I prefer Patti's "Worst Pies...", but not as it was performed in that concert. More like this:

There is also this bit from the London National Theatre Cast with Julia McKenzie: http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=VXg5tut9LXo

And let us not forget this rendition: http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=uPSL5FPTn9A

That lady is flippin SCARY!

My vote goes to Angie. She practically wrote the song.
Patrick

Its either McKenzie or...

Ah, who am I kidding, Lansbury's it, but I like Julia as well.
Sweeney Hyde

I like Lansbury's the best...I read somewhere were she was talking about hearing the song the first time...Sondheim had already written "By the Sea"...so when he came in and said to her something along the lines of "Angie...I've got an ever better one for you now!"...she was excited like nothing else. Then...while he was playing it...he was doing all the motions and "Frailing about madly" and had them all in stitches.

I also like Julia's and Patti's though.

I think I like Patti's Worst Pies better in the revival than either concert version she was recorded in.

Ill always prefer Angela over all. i dont really care for what Im hearing of the film's songs - they sound so boring. but, still good, i guess.

when i first saw the show before knowing a thing about it, there was a wonderful mrs lovett (even though it was community theatre) and sweeney. the cast was fabulous and it was a very well-done production.

i dont like patti lupone and cant stand her mrs lovett. she tries too hard and her mouth is HUGE. i keep thinking she's gonna eat the audience!

nah theres something bout angelas voice that anoys me its slightly whiny pattis on stage performance was very funny she put a lot of energy into it plus i think she has a way better voice than angelas

Please try to use punctuation and capitalization on this board...a lot of people don't tolerate this sort of type...

Sorry text speak lol Embarassed

My vote, shockingly, goes to HBC, purely based on the fact that she COMPLETELY changes her voice when she says "Ick, what is that?" and "no you don't"

runner up would be McKenzie tied with Lupone.

Angela's voice just grates on my nerves too much, and her breathing is terrible. I mean, yeah, it's supposed to be, but that's no excuse for making it sound like you can't handle it.
ickle2

Yes i noticed that in a clip i saw HBC ick sounded to me quite low lol.Is it supposed to change like that? also in worst pies in London her voice goes a bit high and i dont think she can hold them notes without going a bit cracky.
Xack

I sometimes accidentally refer to Ms. Lovett as Ms. Lansbury. I think we all know where my vote goes.

Sweeney Todd is not goofy. Lovett is not a goofy character. It was the choice of the Original Broadway production to make Lovett goofy and it was Terrible. The revival Lupone is the best.

Ms. Lovett wasn't goofy, it was a front to make people trust her. That was the brilliance of it, you immediately love her, but then she does so much evil. She shouldn't just be upfront and dark, she's much smarter than that.
ickle2

Laughing goofy! lol hmm i dont thin kshes suposed to be goofy, a slightly off edge sort of person hmmm maybe goofy is the word i dunno she seems to me like an slightly maniacish character st is slightly sane tho lol.hes more sane than nl.

*watches McKenzie's performance* Shocked Wow...Mrs. Lovett's a boozer...and a really dirty boozer at that. She looks like she just rolled out of her own oven...that's actually kinda funny! Laughing

Yeah, I can't really say whose my favourite, but I really do like McKenzie's take on the part. As much as I love Angela Lansbury, I prefer the blatantly cold and vicious Lovetts to the silly ones. Unlike the comment 3 posts above me, I don't take the silliness to be a front. Instead I see it as the way she really is, which isn't my preference for Lovett. Or more so, I think Lansbury was too silly. There wasn't enough evil in her...but that's just my opinion, so please don't shoot me for it. Silenced

i dont know about the word 'goofy', but how can anyone listen to "The Worst Pies In London" and take it seriously or dark/evil? that song is a lil' silly and more fun - not demented.

Huh? The song is purposefully written full of awkward rythms and twists to demonstrate Lovett's insane mind. How can one NOT take it seriously?

well, then... i guess i myself took it the wrong way. hah.
Salome

Lansbury hands down. Beth Fowler was no slouch at it either though.

Don't get be wrong, it's also a very hilarious and entertaining song Very Happy

(It's just that something funny can also be taken seriously at the same time Wink )

Actually, that's exactly what I was saying. And I've said it before here many times. And ickle2 she is goofy in the original. And it makes the character all the more disturbing that she is just "fronting" this lovableness and goofiness, yet doing so much evil.

EDIT:
And, she is sane. That's also what makes it freaky. She's sane and doing all these evil things. He has sort of an excuse for it because he was locked away for 15 years, his wife killed herself, and his daughter is with the judge who locked him away. So yeah I'd be pretty pissed too. He's not more sane than she is.

I never knew she played Mrs. Lovett! What cast was she in? I'm guessing this was in London?
