The Von Trapp EscapeHow did it actually happen?I'm told that they never went to the Abbey to hide from the Nazi's. I was also told that Franz (a Nazi sympethiser) had ratted them out on the night of their performance/escape. How did they get out of the arena without being detected? So, was the escape in the film embellished for Hollywood. Help? Andy. |

I believe the real story was that they caught a train somewhere. Not quite as exciting as walking over the Alps.

Re: The Von Trapp Escape
In the movie Franz was watching the family pusing their car from a balcony. I don't know whether he was involved beyond that. More to the point: someone's command of geography was way off. Salzburg is over the border not from Switzerland, but from Freilassing, in Bavaria, Germany. The nearest Austrian-Swiss border crossing to Salzburg, without cutting through Germany, is from Griessen, Austria to Hochfitzen, Switzerland - today about a 1.5 hour drive. Check it out on www.mapquest.com |

I remember someone telling me that if they actually crossed the Alps from Salzburg they would end up in Berchtesgaden (Hitler's Eagles Nest), which I think is really quite funny.

Everything about the Sound of Music is inaccurate, pretty much. Rodgers and Hammerstein do tend to mangle their sources-Andrew Lloyd Webber has nothing on these guys.

The real Von Trapps escaped by pretending to go on a vacation to Italy, so they packed travel luggage, leaving most of their things behind, and got on a train out of Austria. Then they fled to a boat for America. I believe the Captain was about to be forced to become a commander in the Navy of the Third Reich, like in the play.

There is a really interesting article comparing the movie version to what really happened to the family. They apparently left by train but not to Switzerland but to Italy. From Italy they went to America were they settled in Vermont. Check out this website for more information on the real family and how who they actually were:

Yeah! So TRUE! There's a plethora of things I could say about the actual Maria Rainer/Von Trapp that would probably surprise you! I've done a TON of research! LOL! |
