The Witch for a guy

Now i know some of you are probably cuzzing the computer out right now when you read the title but please here me out.

It has been announced that we are doing "Into the Woods" this year for our musical. And i am so excited. Im 6 ft. Tall and thin. Brown hair. Green eyes. Pretty Strong baritone to second tenor but with a pretty good falsetto(1st alto- 1st soprano) And i talked to the director and he has agreed to let me audition for the witch and says if i can convince him then he would consider casting me. I think they would want the "ugly" witch played as a women and then the big suprise is WOW thats really a guy. I've been acting since age 4 so i dont think the acting part would trouble me to much. I really want this part but does anyone have advice on how the witch would be played as a male when he is turned beautiful? I have been practicing Stay With Me and Last Midnight a lot. Any advice would be great!

Thanks

In my opinion...there are enough awesome guy parts in this show that you should stick with them. Sorry, I don't mean to sound rude but in the big scheme of things there are always more girls then guys who audition for musicals and the Witch is a really amazing part for any girl to play. I have heard of guys playing the witch when she is supposed to be "ugly" and then turns into a beautiful woman...but never the other way around. Plus, a witch is a female...so would you change the character's name to "the Wizard" or "the Warlock"?

Why not play one of the Princes? They are totally awesome parts! So is the baker...but with your lower voice I'd say a prince would be perfect for you!

Again, just my opinion. Plus it sorta takes away from the whole Mother/Daughter thing with Rapunzel...

I dunno. Not my cup of tea, but all the luck to you if you want to go through with it.

I think it could work, but there are so many amazing roles for guys in this show and you could probably get one of them easily.

I think it's feasible, but not likely. I agree that you'd be taking away a part from a girl, and there's always A LOT more girls auditioning than boys. Plus, you really need stong performers for the guy parts in ITW.

But, if you really want it, I'd say go for it. Last Midnight would probably sound pretty cool in a lower key.

Break a leg!
The Drama Queen

^ what they said. Unless your positive there are absolutely no females going for the role, don't do it. The Princes, Baker, Jack, and Wolf are all amazing roles for guys so I would say go for one of them. I really don't see it working very well at all- someone mentioned above that the Mother/Daughter aspect of the Witch and Rapunzel would be lost and I completely agree. My advice= don't do it.

But i ask you to think about it like this, who is always more protective of their daughter a mother or father? Ever herd of Daddy's little girl? Or mama's boy?
But i do understand, The baker and cinderella's prince are my second choice.
Im also just afraid that we dont really have a girl who could pull of the vocal and acting part of the witch. The girls who could sing pretty in stay with me dont have the belt power at all and the belty girls i dont know if they could make stay with me tender and intense without yelling. lol. But idk some of them may suprise me. Im not trying to sound full of myself or anything but i know that i could fully pull off both parts of the witch and when telling people my idea and reasoning they say that they are cheering me on and hope i get it.

Any advice is great. Thank you

Alright, that does make sense there, but I'm afraid the whole male witch locking away Rapunzel would turn too much into the Judge and Johanna relationship.

I actually think that might be an interesting dynamic.

And either way, I want to play the Witch because the Witch has all the best songs. And as a male, the Witch would be a bass, making it that much more awesome.

Thank you!
I just feel that this could possibly be an amazing chance and i wouldnt want to pass up trying out for it. Most directors would probably flat out say no but if i can get a possible maybe that good for me.

It's been done before.

Are you singing the Witch's songs in the original key? If so, are you singing them in the same octave or an octave lower?
Gwen

...what about change in the lyrics? The first thing to come to mind for me, personally...
"...I'm just right, I'm the witch. I'm the hitch I'm what no one believes I'm the witch...." --in the song Last Midnight
and that's after the transformation.

If he's a tenor, then I doubt he could just move it down an octave. Like that, it would be a bass-baritone part.

I am technically a baritone. If i get enough air i can belt a high E. But my regular belt stops at about a C sharp or a D. I think he said that the ugly witch he would want to be played like she was a women(this would be the new curse that we find out after the transformation). I have a prtty good falsetto so i can sing stay with me in that. But after the transformation it would be in the male octave.

Thanks agian. Any more advice is great!
