The Witch's Choice

Now in Last Midnight, she despairs of Cindy and the Baker, and Jack and Red's wishes and crimes and then leaves them too. However, the Witch also has her crimes, but she at least accepts them. But the Baker also leaves, but returns. Do you think the Witch was being hypocritical by leaving them or was she in the right?

Or should ConverseSneaker never drink soda past 9 o'clock again while posting on MDN?

As usual, you make some excellent points, but let me see if I can explore this a little further. It's very interesting that you're comparing Witch and Baker. IMO, the only reason Baker comes back is because his father talked him into it. The Witch doesn't have anybody to give her little pep talks. She's basically ostricized everyone in the entire show; she even drove one character to the point of insanity! Nobody in their right mind would want to hang out with the Witch, so the fact that she left them was a great decision on her part. Plus, everything that happens after she leaves them turns out for the best. You witness major turn-arounds in both Cindy and Baker. All the events after "No More" occurs are not hindered by the Witch in any way, so everyone is better off.

Also, the Witch doesn't have the best morals out of all the characters in the show. The Baker comes back because he's seen the error of his ways and knows how to improve upon them. This isn't to say that Witch doesn't have her strengths as a character. Lapine himself has said that while the Witch may not have the best morals, she's the most honest character in the show. She always tells the truth, which in a way is a paradox of Baker's Wife. BW is the strongest, most developed character in the whole show. Anyone who's visited this board should know that there's no denying that. However, while BW has these wonderful strengths, she's not exactly the most honest character in the show. But the audience lets her get away with it because her good qualities outnumber her bad qualities.

Hope this helps you somewhat. Very Happy

I've read the Lapine said the Witch was the most honest character too.

But here's another thought to add on to my orginal post. The Witch tries to right the wrongs by simply handing over the boy for the good of all while Cindy, Baker, Red and Jack kill her using trickery.

As for why the Baker returns, I always thought that he realized he was being like his father and now the Witch and decided to resolve that. His father('s ghost) didn't talk himself into it, he did.
I ain't down yet!

The witch is a great character. her mother sounds like a nasty woman, we dont know about her father, but we take it she never married and must have spent most of her life alone, which is probably why she was so overprotective of rapunzel and had no idea how to be a mother to her. Rapunzel was the thing she cared most about in the world -- rapunzel was, to her, what she once had, youth and beauty. when she lost that, she must have jumped on the chance to live through a younger more beautiful girl. their whole relationship is strange (and, therefore, the witch's relationship with herself is strange and complex also), complex, and key to the show.

once the witch loses rapunzel (to the Prince), her one reason to keep living and the only reason she has for anything, she starts to go a little psycho. well, a little more psycho. she kind of gives up, especially when rapunzel goes squish. she doesn't really have any reason to do anything-- she has no power, no daughter, everyone hates her, and her beauty is useless when no one appreciates it. I think that's why she dissapears. she just doesn't want to deal with the others anymore, especially with their ITS NOT MY FAULT attitude. i think she considers herself of higher intellegence than the rest of the characters ( i think she is also) and she's just sick of them so she goes poof.

and why she's honest about everything? why shouldn't she be? the rest of the characters have other people that they care about present, they all have a strong self-image that they have to keep up. they have something to proove, either to themselves, or to another character. in other words, they're all really proud. The witch is very proud, but she has magic and, i presume, has grown up with magic, so she doesn't need to worry about other people not liking her-- she can always zap them if they annoy her.

How fabulously put. I actually snorted here.

I have nothing intelligen to contribute to this discussion right now because it's 2:00 AM and I need to go to bed, however I thought I would add that when I read the above quote I just pictured Rapunzel getting stepped on and a really loud "SQUISH" noise followed by some goo...

Okay bed now, I'm becoming even odd then usual o_O

I think her magic, beauty and honesty make the Witch feel better and higher than the rest. Of course, during the show, she's either without her magic or her beauty, but she remains honest. It makes her better, an actual good person compared to the rest of them, with thier deceit and lies.
