then yes I am majoring.

I voted planning on majoring in musical theatre.
sephyr

Well I major in Music Education but I will major in Musical Theatre next year...I'm really excited Very Happy
Clarabelle

I've got a BA(Hons) in Music with first study singing (classical and jazz). And I've got a BSc(Hons) in midwifery. Both 2.1. I'd like to do an MA in Musical Theatre but it would essentially be for my own fun; I will probably do an MSc or MA in Midwifery but that looks reeeally boring at the moment. Sad
littlemisstheatregirl

Hoping to major in MT or in theatre performance with a concentration in MT. But it all really depends on how my auditions go this fall, I'm going to be a senior so it's a critical year. Ugh. Sad

If I don't get in anywhere, I'm gonna end up at one of the non-audition programs. Probably Muhlenberg. Maybe Cornell, if my application is strong enough.

Ideally, though, I want to go to Marymount Manhattan, JMU, or Coastal.
le_moofin

It kinda depends on the school that I go to, but I pretty much plan to major in journalism and POSSIBLY major/minor in either MT or Vocal Performance. But since I will most likely only major in journalism and nothing else, I chose the last option =D
EponineMNFF

Mine is sort of confusing--I'll just pick option one for right now.

I'm majoring in theatre, but there's a musical theatre major as well that you have to audition for after your first year. If I don't get it, then I'll continue on as a straight theatre major, but if I do, I'll be MT. But I'll just pick theatre for now. Smile

My really good friend Corey goes there as a MTP...we're talking about James Madison, right? He loves it and their grads have a lot of success. I just saw the tour of DRS a few mos. ago and the standout performer was Jolene, a JMU grad.

I can ask him more about it for you, if you want!

Yes, James Madison - I have a friend who's studying costume design there.

I didn't like it because it felt too overwhelming, and because i want to study music education (I play the flute as well), it just seemed like a bad fit for what I wanted to do with music education. Plus it was a rainy day, and the campus looked gloomy.

I want to go to GMU Smile
elizabethjaneforrest

After changing my major several times, I finally settled on Communication.

I was a theatre arts major for a year, and I had a full scholarship, but that also meant that I had to participate in every single show the school put on. This would've been a dream come true, but the head of the theatre department hated musicals and only liked 3-hour long dramas that dealt with death and gloom.

Theatre became "work" instead of something I loved. I took a long time for me to recover from the experience, but now I'm just getting back into community theatre. I think it will always be a very important part of my life, but I never want it to feel like a chore.
