The Show Must Go On!!! :-(Well, our community theatre is doing Pajama Game, but only a few men were dragged to...er, I mean auditioned for the show. The director is still in need of 5 more men and 4-5 more women! We already started rehearsals with a read-through of the show, and tonight we learn the songs. Have you run into this problem before, and if so--do you think it is still wise to try to continue with this show if there aren't enough people?
BTW--I got the role of Brenda. Not what I wanted, but at least it's a speaking part.
Thanks for listening!

I can't say that I have ever been in a show where rehearsals started before the show was completely cast.
If the director is holding open auditions tell your friends about it. Theater is much fun.

Companys I have worked with always need more guys. The company I am in now is short guys. Which is fun because it gives me a lot of work for the show. But it would be nice to have a few more. But as you said the show goes on.

Ive been in several shows where we started rehearsing before the full ensemble was cast. usually we principal will rehearse the music and get our blocking.

I do musicals at a local all boy's school, and even then we have more girls!
I'd say wait it out for a bit to see if more people are cast. However, if nothing seems to be happening and you feel like you are wasting your time, I think it is reasonable enough to devote your efforts elsewhere. Yet maybe a female will get fed up and quit, leaving you a larger role!
I'm just musing.

I guess the lack of men is a pretty common occurrence in community theatre. I've tried to recruit male friends and even my own father (to play Pop), but to no avail.
The Pajama Game is also a show that probably doesn't appeal to lots of men because of the extensive dance numbers. The next town over is holding auditions for The Odd Couple next month, so I'm sure that may be another factor.
It's too bad because the score is great for this show, and I think it will be a lot of fun to be in it. We practiced some of the songs last night, but with only 2 men there, it just didn't sound right.
We start dance rehearsals next week, and I can't wait. Not only do I love to dance, but I could use the exercise!
Being in community theatre has been such a great release for me, both socially and emotionally. I have made so many new friends and learned alot about myself.
I only wish I had pursued this interest when I was in high school. Ah well.. it's never too late I guess.
Thanks for listening...
p.s. The role I wanted was Gladys, but there's no chance the woman who got it will drop out--she's friends with the director!
