It's Boq.

And it's called a double. Pretty obvious, I think.
Baker

Yeah, it's not difficult. He's in the wheelchair and Elphaba rolls him to a position so he's facing away from the audience. There's a curtain onstage at that point, so Boq slips off behind the curtain and the Tin Man slips into the chair.
jimbothecrab

I don't remember. I saw the musical last year and remember the scene just dont remember how it happened. I'm seeing it in April though so my memory will be refreshed.
wls250

Yep, its a double, so theres someone that looks similar as the tin man, that mimes the words, and the actor playing boq behind the curtain or wardrobe or whever it may be, even on recording says the part/lines
theatre_grl

its obvious? Embarassed i would have had no idea if you asked me.
maybe i just never think about these things. usually i just try to enjoy the show w/o thinking of the technical stuff (though i probably will go mad thinking about the trick at the end of poto...)

It's not all that obvious when you don't know the trick. Afterwards, it is pretty easy to tell.

Speaking of changing on stage, do they do the same thing for Into the Woods with the Witch?

That's been discussed backwards and forwards in the ITW forum... there's usually a double for the ugly Witch throughout the scene where Milky White is revived and milks, then she runs back into the fog and Bernadette comes out. For the movie though, they taped the Milky White scene with Bernadette without an audience there and added it in separately, so it would look like it's Bernadette the whole time.

Really? Then who orginally played the ugly Witch in the show?
Luc

^^ That makes me so sad!! I thought it was just amaaaazing makeup changes. Crying or Very sad
Baker

I don't know if she was ever credited, but a lot of people believe it was the girl who played Snow White.

They do the same thing for the Beast's transformation, too. It's a Beast double who fights Gaston.
Pounce

What about Boq's/Tin Man's later appearance in the show? I think it's during "March of the Witch Hunters". Do they still use a double or does the actor go through makeup?
Luc

I believe he goes through makeup and continues to play his role for the rest of the show. They probably just use an ensemble member for the double. Smile
SapphireNight

Nope, thats the Boq actor. Its clever, because that first scene, after the transformation, you dont see the Tin Man very clearly- hes moving, and hes normally got his side (even back) to the audience. During MOTWH, he's just in one place, at the front, near the audience, shouting out several lines.

How sad, we've been doing 1 person for both transformation quite easily and they use a double. Think

Do you have as intense make up as they do on Broadway?

How do they do that with the beast when he has to sing in the transformation? Is that his double singing too?

We pulled all of the face stuff on the Witch off before, she never showed her face to the audience, and during the transformation she pulled off her rubber fingers. We haven't decided on how to do the Beast's transformation yet, but we are clear on the fact of not using a double.

Ah, I thought you meant that you didn't use a double for the Beast transformation...

No, she said they were planning on doing the Beast with one person and that they were already doing the Witch with one person... she couldn't have meant the Beast because she said that they were already doing the transformation well.

A technicality of tenses. =P

We did ITW last year. As for Beast, we have no one else to play the double. So I'd assume lots of smoke and lights, Belle and Beast pulls off the beast parts and ta da!
ConverseSneaker

To be honest, I thought the latex(it is made of latex, right?) was attatched to the cape, and when she goes from ugly to pretty, she just slips herself out of it, flattens it agaist her hood, pulls it off dramatically and ta-da!
